I had a fibroadenoma removed several years ago. I was given heavy sedation...not general anesthesia, but I was not aware of what was happening during the procedure, and I have no memory of it afterward. Maybe you could talk yo your doctor about something like that?
Also, for what it's worth, recovery was a piece of cake. Your mass is bigger than mine was, but I'm sure you'll do fine!

Thank you so much for that information! And I was worried about recovery time with work. How long did it take you to be able to work after the surgery? My problem is that the surgery is on my left side which is my dominant side. I just don't want to be down for too long
Recovery time was only one day for me, but my lump was a lot smaller. I was sore but it wasn't bad. I only took 1 pain killer and refused the rest bc didn't like the way it made me feel. I am a wuss with pain so couldn't have been that bad!
Thinking of you! I had one when I was 15 - the surgery to remove it was really easy for me/easy recovery. Hope all goes well. Good vibes your way and thinking positive thoughts that it will only be a fibroadenoma.

Yea I may opt out of the pain killers, only because they make me extremely sick to my stomach. When I had a car accident I was put on Vicodin and was sick off them. When I had mono, they put my on Percocet and I was sick off those lol. My body refuses pain killers

I had a fibroadenoma removed from my left breast in 2009. It was only about the size of a peach pit though. They had me sedated (asleep but not general anesthesia)for the procedure, but I remember waking up in the middle of it and there was a curtain pulled up so I couldn't see. My surgeons were talking and I asked them if they could show me the lump when they took it out and they said "sure" and then promptly put me back to sleep hahaha The procedure was really nothing to worry about. I had a few stitches afterward and still have a small white scar. Afterward though the healing was decently painful for a day or so. I was given a big ace bandage to bind my breasts and that helped. And also I'm a HUGE wimp so take what I consider "decently painful" with a grain of salt. I'm pretty sure I just took ibuprofen for the pain. The worst part was that while it healed, it itched like crazy and you can't exactly just be scratching your boob all day. I became an expert at rubbing my boob with the inside of my arm nonchalantly. Or so I hoped. And I got some sharp zapping pains in my scar for a while afterward, just periodically. But now 6 years later i never feel any after effects. I would definitely talk with your doctor or your surgeon if you are not comfortable being awake during it. And tell them you're afraid of seeing it. I think it's pretty standard procedure to block your view on almost all things like that but its definitely something you can let them know. Hope that helps.

If I remember correctly, I was out for a day or two. I think they prescribed Vicodin post op, but I didn't really need it. I did ask for some anxiety meds pre op, because I was so nervous, and they gave me something to help me relax, which was nice!

Thank you so much! That helps my fears a little more knowing it wasn't too bad. I can handle pain fairly well, so I'm hoping it will be easy for me to get through. I am so glad you are doing better!
ttcminicofer ... I'm super late to the party, but I'm a sonographer, and I actually specialized in breast imaging for quite some time. I would say that it's great that they are planning to remove it since it is growing so rapidly (not because of concern for cancer, but because the more it grows, the more tissue they remove). There is a possibility (depending on your doctor and the facility) that they may do a needle localization, which means that on the day of your surgery, they will numb the breast tissue and use ultrasound to insert a small needle directly into the lump that is to be removed. It assists the doctors in removing the correct lump (especially being that you have fibrocystic breasts), and it also helps once the lump is removed because they can x-ray the specimen and make sure they removed all margins of the mass.
We would see patients before and after these procedures all the time, and it's generally pretty uncomplicated. I know a month is a long time to wait (and think and stress), but it sounds like you are in good hands and will be well taken care of. Please don't hesitate to message me if you have any questions about anything, and I'll do my best to talk you through it based on what I've seen. Good luck!
ETA: Caffeine can worsen fibrocystic breasts, but will not change a fibroadenoma. Hormones definitely can, though. My radiologist always recommended that fibroadenomas that showed growth be removed before pregnancy for that reason.

ttcminicofer is it a needle biopsy? I had to have a need biopsy two years ago as they found a growth. I was really scared. Breast cancer runs in my family. I had my dh come with me to give me support, he stayed in the waiting room. I wish you the best.

I'm not sure yet. The radiologist is waiting for the surgeon to look over the ultrasound pictures and decide what he wants to do. I am hoping for the needle biopsy. I have a friend who had cancer in her left breast and for her biopsy, they used a drill on her breast.
