My milk came in as well, and they are super uncomfortable! What the right technique for hand expressing?
Cup your boob with you hand in a "c" shape and press towards your nipple. Sometimes I do better if I make a fist and rub from my arm pit area towards my nipple slowly. It's easy to feel for clogs this way too.

Thank you so much for the thread. Lurking from aug16 (baby was born 7/20). I've been crying and freaking out daily because of so many of these things. Figured out a few days ago that I have wicked OALD. I have to let him suck for a minute then pull him and squeeze into cloth and then even when I give it back to him, he still seems overwhelmed by flow. I kept thinking "surely other people aren't dealing with this?! How am I supposed to ever leave the house or feed in public?!" But it's nice to see I'm not the only one going through it and hopefully it'll subside soon.
Was also getting worried about him only feeding for 5-10 min one side per feeding. But his diapers say he's getting enough.
We're also having issues with gas because he like refuses to burp. So then he's up all night moaning in pain or spitting up. We've tried gripe water, drops, keeping him upright for 30 min and nothing seems to help. I wish there was some position to make him burp but I try so many and he hates them all and arches and screams or just plain falls asleep.
Thanks for your stories and feel free to offer any additional advice. Hope it gets better for all of us soon!
Hi spicysalmonroll! Same exact story over here. Baby boy was born 7/14, so almost 3 weeks, and it's getting better. I don't spray him in the face at every feed, still some, and he's getting better at burping. Nursing reclined so his head is up and over the breast, and side lying have both helped some. Nights we're still having some issues with him being really uncomfortable after eating, but I'm hopeful it will get better as his system matures.
Glad it was helpful for you to know you're not the only one, and I hope it gets better for you soon. Newborns are tricky little puzzles.
spicysalmonroll OALD is no joke. If I have a letdown in the shower I have like four streams from each boob without hand expressing at all. Thankfully LO seems to keep up better than his brother did at this age.
Pro tip: for NIP wear a dark shirt just in case you wind up covered in milk.
I quickly became a pro at standing up and latching LO. It seemed to help both of us when trying to latch on public the first few times

M had his tongue clipped today and it was way easier than I thought it would be. He barely cried! Fx his latch is better.
On another note I got really sick Monday...mild fever, hard right boob and almost migraine. I was in bed all day! I thought mastitis, but it might just be a clogged duct. I had no idea how sick yiu can get from breastfeeding boob issues.
tikoberry99 glad you're feeling better! Mastitis comes on quick and it's miserable. I had it twice with ds1 . Keep and eye on the clog, if it gets redder or starts to get bigger call your OB ASAP. After hours line of its MOTN. The quicker you get on Abx the better
So I have only been able to get L to take my left breast as I have talked about before. I am not sure if I have a milk blister or clogged duct or if my nipple is just over-used so it's just plain old sore. But when he latches, I get shooting pains for the first minute or so. It's fine then after that while he nurses. Afterward my breast doesn't really feel the same relief as the right one does after I pump. Right now my left breast still is super sore and painful. I'm dreading my next nursing session and I'm feeling really confused as to what it is.
I am calling the LC tomorrow to make an appointment. I'm just venting here because I am feeling lots of emotions at the moment. It's only been a week and while I really really want to BF, I'm already at my wits end with the pain and the effort.

Vent away!!! I'm sorry it's been so tough for you! FX you can get some relief soon!

It's frustrating because he latches and nurses really well on that breast so I feel like it's a me problem. You know?

Have you tried pumping both sides & just bottle feeding until left boob heals? When we first started, my left side got super sore/cracked/scabbed & him latching on was excruciating. When I wound up in tears one night at him latching, I just pumped that side & fed from the right until it healed enough. Took about 2-3 days. If you go that route, put some breast milk on the nipple & air dry, followed by lanolin or your preferred nipple cream multiple time per day.

willow M will only latch onto my left side and I think I have a clogged duct in my right breast and it's super painful so I totally can relate. I've had the "should I just give up" moments but I'm trying to push through. The lc I saw really made me feel better so I hope she can help you too. I've also noticed I get really emotional after I pump/breastfeed...which does not help with wanting to push forward....stupid hormones.

I'm considering going that route because I really can't stand the thought of him latching on again tonight. I worry that it will make him not latch well again if I only bottle feed for a few days with no boob but maybe I can figure out the trick for him to take the right breast if I can get to the LC before the end of the week.

It's so frustrating. I'm sorry you're having similar issues too. I knew BFing wasn't going to be simple or always super comfortable but I hate feeling like a failure.

willow last time i had a large amount of pain in my left breast i had an inverted nipple and i ended up using a nipple shield for 5 weeks on that side because it was so hard and painful to get her to latch on that side. It felt like a knife stabbing my nipple and going out the left side of my boob. The nipple shield made it bearable and by 5 weeks i could tell she did not like the shield any more it was not that painful to transition away from it so that maybe another option for you.
willow, with my older son, we had so many latch issues, and I would cry thinking about my next feed. I so wanted to enjoy breastfeeding but was miserable. But it was important to me so I just kept seeing LCs to try to get help. What made the biggest difference was using a nipple shield. I used one for 11 weeks - I know that's longer than recommended, but it was the only thing that got me through the pain. Around the 3 month mark, nursing was so easy so I'm glad I kept at it.
But you are not a failure regardless of what you do. Breastfeeding is HARD! It sucks at times. You may resent your baby for wanting to eat so often. Go easy on yourself, and I hope things improve soon!

We hit the three week growth spurt a little early. Cluster feeding all day yesterday a d he was awake and nursing from 1-4 overnight with a few 30 minute naps. Dude. Not cool.

is the 3 week growth spurt a thing? Because OMG we've hit it. Suddenly non-stop nursing and no naps longer than 30 min.

Totally a thing. This is day 2 for us. DD did it for 3 days. I fully expect him to gain a pound overnight or something.

Ugh melody I'm sorry. how do you know if you have a clogged duct? Like what does it look like? Google images only gives me cartoon drawings.
It feels like a hard lump/knot and is very painful and hot to the touch. After a feeding the lump doesn't go away. The fever usually comes next and once I get the red streaks going towards my nipple I'm a goner. If I still have a fever in the am I'm calling my MW. FX it doesn't get worse over night.

after your description I'm wondering if I have it too. Idk if I have a fever because I can't find a damn thermometer in this house, but the underside of my left breast is red like its sunburnt and still hard after feeding.

Are you wearing a bra with underwire? Or perhaps one that's too tight? At this point in the game I'm still wearing "sleeping" bras because my boobs can't tolerate a real bra. I get clogged ducts immediately when I have to put on a real bra.

I've only been wearing nursing bras or tanks, so nothing with underwire. I'm going to see if I can get into the LC tomorrow (today technically) to figure out what it is.
