So Relieved (and a little nervous)

After almost four months of a not great situation, almost one month of which was spent advocating HARD DS is moving to a different school (litebright s school) on Monday.  It has been a difficult four months, 3 of which I fought tooth and nail to make the situation work, right up until the principal and classroom teacher told me they were suspending him because they didn't know what to do.  His current school just doesn't have the resources or training.  I hired an advocate, we met with the District last week (after they stalled and all but ignored requests coming from the school team).  Yesterday my advocate requested prior written notice regarding our request to move him.  Today I got confirmation that he has a spot in the half day Kindergarten class starting as early as Thursday.  I wish it was full day but that class is completely full.  After talking with the school psych and principal there (and LB) I am so optimistic that they will "get it".  I'm not a huge fan of transitions and DS is going to be upset about leaving a few friends behind (I have their parents contact information and will be using it)  but long term this will be so much better.

That's great.

I have had to change DS's educational placement because it no longer worked well for him twice in addition to the usual transitions from preschool to kindie, to elementary, to middle school, to high school, to a local community college and to a big university.

In every case, the transition to the school that was a better fit went much better than I ever dared hope. I hope that same for you. A team who gets it can support students in being the best possible version of themselves.

I know we talked about it last night, but I'll just say again that I think you'll be really encouraged by how this school handles kids with ASD. From services to just being a welcoming environment, because they get it and are invested in and supported to help kids on the spectrum succeed.

I hope it's the place he needs, and that they can help your little guy be his best self and get back on track so that he can enjoy school and learning!

Kiddo took the news much better than expected. There were a few tears but by the end of the conversation he was excited. Oh and LB the psych is amazing. She emailed me the transition book this afternoon and it's PERFECT.

I'm so glad the convo went well.

DS was upset the first time we had to move him. I actually got him a kitten as compensation.

I looked at DH and whispered now would be the time for him to ask for a pony. We got off easy. He asked to go to Chili's for dinner which DH and I kind of hate but he loves since they have tablets on the tables.

Everything this new school does just screams that they understand. I know everything isn't going to be perfect but I'm optimistic that things will be handled in a way that sets my child up for success instead of failure. :-)
