So I'm finally giving in...I am completely over washing dishes. I feel like its never done. So, I'm looking at dishwashers. I would prefer not to spend a fortune, but in my browsing tonight...im realizing this is going to be a more expensive purchase than I originally thought.
A few things we want - 1. Stainless steel drum 2. Silverware in the bottom rack, not on the door 3. A heavy duty wash would be a perk, but not required.

Ours is a KitchenAid and has all of your requirements. As long as it doesn't get overfilled, I cleans well. Not sure of model due to it being in our house when we bought it.
ssm the one I REALLLLLLY want is I believe a Bosch and its $1800!!!! DH was like yea for that price it better wash dry and put all the damn dishes away! LOL
The ladies on parenting say Bosch....it is the one I was looking at, but I was afraid of the price tag. But, apparently, they are worth it - mcncheese
So, now to come up with 600$
I have always heard Bosch is really good but when we were shopping for one, we were told that they do not have a disposal (or something like that) so if you put dishes in the dishwasher with food still on it, it will accumulate at the bottom so you have to clean it out every so often or it will start to smell. I guess most dishwashers have something to get rid of the food but Bosch doesn't. So it made us not buy a Bosch because I knew I would forget to clean it out often enough. We ended up getting a Samsung for our old house and I was not impressed at all so stay away from that brand (they have known issues).
My current dishwasher is a Whirlpool. It does not have a stainless steel drum but they make a similar one with stainless. The silverware basket can be used either on the door or in the bottom rack, and I like having the option. I think it has a heavy duty wash cycle but I'm not sure because I always just use the normal wash. It's very quiet and we've been happy with it so far. If you want a stainless drum, you're probably looking at at least $600 for most brands. Our Samsung has a stainless drum and I'm not really sure what the advantage is supposed to be because we didn't notice any difference.

Hmmm...i will definitely need to double check and make sure it has the food grinder disposal thingy in there.
Oh and about the stainless drum - sleepymonkey It depends on where you live. Our current house - it wouldn't be a huge deal because we have city water. BUT, if/when we move outside of city limits or have well water, the minerals stain and deteriorate the plastic tubs. So, it goes from white to dingy rusty colored

ssm - That makes sense then. We have city water where we live so it doesn't matter for us. My MIL has horrible well water and loves her Kitchenaid dishwasher with the stainless steel tub. And maybe Bosch has changed in the past few years since we were shopping for a dishwasher but not having the food grinder was a deal breaker for us.
I will tell you which one NOT to get... Fridgidaire Gallery. I am not sure of the exact model number we have but it is loud, doesn't dry worth a damn unless you use their 'sahara' setting and we had to call service on it already because it was leaking water all over my kitchen floor. We had it for only a year at the time. Again, not 100% on the modle number but stay away from these! If I don't use the Sahara dry setting, & I cannot unload it right away, I seriously get MOLD on my dishes. Using that setting along with dishwashing detergent with bleach is what we have to use. www.frigidaire.com/Kitchen-Appliances/Dishwashers/Dishwasher/FGID2466QF/
I have heard awesome things about Bosch & KitchenAide. When it comes to appliances that touch water (dishwasher, fridge) it is worth spending the extra for better quality. We will spend the extra when we are able to replace this one.
WE have a GE profile which fulfills all of your wants. I think it is fairly mid range although it came in our condo so I can't be sure. It has a heavy duty wash and a anti bacterial which is helpful for babies etc.

I can't tell by looking at it what model number it is, but ours is a Kenmore Elite. We got it at Sears for around $600-700 but it was on a really good sale. I think full price it was $1100
