Well my OB was wrong. I have thrush. I'm so worked up. Now I have to apply this cream to my nipples, apply this liquid to all of Olivia's mouth, and use special diaper tag cream on her. I feel like a terrible mom. I just want to cry. I'm so overwhelmed right now. Sorry just need some love from you awesome ladies.<br/>
Hey, you. Try to be kind to yourself. I have thrush too. I have to apply Nystatin to my nipples and give it to my baby 4x a day and use Lotrimin AF on his bum. We had to take a hiatus from cloth diapering. But the good news is that it's only been a few days and we're already feeling better! I'm looking forward to soon being able to feed my son pain-free for the first time ever. It does get better. Hang in there, mama!
emmyg65 you are so amazing and positive! Thank you *hugs* I'm glad you are feeling better. I hope we start feeling better soon too! Pain free sounds amazing! Do you wash off your nystatin before you feed? My Dr said no. I was just curious...
So my midwife did something a little different and prescribed the oral solution to me instead of the cream. I put a drop or two on each nipple every four hours. Since it's the same stuff I give my son, there's no need to wash off. The only problem is that it's STICKY. But disposable breast pads help that.
It's ok. Thrush is pretty common and it's likely that it started with baby instead of with mom--as baby has a low immune system so a common yeast spore can get out of control. then it passes to you and you both have it.
Be sure to sterilize everything that touches your breast, your milk, baby's mouth or bum. or at least put it thru a vinegar rinse and dry in hot dryer if you can't sterilize. yeast spores live on lots of surfaces normally, but you have out of control number of them right now, so lowering the count of them in your life would be good. a good probiotic can help for sure.
I'm so sorry you are going through this! Hugs to you mama. Hang in there. As if general newborn care and establishment of breastfeeding wasn't challenging enough... oye, I feel for you! Hope you feel better soon!
Thank you ladies. After my DH came home I'm feeling better. It's just so overwhelming taking care of a new born alone and now with the meds... just oy. He comes home and helps me and everything just seems like it's going to be ok. The 4 hours of sleep helped too!
Glad DH was helping out when he got home. I'm sorry you're dealing with thrush...taking care of a newborn is hard enough as it is!! You are not a bad mom, thrush is so common. Hang in there and I hope you two are feeling better soon!!
@amyg Olivia has been putting her hands in her mouth. Being that we have thrush how do I clean her hands so the infection doesn't get under her nails? I could be over reacting....
Just wash her hands like you normally would. Yeast spores naturally live on our skin and the beneficial bacteria can usually keep it in check. With antibiotics of low immune system plus sweet breastmilk feeding the yeast that's when it gets out of control. But some on fingers is ok cause there is some already there. Hey maybe she'll eat enough beneficial bacteria off her fingers to balance out the yeast in her mouth lol that's a joke
