I absolutely cannot sleep on my side without waking up later with extreme hip pain. If I pursue the side sleeping I find my SPD is dramatically worse.
I've realized sleeping on my back is actually the most comfortable for my hips/back. I've read back sleeping isn't great for pregnancy... But I'm at a loss.
Does anyone have a magical comfortable solution for sleeping? Has anyone's doctors mentioned back sleeping?

I asked my ob about it and she said to sleep with a pillow under my stomach and one between my legs to help relieve pressure. I said I've been waking up on my back a lot and she said that's probably why has causing me to wake up. Nothing to worry about but good to try to not sleep on your back.
I did some googling about this because I'm more comfortable propped up on my back than on my side because of hip pain. From what I can tell, if you are fairly propped up - pillows behind you and one under your knees - it is safe. I'd definitely ask your OB before taking my word for it, though. I haven't asked my doctor so I've been just trying to roll over every time I wake up so I don't put all the pressure on one hip.
I've recently been having a sleep issue too. It hurts my hips to lay on my sides and I wake up with my hands and arms really numb. But, if I accidentally roll onto my back, it's a lot more comfortable, but my hands still go numb. I have no solution except to keep laying on my side with pillows between my legs and under my belly. I would talk to your OB or nurse to see if they have any suggestions. I'm just counting down the weeks until I can belly sleep again!
I put a pillow under my side so the majority of my body weight isn't necessarily on my hips. It's like I'm almost sleeping on my stomach but not. I just rotate from side to side all night in this position.
I do what Kevinmac, does. I sleep with a body pillow in between my legs and up my body, so it's sort of like I'm sleeping on my stomach, but not, and all of the weigh isn't on my hips. I borrowed a snoogle from SIL but haven't used it yet because this has worked so far (although I've still struggled with insomnia, this more has to do with not being able to shut my brain off).
I use the snoogle and pull it all the way up through my legs so that it's under my belly. It sort of allows me to rotate my upper body without being on my back because the other side is behind me. It's been making me too hot though so I ditch it in the middle of the night and just put a pillow under my belly and one between my legs.

My OB said that sleeping on your back is fine. I find that I wake up and switch positions multiple times through the night, but I know I sleep a significant chunk of time on my back.
I've been falling asleep on my side hugging a body pillow that's between my knees. That helps with the OMG my pelvis was crushed overnight feeling. My sleep hasn't been super great, but I do notice that I've been waking up on my back with one leg still bent under the body pillow. I haven't noticed any ill effects or numbness, so I'm just gonna go with it.

Yep, same as others. I rotate from side to side but often find myself on my back. Well, sort of a half-back, half-hip combo, with a pillow that tilts me to one side.
From what I remember, back sleeping is only a problem when your body tells you it is. You will start going numb and what not.
So sorry about the hip pain. I can't wait to sleep on my stomach again, though I know it'll be awhile with the huge/leaking boobs part coming.

This is what I do too. I've wondered about that inner tube idea--I can't wait to be able to sleep on my side stomach again...and drink wine, in a scalding hot tub, with cold sliced turkey and runny eggs...
ETA stomach--never again on my side, or at least not until I'm pregnant again...
I prop myself up with two regular pillows, then the snoogle to help with reflux/snoring. I try to sleep on my side, but If I end up on my back then I'm propped up enough and the snoogle doesn't let me get all the way flat.

I think I'm a pretty restless sleeper. I've always been a side sleeper so that's how I fall asleep. If I roll onto my back it'll usually wake me up so I'll roll back to my side. I haven't started using any extra pillows yet. I'm the type of person who sleeps with 1 flat pillow though.

I basically just switch from side to side all night once one side is uncomfortable. I have pillows on both sides for extra support but hip pain is still a thing.

I have found that a recliner on my side (kind of) is most comfortable when I can't get comfortable in bed with my body pillow. Then if I need to be on my back I'm reclined at an angle and not flat. Laying flat on your back can cause baby to put a lot of pressure on something but I can't remember what.

I will share with you all a lesson I learned last night: If you have a preferred side that you like to sleep on, when you get your Tdap shot request that it be in the OPPOSITE arm! (As a right-handed individual I didn't think twice about getting the shot in my left arm yesterday, but boy did I pay the price when I went to lay down in my usual left-sided position when I went to bed last night!)
I also use a pillow in between my legs and under my stomach a little to take some weight off. This has helped my hips a lot. I also to the chiropractor every other week. It's been a life savor!
