We are not expecting but my husband is reading a biography and the wife in the biography's name is Idelette. I'm a huge sucker for old names (like Caroline, for example) and really like the sound of this name. This woman lived in the 1500s. BTN doesn't recognize it, though, and that makes me sad.

A Google search shows it was the first name of the wife of John Calvin (of the Calvinists).
I'm hesitant to use Behind the Name as the end-all-be-all of name authorities, especially for older non-English names. My family is full of old French names (from colonial Louisiana) that are not listed on Behind the Name, but I know are legitimate names.
I'd say Idelette is a "real" name and if you like it, use it. I think it's lovely for someone else's child. And she'd more than likely be the only one in her classes at school.
It sounds like it's old enough to get a pass, but it makes me think of "eyelid" and I don't like it. Better -ette names: Bernadette Claudette Florette Juliette Lisette Lucette Mariette Nicolette Odette Violette Yvette

Yes, he was reading about John Calvin! Thanks for mentioning that about Behind the Name. I naturally just look there, but it's good to know it doesn't list some other legitimate names.
