Glucose Test Question - Now 2.5 Hours!

I just got back from my midwife appointment and got a slip for the lab for my glucose test. Apparently the standard 1 hour one is now 2.5 hours?! Midwife said it was the new thing. You basically have to do a 2 hour test with 10 hours of fasting before. And I thought the 1 hour was bad. Anyone else have to do this?

I have never heard of this, only the one hour (which I did today) and 3 hour if you fail the 1 hour.

Also 10 hours of fasting? That seems like a long time. Mine has you eat a light breakfast the day of the test so that seems extreme to me.

I could never do 10 hrs of fasting! I have to do one hour of fasting then drink the drink then wait an hour before getting my blood drawn.

Nope, never heard of this. I have my drink already. 45 min before my next appt I drink it, get my blood taken an hour after I drink it

Nope. One hour or three hour here. I don't even fast before the one Hour so there's that.

I can only guess California is just being wacky or this is how the norm is going to be eventually and it hit CA first. I'm just annoyed because now I have to go on the weekend when the lab will probably be more crowded so H can watch DS because there is no way my son is going to sit there happily for 2.5 hours. If I fail, do I then take an 8 hour test? I better pass this sucker!

I have heard of it but my OB didn't do it that way. I have a new practice for this pregnancy so we'll see what they do. I'll get my instructions next appt.

1 hour and 3 hour here. Both with fasting 8-12 hours.

My ob only orders the 3 hour if there's a hx of GD or if you fail the 1 hour. Oh, and no fasting.

I'm in CA and my OB hasn't even brought up the glucose test yet. I'm seeing her Friday and will ask...why does Cali have to try stuff first!

I think you live in Southern California if I remember right (I grew up down there). I live in Northern California now.

I start with the 1 hour here with 8 hours of fasting. Only have to do the 3 hour if I fail.

It's really interesting how different OBs do the glucose test. I know the fail number can vary depending on your practice so someone diagnosed with GD could have actually passed with a different doctor. And I looked at my lab orders - the 1 hr and 3 hr still exist. The 2 hr is new - hopefully all of you avoid it!

There is literally no way I could fast for 10 hours, then wait yet another 2.5 hours between the drink and the test. Assuming the fasting is overnight, even then, no way. I get really, really shaky and feel faint if I got for more than a couple hours without eating. That sounds like a horrible torture to me. They woudl need someone at the lab to pick my ass up when I pass out on their floor.

10 hours is a long time for a pregnant woman to go without food!

My OB does the 1 hour with no fasting requirement. They did tell me to not eat very many carbs before the test and to stick to mostly protein.

I think if I would have failed the 1 hour one, I would have had to do the 2 hour one next. I scheduled mine for first thing in the morning so that most of my fasting would happen while I was sleeping! I made sure to bring some trail mix though, to snack on immediately after because I was both voracious and nauseated at the same time. Brings back great memories of 1st tri.

rungirlrun, I just realized that you said midwife. I know that places with midwives do shit all different sorts of ways so maybe that's why? I just asked MH about the 2 1/2 hour and he gave me the most WTF look, so it's nothing he's heard of yet in the practice. AFM. I couldn't fast that long if my life depended on it.

This is exactly how it is here.  I would be beyond famished if I had to fast 10 hours, that sucks!

I gave birth to my son with a midwife, and it was standard 1 or 3 hour test.  So I don't really know what this new thing is, but I'll deal.  I'll just get the first appointment of the day to help with the fasting and look at the whole experience as a break from DS!

rungirlrun, do you have Kaiser? I just got my paperwork last week, and when I had DD in 2011...it was 1 hour (and then the 3 hour if you failed the 1 hour). When I got my paperwork this time, there was a 1 hour, 2 hour, or 3 hour. My OB said that the 2 hour was the new thing, but that I could do the 1 hour if I wanted, or the 2 hour....either way, if I failed, I would have to do the 3 hour. I just said that I would do the 2 hour, and then when I go in, I am going to ask if I can leave during the wait times. I remember sitting in the lobby during the 1 hour, and it was so boring because we cannot get cell phone reception in the lobby, and there are only so many magazines you can read. I usually do my appointment in the morning, just so I don't notice how starving I am yet, because I am still waking up. HAHA

harlowjune1984, no I don't have Kaiser (I have Blue Cross). Glad someone else has heard of the 2 hour test though! Why did you opt for the 2 hour?Are you less likely to fail than the 1 hour? That's so rough about not getting internet during the test - I would be bored to tears. I know I'm not allowed to leave at all. Apparently, people use to be able to leave but ended up fainting or just having some medical issues due to the drink so you have to stay.

Last GTT I did was a total of 3 hours but they took blood at the beginning, after an hour, and at the 3 hour mark. I took a nap while waiting. I wasn't even pregnant.

rungirlrun, I have no idea why I said I would do the two hour. But when I go in, I am going to ask if I can switch to the one hour, and hopefully the lab lets me switch to the one hour.

I have a midwife and am doing the one hour test on Tuesday, no fasting, she just told me not to have something sugary for breakfast.

I just got my instructions for a 2 hour test. My doctor says he switched over from the 1 hour because "it's more accurate." I have to fast too. I'm calling tomorrow to try and get the first appointment of the morning in two weeks.
