Boston, MA has all the sights, for sure, but venture out to the North Shore area and visit Salem. It's the most fun in October for Halloween, but definitely peak tourist season.

I'm in RI - most people love the beaches, or the newport cliff walks. I'm in the woods at the opposite side of the state.
This is a really good question though - I actually met a couple who traveled to a different state every year on their anniversary and they hope to visit all 50 states over 50 years
I'm in CA and could not begin to answer that question. I will suggest Sequoia NP, Joshua Tree NP, the rarely-visited Mojave Wildlife reserve, and Palm Springs which are semi-near me. As someone who lives more or less in LA, I'd never want to vacation here. I love living here though.

This is actually what we are trying to do. We have gone to New York for Niagra Falls and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
Hmmm... I live in Kansas City, Missouri. It depends on what you want to see. St. Louis of course had the arch among other things, and there are a lot of wineries just south of the STL metro. Kansas City has a lot of art and culture, BBQ, and jazz!

My book-geek family and I went to Laura Ingalls Wilder's house in MO one year on vacation. I thought that was really cool.

Well you already came to NY but I'm downstate. I have been upstate a few times but it really is a different world than what I am used to. If you haven't visited Manhattan you really should, from what I hear from tourists it really is unlike any other city. And unlike Boston is really easy to navigate.
I live in Northern California so I can tell you some awesome stuff up here: Santa Cruz beach Boardwalk Monterey bay aquarium San Francisco: Alcatraz, Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard street, haight street Napa valley (so much wine!!!!) The redwoods (sooooo beautiful) Lake Tahoe

I love Northern California (and Oregon). For our 10 year anniversary in 3 years, h and I are planning on going out to San Fran and Napa. We've both been but not together.

There's also Hannibal, where Mark Twain grew up. Another fun place for book- lovers!

This year is our 10 years together (4 married) I'm hoping DH will want to go somewhere cool since we couldn't last year with me being all pregnant and all
Come to CT in the fall and go to Lyman or Bishops Orchards: beautiful leaves, pumpkins, corn maze, all things fall. Also check out a couple stops along the CT wine trail!

Maine is a beautiful state all around, but if you have to choose one place, Acadia National Park takes the cake. It's beautiful and there's so much to do!

Oh fun!!! I am happy to give you winery recommendations if you'd like! My DH and go there about every two months or so and always try at least one new winery each time.
Michigan is surprisingly beautiful and diverse. There are, of course, the Great Lakes, which come along with beaches, sand dunes, water sports, etc. Then we have lots of hilly areas and amazing ski resorts. Autumn is beautiful in northern Michigan. Then, we also have cool urban areas: Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Detroit (not scary if you stick to the downtown and midtown areas). There is TONS to do in those cities. And then, getting more into my personal tastes, there are a metric ton of breweries and wineries throughout the state. Michigan is known for being one of the best beer states, and I'm particularly impressed by their wines as well.
So, that's a surface level for MI. I actually love my state, except for right now, because this snow can bite me.
