Not to spiral, but I'm curious what everyone's doctors are saying regarding the virus. I am sure this will vary greatly based on geographic location.
I live in the DC Metro area and we do have the type of mosquito in the region. She said I will need to wear deet once the mosquitoes come out regardless of if there are any reported local outbreaks since there will be a lag between it starting and it getting into the news.
We also went to Cancun in Jan, so we also are a slightly higher risk. CDC says to wait to ttc for 8 weeks after traveling (we see this now..) and I got preg at 6-7 weeks. She said that technically we should use condoms the entire pregnancy, but I'm skeptical on that bc I figure if mh got it, then it would have been in sperm that got me pregnant, so we'd already be in trouble. She acknowledged that we are probably good, but that it sucks they don't test men. However, if he were to travel somewhere now, then I'd totally do that.
Sorry to be a downer, but it's a scary new thing to worry about while pregnant.
tallblonde I am not all that worried about Zika even though I probably should be. We were in Mexico in February and I conceived either on the last day we were there (if you go by how baby was measuring at my first U/S) or within a couple of days after we got back (if you go by when FF says I ovulated). So I'm at risk as well, even though we were in Oaxaca Centro where at the time there had been no reported cases, and neither of us got bitten by anything. In any event, I'm planning to bring it up with my OB at my appointment today to see if maybe they want to do some sort of blood test.
In terms of the risk at home, I'm in Massachusetts and it's still dropping into the 30's at night here, so the mosquitoes won't be out for a bit longer, and by the time they are I will be out of first trimester (which I understand is when the risk to the fetus is the greatest).
I do agree with you that this is just one more thing to worry about while pregnant! I feel awful for women who live in Brazil and the other countries where this thing is popping up everywhere; I can't imagine how scary it must be.

My midwife never even mentioned it but we also have traveled since the outbreak. There have only been 2 cases found in Michigan and both were people who traveled and got it. That specific mosquito isn't found here either. I'll be careful about getting bit when we get to that point but I'm not too worried.

I'm also in the DC metro area, and nothing was said about it at my appointment except to ask if we were planning to travel to any of the affected areas. Now I'm wondering if I should get some bug spray because we tend to get mosquitoes in our backyard, and I always seem to get bitten a lot.

I live in the south and we have the type of mosquitos here. I went around my yard and made sure to dump all standing water (that's where they breed). I even flipped my bird bath... Sorry birds! Usually when my H grills I would stay outside with him but I haven't been lately because I normally always get bit by something. I asked my OB and her only response was don't go to Mexico. And I said what about here? And she didn't seem concerned. She said to wear bug spray and deet is ok for pregnancy.

Btw I thought the only way a man was able to transmit the virus was because their was blood in his semen. Which obviously is a fluke thing. Wearing a condom for your entire pregnancy seems very extreme to me.
I'm in CT and my OB gave us a handout (part of our welcome kit) with CDC info and with the practices viewpoint. Our practice recommends not traveling to places that the CDC identifies as having an outbreak.
That said, I do think the affected mosquitos could make their way to any part of the US this summer (just based on my own thought process) but I'm not gonna drive myself nuts. I'll just do what I can to avoid it, not hang around outside at dusk, stay out of forested areas, use bug spray, etc.
We have a trip to DC planned and are considering as far as Charleston for the babymoon but unless the CDC or my OB tells us otherwise we'll still go.
I'm in FL--mosquito central--and our backyard backs up to woods/wetlands. Yay. I'm just planning to be smart about bug spray, avoid peak times (they seem worst in the evenings?) and keep the yard free of any standing water. We do not have any travel plans to affected areas but I'm sure we'll see cases in FL this summer beyond what has already been documented (all travel-related so far).
Our county will come out and inspect your property for mosquito breeding, etc. and will spray the yard, so we'll probably have them do that this summer.
I usually don't get bitten too much as it is, maybe once or twice a summer? Guess I am not appealing, haha. But better to be safe than sorry in this case.
It sounds like my doc is pretty conservative, or maybe it's me asking questions. She did grill me about our trip at the first visit. She said they will only test you if you were pregnant while traveling and if you were you get sonogram monthly to monitor growth.
Based on this article it's still unconfirmed if blood must be in semen, but that sounds rare and there are multiple documented cased transmitted that way.

My dc area OBs haven't said anything. I hate mosquitoes and tend to be attacked before anyone else around me so I wear deet a lot and will probably this summer as well just because.
We do have the mosquito however I think the likelihood of patient zero being in the DC area is slim so use caution but I wouldn't go crazy yet. I am guessing this will show up this summer in the south first somewhere between Florida and Texas and will spread from there. Now we get a lot of visitors from all over which does put us at higher risk of it jumping to DC but our weather is why I think it will start somewhere else and be slower to get here.
It sounds like your doctor is being especially cautious, which I can appreciate, but don't let it rule you.
I'm in Dallas. My doctor hasn't mentioned it yet but I have read it will likely reach the Gulf Coast first. I'll be watching for news about it and we likely won't be going for our yearly beach trip to Galveston. I'll probably just stay inside for much of the summer.. I don't like Texas summer heat anyway.

We were planning a trip to St. John (USVI) the first week of June to celebrate DH's graduation froom grad school and we were urged to cancel. I am so bummed!!! We are now looking at other possible locations. It looks like Bermuda is still in the clear BUT so expensive. We might just to a shorter trip to one of the cities on our bucket list...maybe DC or Chicago? But that doens't seem as relaxing as the beach. Thanks to this thread I have now abandonded all work and I am spiraling out on tripadvisor!

Going to see my ob Friday. We are in central Texas and mosquitoes are already out here. She hasn't mentioned it at all my last 2 appointments. We'll ask if she doesn't say anything. DH is super worried. I'm worried, but I can only do so much. Mosquitoes loooove me and even with spray I get bitten. I am allergic to deet but I may deal with the hives since other stuff doesn't seem to work for me.
aggiebug most of the people I know love it. I dread summer. And I love snow. I lived in Pittsburgh for 2 years and was sad to come back to TX.
Ha I can't think of any of my friends that love the Texas heat. (I grew up there) It was tolerated like a Canadian winter is tolerated to get to the rest of the year. I love Texas but I do not miss July or August (and some of June and September).
aggiebug then I think I'd fit in better with those people! All my fb friends start whining as soon as the temperature drops below 90. Why?? I guess they enjoy feeling as if their skin is melting off. I love cold and rain and would prefer snow over 100+ degrees any day.

When the soles of your shoes start sticking to the pavement it's too damn hot
We live in DC area now and love the weather. 4 seasons (they really do exist), tolerable summer heat, snow in the winter but not crazy. Moving back to Texas would be difficult to adjust to again.

I love DC! I went 4 years ago (drove from Pittsburgh) for 4th of July and it was nice. We intend to move out of TX, hopefully to PA in the next couple of years. I feel like TX is 6 months of summer and 6 months of tolerable weather aside from the tornadoes. We were supposed to move into a new apartment in January but it was completely destroyed by an EF5 tornado the day after Christmas. Our original move in date had been 12/5 so I was retrospectively thankful that it didn't work out then.
Is the aggie thing A&M? I went to Baylor for a year. Not a fan of Waco.

Yeah I am not a fan of tornadoes. I spent most of my time in Houston (the summer is 10x worse with that humidity) and the hill country and I was a OK to miss the tornadoes give me flooding any day over a tornado. And yep I went to A&M . Lol at not liking Wacko, my sister went there for 2 years and was happy to leave it's a strange place.
aggiebug same. Tornados suck. Floods too but tornados are the worst. Houston humidity is so awful though. Like swimming through the air really. Waco is certainly bizarre and not in a good way IMO.
jubilantsquirrel lol. My sister moved to Seattle 2 years ago and complains about the rain. I would loooove to live there but the cost of living is insane.

Tell me about it. I would love to buy a bigger house but we would be looking at almost doubling our mortgage just to add another bedroom. We got so lucky with this house, it was a short sale and we bought it in 2012.
jubilantsquirrel crazy! I have friends in Mukilteo with a house the size of my parents' house. Theirs was $150k and the one in Mukilteo was over $1mil. My sister's apartment is a studio and is around $1200/month where as the 2 bedroom we moved out of in December was less than $800.

I'm worried. I'm blood type O+ and supposedly we are seriously attractive to mosquitos. Needless to say, if you saw my evening routine last year (before Zika hit the news and being pregnant) including going around my bedroom 3-4x's checking for any bug with a flashlight, all my lotion gets a lemongrass and citronella make-over. To be fair, I react poorly to mosquito bites! I will scar even if I didn't scratch them, DH (an eagle scout) often looks at them and thinks its a different kind of bug bite. I will say, I didn't get any mosquito bites even though I live with a wetland area in my backyard. DH usually puts up 2-3 UV bug zappers outside. I also have a UV light with a sticky pad in our downstairs hallway to attract any bugs that might get inside.
Also, I live in NH... LOL We have no plans to travel much right now but I'm worried mostly because I'm crazy when it comes to bugs. Bugs will be the start the zombie apocalypse!
I am choosing not to worry about it. Even if you lived in Brazil, you have a higher chance of being killed in a car accident while pregnant than your baby developing microencephaly from Zika, based on current numbers.
I will wear bug spray and long pants and sleeves whenever possible when outdoors, and not go planning any trips to where the virus is active. Otherwise, I am not going to waste my worries on it at all.
