That's crazy they make it so hard for you guys to see a LC our hospital was really good about this. Breastfeeding is defiantly hard work and a process to get the hang of
All your LC woes remind me of the list I had started for room for improvement for the hospital when DD had her surgery.
Some were less important - i.e.: build a waiting room with nooks and crannies so parents can cry for 10 hours without feeling on display, but some were along the same lines as the LC issues... Kids are in the hospital week round, why wasn't child life open on the weekends?!?!
We had DD during the week and left before the weekend, so now I'm curious if the LCs are available at our hospital on a weekend. Either way, I learned to breastfeed from the nurses, not the LC. (And definitely not the class we took!)
This thread is making me feel like I need a refresher in Newborn nursing because it's totally different than the 13 month old I was last breast feeding a year and half ago Hopefully it's like riding a bike......

The hospital LC last time did nothing for me. Fortunately the pedi had an LC on staff who would come into your regularly scheduled pedi appts if you wanted. I spent a good hour working with her in the first week and that helped a lot.
Man...I come from a hospital (used to work there and now deliver there) that does A LOT of breastmilk and breastfeeding research and has a HUGE lactation program. They have LCs 24/7 AND all the nurses go through 8-20hrs of training depending on their prior experience. The one where I work is more like what you guys are describing though. LC is actually only available M-F during the day, but again, all the nurses have gone through extensive training AND we schedule our volunteer "lactation peers" so that we have evening/night/weekend coverage.
k3am, you'll be happy to know our hospital also has weekend child life specialists. Because like you said, hospitals have kids 24/7!
Still, even though I know i'll have access to LCs, I'm scared. I am SOOOOOOOO hoping this LO doesn't have the tight jaw DS had. DS didn't have any ties but we had him evaluated for them early on. It was a struggle initially to say the least. I'm hopeful this time will be better!
We are waiting to make sure labs are good to go home! I was so happy this morning when in walked a volunteer lactation "peer"! She spent 30 minutes with us and since then E has been feeding 30-40 minutes at a time. I feel so much better. Im sore, but i'm pretty sure thats normal and is tolerable. Thank God for her! Annnnd she hopefully got my pump issues figured out so i can get one tomorrow *fingers crossed*
I had B on a Tuesday so not sure if the LCs would have been there on the weekend or not. I saw them twice, but my nurses also helped me with breastfeeding and clearly knew what they were doing.
I'm so nervous about breastfeeding again. DS and I had such a hard time in the beginning. I'm hoping to be able to do it without a shield this time. Using a nipple shield I was embarrassed to nurse in public because it was hard to be discreet.
The only thing making me feel better about this time is I have all you ladies for support.

I'm trying to wean off the shield for this same reason! I'm so glad to have this group for support too!

Our weight gain wasn't good enough at our pedi appt today so I'm now introducing a bottle of breast milk once a day. I'm sad and hoping she doesn't start boycotting the boob.

That's good to hear! I want her to take bottles too eventually so I'm trying to tell myself that this will be ok!

I'm sorry. What was her weight gain? B's has been at the very bare minimum but my pedi seems pretty relaxed about that because she keeps telling me he's doing great. Do you already have pumped milk? How/when does your pedi want you to pump in order to do the bottle?

She lost 2 ounces after birth and has only gained back 1 ounce. I do have some pumped milk from when she destroyed my nipple and I pumped it for a day to give it a break. She told me to give her 2 ounces a day of pumped milk. We decided to give her a 1/2 ounce in a syringe after 4 feelings instead of a bottle until she is 4 weeks based on the lactation consultant recommendation. I am pumping after a couple feelings to keep my stash up.

We had to give bottles of pumped milk within the first week while we work on nursing with DD because of wieght gain. We actually did every feeding with a bottle and kept going back for weight checks at the pedi. We didnt have any issues with bottle over boob and just worked on nursing. By 3 or 4 weeks, we went back to nursing full time with a bottle here and there ( she was going to daycare eventually so we needed her to want a bottle) hope you have the same luck!!
westiemom, I know i'm an internet stranger but I do take care of babies for a living. 2oz is NOT a significant amount of weight loss to begin with (for a baby her size) so I really think your pedi is over reacting a little bit. Babies, especially breastfed babies, can lose 10-15% of their birth weight before starting to regain. It is EXPECTED they will lose a good 5-10% and that is from the brown fat metabolism. Brown fat is tissue that when metabolized produces heat and energy for babe, especially in the period in which milk comes in. Oli.via was born weighing 6lbs, 5oz, or 2.86kg. If she lost 2oz, her lowest weight was 2.8kg (60grams = 2oz) She hasn't lost that much weight to begin with. I understand she had bili issues, but even those are resolved especially if you keep putting her under indirect sunlight often. I would ask your doctor why he/she feels 2oz is clinically significant as she has regained 50% of what she lost. Yes, It's been 2 weeks but if she's gaining, she's gaining. I wouldn't worry about a bottle, although of course it will not hurt. I would focus instead on: Feed every 2-3hours, including overnight until she gets to 6lbs, 6-8oz. Do not let her go over 3hrs from start of one feed to the start of the next feed. Make sure she is emptying your breast and getting the fatty hind milk. To get her to get more of the fatty hind milk, pump for 3-5 minutes first to get rid of a little bit of the skim foremilk (save this milk for later).
Once she regains all her birthweight and hits 42-43 corrected weeks (2-3 weeks from now) you can let her eat more on demand, which would include NOT waking her up to eat especially at night. Just my two professional cents.
I agree completely with babycaps (other than about the foremilk and hindmilk, I don't think that makes a difference at all). Your pedi is way over reacting. Nurse nurse nurse. The weight loss is so minimal!

mrssqueegy, the foremilk/hindmilk is definitely a stretch! I don't think it's REALLY necessary but it is something that could be done to get a few more calories in. and it's "a few" more. Literally.

We are such good BFFs. Even disagreeing so pleasantly.

Thanks y'all! I was so heartbroken but I seriously thought we were doing good! I appreciate your validation and support. I know I'm producing because I can pump 3 oz when I don't feed her off a boob (when I let my nipple heal) and when I take her off the boob, she spits milk all over me so I know she is getting it. I just wish she would gain and get the pedi off my ass!

westiemom, I'm with babycaps on this. B was 5lbs11oz at birth and dropped to 5lbs3oz in 2 days!!!! My pedi just had me come back the next day (was a Friday) and Monday and he was 5,4 and then 5,6.5 so she wasn't concerned and let me continue EBF.
Not saying to ignore your doctor but that just doesn't seem like worrisome weight loss/gain in my experience.

Also westiemom, at B's 2 week appointment he was 5lbs, 10.5oz so almost birth weight and his dr was happy with that. I'm using the facts that I nurse on demand for as long as he wants plus his great and frequent dirty diapers as signs that he's getting enough and is just a little on the slow-growing side.

DS1 lost over a pound before we got BFing figured out and he started gaining again. I'm very thankful that the pedi we had then was super supportive and just got us extra time with the LC.
