Maybe this is cultural- but everyone telling me its ok for my in laws to be disrespectful and disregard my rules for my kids because "thats what grandparents do"

My parents and IL's are ok this go-round. My mom and I had a fight about 3 years ago because she would just trample over what my husband and I would tell my stepdaughter to do. I get that grandparents can bend some rules (later bed time, etc) but when I directly tell her something, don't tell her to ignore me. I have felt your pain.
How is that "cultural"!?! Like others have said, parents make decisions regarding their children, not the grandparents.
And the kids would be getting mixed signals-they are going to hear/see mom and dad tell grandma/grandpa what to do and they ignore instructions...way to set a great example of how to follow the rules!!

I think it's stereotypical, not cultural. Either way it's wrong.
One thing that makes me wonder is... many of us will one day be in-laws and grand parents... I wonder if we'll understand their actions more when we get there? There's got to be a reason the bsc behavior of in-laws are so common...

note to self... don't be a bsc in-law...
I think its generational tbh. I think maybe we are the firsts to tell our parents to shove it when it comes to kids.
