LO has started fussing at the boob and messing about before latching. Like she isn't sure of her position. A couple of times she has like lightly grabbed my nipple and started shaking her head. Idk exactly how to describe it. Does that sound normal? I'm actually glad she goes to the ped tomorrow. When they told me how soon after discharge in the hospital I thought it was stupid, but now I am so glad and the hospital seems like forever ago ( even though it was 2 days). I am obsessively counting pees and poops.
Mom:( scooping up one angry lump of baby): hey there, sweetie. Hungry?
Baby: OH, MOM, it was SO AWFUl! I woke up in that PLACE? You know the one? Where no one is holding the baby? And there isn't any milk? IT WAS THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED IN MY WHOLE LIFE!
Mom (offers Brest): here you go.
Baby: SO HUNGRY! (Butts breast with her face)
Mom: you have to open your mouth
Baby: WILL NO ONE THINK OF THE BABE?
Mom ( tickles her lip): it's ok sweetie
Baby: SO HUNGRY-oh. Snarf. Non nom nom nom nom nom. MAN, that's the stuff! Nom nom nom nom nom nom. SO GOOD! Nom nom nom nom. I Almost DIED, you know. Nom nom nom nom nom.
Mom: Zzzzzzzzz
Baby ( head lolling back, mouth slack and dribbling milk ): Duuuuuude.
So I picked up a nipple shield. Anyone else find them incredibly messy or do I need a different size?
It also still pinches. Pretty sure it's me and my nipples hate being touched.
My LC gave me one yesterday. I hate it. DD keeps knocking it off before she can latch and it's a huge drippy, sticky mess. And it still pinched. I tried it like 3 times and gave up. I'm trying harder to work on a better latch instead.

I found it a little messy, more a logistical pain than anything else. If it hurts/pinches though, I'd say s different size would be better. I had 2, and I definitely liked one better... I can't remember why though.

The head shaking is rooting, and it's totally normal. DS2 does it, too. They're just trying to make sure they've actually found the breast.

Those of you using nipple shields- have your LCs recommended them? I've always been under the impression that you don't want to use a nipple shield unless absolutely necessary. I think the reason I got before was that they create a dependency that you just don't want to have to deal with later on. I've never used one before and I had extreme pain and latch issues with the boys.

My LC recommended I use one just for a few days to give my cracked nipples a chance to heal. She actually said to try not to use it on my less damaged side if I could. I've heard the same thing, which is why I'm hesitant to use it, especially since it is such a pain to use.

My LC consultant told me to get one when I saw her yesterday. We've kinda hit a wall as to why breastfeeding hurts me. She latched K for me and it still pinched so she suggested the shield until her mouth develops further. It still pinches though and is super messy so im going to wait until next time I see her to use it again.
I use a nipple shield for my left boob as baby will not latch unless it's there. My LC thinks it's because my letdown is so strong on that side. To that I add, it's a horrible mess and he is already a messy eater. I feel like we both need baths after he is done.
Our doula showed me a new hold today, and it is awesome. LO sits straddling your one leg facing the boob and nurses upright. Be warned milk comes out much faster this way. Caused some extra burping but it was so efficient and easy to get her to latch! I just did some googling and it's called the saddle hold. A lot of the pics show it with a baby that can hold their head up already, but I just supported her head with my non boob squeezing hand.

Sounds like I'm the only one that likes mine. I don't want him to become dependent on it to latch though so I'm trying to wean myself off it.
I also love the shield. The LC gave it to me, and as with flanges, I think size matters. It can get messy when LO pulls it off, but it saves my nipples, and also makes the nipple easy for her to get with her mouth. Breastfeeding is hard enough, trying to fight my nipple is a battle I'm not ready for. Plus, I love seeing the milk and knowing she's eating.
LO has finally started cluster feeding. He has been attached to me every hour ( which is a victory in and of itself.) Also, we are down to one or two bottles a day off pumped milk! Again, a HUGE victory!! I feel like my little preemie is finally catching up!!

YAY! This is amazing. So happy for you both that you feel happier and more on track with BF.
Also, my LO took a long nap and then just ate 6 times in 2 hours and is showing no signs of stopping. As awesome as cluster feeding is for her, I'm thinking, HOLY HELL, BABY.

We are also doing good better with breastfeeding as we get close to our original due date. Baby girl is better about eating from the boob, but still doesn't get full full, so she's back on really often. Still, no bottles all day.
