Fibroadenoma in breast **update in OP**

Today was a scary day. I went to my doctor after finding a very sizable lump in my breast. It went from small to the size of my palm in a few months and was extremely painful. When the doctor examined me she said she believes it is a fibroadenoma.
I'm going next week for an ultrasound to be sure that there are no signs of cancerous cells. The lump is so big they have decided to surgically remove it. I will be going in next month to have it removed. Once removed they plan to look at it and test to be sure there is no sign of cancer.
I'm scared shitless of course. She mentioned they may just numb me and have me awake for the surgery, but the thought of me being awake, even numbed, is terrifying to me. I really hope I misunderstood her there. Has anyone had this procedure done? If so, we're you awake during it?

UPDATE: today I had an ultrasound done to verify what I had are fibroadenomas. I expected to walk in, have the ultrasound, verify it was fibroadenoma and be told, "see you on your surgery day!" However, I didn't get that.
After spending a good amount of time in one part of my breast (not on the lump itself, but off the side of it) the ultrasound tech left and had the radiologist come in to speak with me. He stated that he has some concerns with the ultrasound, but of course he couldn't tell me exactly what it was they found, but he has decided he wants me to have a biopsy done next week. He said he was also concerned with how fast the tumor has grown and why it is causing bruising and so much pain. The tumor was around 5cm. That growth was in a matter of three months. So I basically walked out having more questions and concerns than I did going in. They plan to send my ultrasound pictures to the surgeon and see what he wants to do next. Thank you ladies for all the thoughts. I know I have been absent, I'm just in a very tough spot. We are currently TTA until we know more about what is happening.

I'm so sorry hun. I am happy they don't think it is cancer and keeping everything crossed for you. Big hugs.

The closest surgical experience I can think of is I was awake for my c-section. I know it is a completely different situation and very different numbing technique. But the sensation may be similar. I could feel a lot of tugging and pressure but no pain and they will probably have a screen up so you can't see anything hun.

Thank you! Did yours stop growing? Do they think they will need to remove it in the future? Mine started off the size of a pea and in only a few months is now the size of my palm and has actually started bruising the skin where it is and is pretty painful.

Thank you! I think my main concern with being awake, is seeing anything. I wouldn't do well with that. I assume they wouldn't have it out in the open for me to see. Everything I read up on says they put you under anesthesia so I really am hoping I misunderstood her

I don't know why exactly, but everything cam back normal. I have no advice on the surgery, just wanted to wish you good luck.xx

Thank you! That's interesting they checked your thyroid. I have hypothyroidism. She said there's really no explanation why they occur, but I have always had fibrocystic breasts, this one just had its own agenda apparently.

Right now I'm alternating between ultra sounds and mammograms every three months. It's been mostly stable but grew very slightly this last time.

My doctor says it's not unreasonable to want it removed and that she'd refer me to a surgeon if I wanted but for now she's confortable with the monitoring as long as it doesn't exceed a certain size (which I can't remember right now) She also told me sometimes they go away on their own as you get older.

Right not we're just playing it by ear but I've never had any excelerated growth or bruising.

Yea that's what I don't understand with mine, why it grew so big so fast. But having it removed is better for me just to be able to relieve the pain and bruising. If yours isn't painful I don't see the point of removing it unless it does start growing.

Yea, I can imagine you'll feel much better. Even my smaller one can be really painful at times but not consistently enough for me to feel ready for my first surgery.

I really have no idea how long it took to get to this size. If it had been the size of a pea I honestly don't think I could have found it. I have really dense fibrous breast, even my doctor had difficulty finding it at first.

Mine was easy to find for me. And I knew my breasts had a lot of cysts, so I never worried too much. I ignored it until it became really painful and I started noticing the size of it.
This will be my first surgery and I am not at all ready to go through with it. My nerves are kicking in and I still have a month before surgery.

I also have fibrocystic breast, apparently the adenomas are common in them. Seeing as all my hormone results were within normal parameters, I don't think it had an influence. Just one of those things that happen I guess!

So sorry you had a scary day. My only experience is my mom had a lumpectomy, and she was put under anesthesia for it. Maybe you could request this to your doctor, if being awake really bothers you. Hugs to you, thoughts and prayers that it's not serious!

I'm also on an ultrasound/mammogram watch and see routine for the same thing.

I had the same problem a few years back and my doctor had me give up caffeine and I didn't have the problem again until recently when I reincorporated caffeine into my diet. It may be a coincidence, but I'm thinking the caffeine is going to be dropped again because it's just to scary to deal with.

A coworker of mine just went through this 3 weeks ago. She was awake for the surgery and said it was weird but she couldn't see or feel anything. She chilled out to Bob Marley as they worked. She said she had to get her boob packed because they took out a large lump also but other than being sore and swollen for a week she had no problems.

I had a soft tissue mass in my abdomen that my doctor removed. it wasn't as large as what you're describing, but I was awake for the procedure and it was not bad at all. My doctor did offer to put me under for the procedure but I declined. You should definitely let your doctor know you'd be more comfortable if you weren't awake for the procedure. Good luck!
