tikoberry99, my LC gave me "permission" to use a paci after he gained back his birth weight. He is not super receptive to it even 3 weeks later, but he will take it sometimes. I only offer it after he has fed. I have not noticed any change in latch or supply.
DS is 2 weeks tomorrow. I've tried giving him a paci and once in a while he takes it, but mostly not. I'm not concerned about nipple confusion with a pacifier - he knows where the milk comes from. Sometimes he seems like he just wants to comfort suck but he gets mad because he keeps getting milk from me, so I'd be happy if he'd actually take the paci more often.
I gave L a paci while still in the hospital. At first I gave it to him after he'd been nursing forever but was not happy. He basically still gets it for the same reason and he gets it overnight too. It hasn't messed up his latch and he has no problems spitting out the binky if he's hungry. It's saved my sanity when I can't calm him down and I know he's not hungry.
Speaking of pacifiers any BF mom's using them? I was hoping Maddox would find his thumb to suck on that, but no luck and I keep reading no pacifiers until 4 weeks if you are breast feeding to avoid nipple confusion. I feel he wants to suck for comfort, but don't know if we should try a paci.
We have a newborn pacifier that came with our advent bottles. We only use it if he is absolutely flipping his shit and I can't BF (ex driving) or if he's done feeding clearly and just won't go down. We take it away ASAP though he usually spits it out on his own after a couple minutes.
No confusion so far - he still latches quite quickly 95% of the time.
Apparently the newborn ones are specially designed? I have no idea honestly.

This exactly for us. We just introduced bottles yesterday as well. No issues with confusion or latch.

We use a pacifier. E sucks for comfort A LOT..my nipples would never survive & he would be attached to me all day. No effect on his latch & my supply is good so far, so I'll just keep on keeping on.

This is the same for us too. We've been bottle feeding at night since we got home too and she still latches fine during the day. I let her comfort nurse at times but I generally will try to give her a paci instead. She isn't too much of a fan of the paci but big sister wasn't either, unless she was stealing them from other kids at daycare lol!
f has been breaking off and choking/spluttering on milk a lot the past at and a half and will get mad hiccups after. Normal? Am I doing something wrong?
His poops also changed suddenly. They used to be more yellow and seedy/slimy. Now they are more tan and no seeds but very watery.

Could you have overactive letdown? A does this sometimes and I think my milk is coming down too fast. I've heard it corrects itself over time (I hope). You can also try expressing milk until the letdown slows, or nurse with him on top of you so gravity is on your side. These are things I have read, but are hit or miss for me. The change in poop could be related to it maybe. I have heard with overactive letdown, they get more foremilk than hindmilk which can make poops different.
Someone feel free to correct me if any of this sounds wrong.

You got it, girl. I dealt with this exact issue 2 weeks ago Ray, only the poops turned green and foamy. Would you say the poop is mucousy? If not, I'd say overactive letdown. Pumping 1-2 minutes before feeds really helped. And save that gold! You can combine your pumped milk each day. If the poop is tan and mucousy, call your pedi as that can be a sign of intolerance/allergy.

The poops sound ok. If they go to green, I think that's a sign of oversupply. But the sputtering, pulling off, and hiccups sound like overactive letdown - I'm struggling with that as well. Do you spray him in the face when he pops off? Mine will pretty much spray across the room if nothing is blocking it. I hold a burp cloth over for about 30 seconds before putting him back on. He's still getting a ton of milk at once.
It can correct over time as your supply evens out and as he gets bigger and can handle more. Supply is constantly adjusting right now. I'm going to talk to an lc after our pedi appt today, but everything I've read says not to try to adjust supply down until after 4 weeks.

hmm ok. No spurting sometimes there's dribbles
my milk doesn't spurt out (mostly), but I do have overactive letdown. Is the choking and sputtering early in the feed? Does he settle into it more after 3-5 minutes? The hiccups are due to the proximity of the diaphragm and stomach. When the stomach gets a little overfull, it can trigger hiccups. It might help to keep your baby upright for a little while before lying him down... We also seemed to have more hiccups around 2 weeks then we have had this week.

Well shoot, maybe I have overly-overactive letdown. It's cray.
I like this and will bookmark it but I also worry that it might create problems if you start looking for meaning in everything. My first did all of these things at least occasionally and she was healthy and nursed well until weaning as a toddler. Expect your baby to do all these things on occasion. That doesn't mean you have nursing "problems" that need solutions. Most things work out if you just keep going and keeput the baby at the breast (that's in regular circumstances, obviously some people have very real problems they shouldn't ignore). I feel like healthy breastfeeding moms get tripped up on all this stuff that doesn't matter if the baby is growing well because we really don't have a cultural education on healthy breastfeeding and most of us, me included, get all our info as we're doing it as complete novices. I realize I may be overreacting to this but I have big positive feelings about breastfeeding but didn't feel nearly as confident with my first newborn.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think milk being on the slow or fast side necessarily needs intervention. I mean, I know that my baby is slightly overwhelmed by my letdown, but he deals with it by pulling off and spitting milk all over me when he needs to... and that is not always. I also think that similar behaviors can mean different things...
Does anyone else's LO have two toned lips after feeding? I don't remember DD1 having that but this one has more trouble latching.
Yes. Sometimes I've noticed his lips are a little purple or very red in some spots.
Did you get your LO to latch any better?
Edit- nevermind I see your update on the BF board! Glad to see you found something to help a little. I wonder if maybe she's having a hard time turning her head if she prefers one position over others?

Ray my boob doesn't but the underside of my chin does everytime. If i am remembering its related to hormones released while feeding. I looked it up last time.
My back is f*kng killing me. Suggestions? Idk how to BF without leaning over hunch back of Notre-dame like.
Also - any one else's boob get incredibly itchy as they nurse? It's driving me nuts.
I am a whiny mc-whinerton tonight.
How are you positioned? At night I side lie, so I just scoot her up next to me. You need to bring the baby to the breast, not the other way around. If you turn them on their side, and hold them in the crook of your arm, that works well too.

Pillows galore! I use a My Brest Friend and put a pillow under that to bring DS higher and then 2-3 pillows of varying size under my supporting elbow. Also support for your feet/legs like an ottoman or recliner help.
I'm big on laid back nusing or side lying at night. I still have a tight sore feeling between my shoulder blades. It's terrible.
My latest gripe is that I'm 36 hours post tongue clipping and Mal is still figuring out how to latch. He latches on fine during the day but for night feedings, he's lazier and can get really pissed off and inconsolable. It took him almost half an hour to latch at 1 am. So I'm dripping, having a super tingly letdown, he's screaching and mad. It was an ugly scene. He eventually got it and he's eating fine. I hope he adjusts quickly.
Ugh we're still having latch issues but every time I go to the LC she says she's fine. But my nipples are destroyed so I beg to differ. I don't know what else to do. I feel like I've tried every position, a nipple shield, rocking her while feeding her, etc. And no tongue/lip tie either.

Mine are just now feeling better. For a while there I thought my nipples were going to fall off and we're so painful. I don't know if her latch got better or my nipples just toughened up. But here I am 3 weeks out and they are now fine.
