Ugh we're still having latch issues but every time I go to the LC she says she's fine. But my nipples are destroyed so I beg to differ. I don't know what else to do. I feel like I've tried every position, a nipple shield, rocking her while feeding her, etc. And no tongue/lip tie either.
How old is your little now? The first week was really rough for me but then my nips toughened up. I don't even use my lanolin now.
My back is f*kng killing me. Suggestions? Idk how to BF without leaning over hunch back of Notre-dame like.
Also - any one else's boob get incredibly itchy as they nurse? It's driving me nuts.
I am a whiny mc-whinerton tonight.
Pillows, lots of them. Try out different positions, I prefer the football hold or cross-cradle. Don't lean forward to bring breast to baby, bring their head to you. I find the easiest way for me is the sit in the recliner, pillow on my lap for support, bring baby up to latch on & then pull my knees up to support baby's weight.

My milk hasn't come in yet, it's only day 3 so I know it's not odd, but L will almost always refuse my right breast, no matter the position I try. It took a ton of coaxing by both myself and the nurses to get him to do it at the hospital and now I don't have that same hands on (literally) help at home. My right breast is bigger l
Is it bad for him to get most of his feeding from the left side, is my colustrum gonna be enough from one breast til my milk comes in? I have to get my pump still (insurance wouldn't release it til baby was born) so I can't pump my right side yet.

willow did you just see nurses in the hospital or a LC? If you didn't see an LC I would suggest visiting to see if they can give you any indication as to why L is refusing that side.
I would always offer that side first just to see if he will latch. If not then offer the other side and see if you can hand express the milk from the other side.

At the hospital he always eventually got it but that was after a lot of fighting against both my and the nurses hands, and now I only have my own. My doula is a LC and she's coming to visit me tomorrow so maybe she'll be able to help. Right now it's frustrating because my poor left nipple is so sore!

willow my only idea is to try a different position. Laid back or football hold especially might position the baby differently. Once when my daughter had an ear infection she refused on side and I think it was because it made her ear hurt o lay on that side. Good luck. I hope you figure it out or at least get a good solution tomorrow.
Breastfeeding all the time is normal right now, right? (1.5 weeks old). Like sometimes it's every hour during the day she is eating. Also-she fusses a ton when she is gassy or wants to poop and sometimes will want to nurse to help move things along-which does seem to help. She'll cry/scream until she can get gas out or poop-is all that normal?

Totally 100% normal. If you want to try gripe water that works great too.
My mom ran out and bought a Medela harmony manual pump just to see if I could get anything out of my right breast. My milk still isn't in and the amount of colostrum was pretty lame so I stopped. At least it stimulates the nipple though so I might try doing it before the next feed and see if having a little already coming out will help him.
I wish my milk would come in though. He hasn't pooped in 36 hours, is that bad? He's had wet diapers. He pooped 5 times at the hospital though.
willow using the pump to stimulate the other side is fine, just remember what you pump is never a good indication of what baby gets at breast. All it shows is how much you pump. Don't get discouraged if you get nothing for a while!
willow pumping is also an art. Even once you have milk and a double electric, you'll have to learn what works for you to get a letdown. It's pretty different from nursing.
Your milk should be in soon. I think the nurses told me 72 hours-ish is typical. Mine came in late the third day this time, but late the 4th day with my first.

Thanks-I needed a little reassurance! DH keeps asking why she's so fussy when she has gas/poops and I kept telling him I think it's normal-she's so little still.
We had such a difficult time with bf my son a few years ago (he had milk protein allergies and I nursed through it and eliminated dairy, whey, soy and casein), that I think we're both a little nervous about bf this time. I had a lot of anxiety w my son bc of his eating and weight issues that we're trying to avoid this time.

My daughter didn't poop for 36 hrs either after the hospital. Then the dr took her temp rectally and she pooped like 5 times that next day lol. They weren't too worried about not pooping bc she had done it at the hospital and was wetting diapers still so I'd say it's fine. Maybe take a rectal temp?

Ok, so my overactive letdown is back with this baby. I was reading about laid back nursing, has anyone tried this? More importantly does it help? Poor S coughs and pulls off and I think he would BF longer if my letdown wasn't so strong.

Yes, I do it often, although DS is particular, so sometimes I end up doing football hold instead. It definitely helps. I usually lay him across my belly and support his head/neck so he can stay on and not roll off my boob since no neck control yet. Another thing that helps me is hand expressing or pumping for a minute or two to get past the letdown.

Another question, how long did it take for the engorgement after your milk cam in to subside? I offer S one breast per feeding but he doesn't always empty that one at the end because it's so full. I would start block feeding but I know all the websites say not to do this in the first few weeks.

I think I was engorged for a good two weeks. I made the mistake of pumping one side in the morning way too early and caused all sorts of problems.
I wouldn't start block feeding this early at all. I had OALD and oversupply with my first, and I just followed his lead regarding offering the second side.
Also, if LO is choking on you let down keep a burp cloth handy and when you feel it just spray into the cloth for a minute or two. It calms down quickly. I did this for a good month, but it makes for a hard time NIP.
Once DS was done with one side I would only offer the other side if he was rooting again. He rarely took both sides unless it was a growth spurt. Sometimes DS2 only takes one side now. NBD

I've had oald and some engorgement and I think at just over 2 weeks things are getting better...today was better from a nursing standpoint anyway. I've been trying to position him more "uphill" once he's latched or side lie so he has better control without choking. I think my supply may be evening out though and hopefull the letdown will chill a bit.
You other post said something about him nursing longer...don't worry about that unless you're not seeing enough diapers or weight gain. My guy usually takes about 5 minutes, and only one side, and he's gaining beautifully. Besides my oald, he's a gulper. He doesn't really comfort nurse because he's still getting milk when he doesn't want it; the couple of times he's tried he spit up after.

lol jealous your dude only takes 5. Mine will stay on for 30mins+ at least. Feelings take forever.
What method do you use for burping when your baby falls asleep after nursing? After the 1st side, I have him sit while I hold his face and pat his back which generally gets a burp out. But he generally passes out after side 2 so I don't want to wake him. I pat his back and hold him upright for a bit, but he still spits up sometimes.

This is what we do too. Most of the time he doesn't burp the second side. I just make sure he gets all the bubbles out before I offer the second side. Spit up happens, but it's usually not too bad

I try to burp S every time he eats. In the MOTN he is swaddled even during feeding S so I just sit him up and gently pat his back and hold the back of his head keeping it upright. If he doesn't burp within get a minute or so I just give up. Sometimes he spits up and last night he even got the hiccups but we deal with it if he is awake.

If he does wake up does he go back to sleep easy?
Thanks. Spit up doesn't bother me - I just want to make sure he doesn't choke while laying on his back. That's my bigger concern, but I can only try to burp him for so long. This was only night 3 - he gave one 1.5 hr stretch, but the other stretches were 20-40 min. Too early to complain, but that was rough. At least he does go back to sleep somewhat easily - I nurse for about 30 min total. But who knows what his normal will be. I need to toughen up in the sleep department and bribe DS1 for any extra sleep I can get!

I just hold him upright under the arms and bounce him a bit. I'd he doesn't burp after a couple minutes i just put him back. He rarely spits up.

I thought I saw this discussed somewhere, but I can't find it so sorry if this is a repeat topic. I'm 3 days postpartum, and my milk came in yesterday evening. I have a lot of milk (was the same with DS1) and am so engorged. Besides feeding often, what can I do to offer relief? It's so uncomfortable, and except for just a few moments following a feed, my boobs are rock hard all the time.

Hand express enough for comfort and avoid any extra stimulation that would encourage milk production.

Besides hand expressing for comfort, not much. A Motrin for the pain might help but the less you do the quicker it will even out.
If it's really bad I'll throw a washcloth over them and let hot water run on my chest, but this stimulates letdown and can encourage more milk supply. I don't do this often.
Watch it for red spots on your breast or nipple, those can be clogged ducts and you'll want to deal with those quickly.
At 11 days PP it's only bad at night now. It's tough for sure, but it won't last long!
