J (he just turned 1 on Jan.27) has been vomiting today. I talked to the pedi and they said to cut back on solids, clear liquids, and just watch him.
I'm not sure what to do with nursing. I'd like to continue to but not if it upsets his stomach. He's already thrown up twice after nursing today. And I don't want to lose my supply if he's not nursing.
I don't have a pump so that's not an option to at least keep my supply up.
Stomach bugs are the worst. DS had one just before he turned one (jan 20th). It was coming out both ends, bad. He was so upset and out of sorts that he bit me BAD, drew blood and all. I guess he got more than I thought because he puked up pink milk five minutes later. Totally freaked DH out, but DS immediately asked to nurse. I could tell he was just comfort nursing and not getting much. He vomited a lot, but just one day. After that it was about five days of bad diarrhea. Yuck .
I wouldn't cut back on sessions, and if he's wanting to nurse let him. Eventually he will keep it down and he needs the nourishment to stay hydrated. Offer water between sessions if he can keep that down too.

Our pedi says bm is natures pedialyte. Keep nursing as usual. He will likely throw up either way and he needs some hydration. Hugs momma!! I remember lo's first stomach bug, it was rough. So much puke....

Thanks ladies. He nursed a little before bed and kept it down. I did 2 short sessions 5 minutes apart. We'll see how overnight and tomorrow goes.
How's today going? Breastmilk is considered a clear liquid in most illnesses so keep nursing. Yes if he's just throwing it right back up you can do a short sesion and wait 10-15 minutes to let it settle and then repeat. Some of the antibodies and such are absorbed very quickly so even if be puked back up the breastmilk some of it enters his system and will speed healing.
I would continue nursing. The times my LO has been sick we would spend most of our days nursing to help keep him hydrated and also to comfort him. Hang in there mama
Yeah! Glad to hear he's better. I remember one particularly nasty bug when my Oldest was nursing and was letting him nurse five minutes it would stay firm for sbout ten minutes and then it would partly come back up. Wait fifteen minutes and repeat. Gradually it would stay down longer and less would come back up but that took a while. Dr was Saying that if we hadn't been nursing still (he was over a year) that he would have needed iv fluids since he could keep nothing else down for like four days.
