2nd question: how do I know if he's sucking because that's what babies do when something is in their mouths and when he's sucking because he's actually trying to eat? Sometimes I think he's done and I try to pull away and he starts givin'r again.
f is 2.5 days old and has been wanting to nurse All. morning. No milk yet. Is there even enough colostrum to fill him up? I feel bad because he seems so hungry.
Very common. My little guy cluster fed for 2 hours at a time on day 2, and then all night for the next 3 nights. He was partly making up for a couple of sleepy days. Their stomachs are tiny so even if they do get full, they need to eat often. Plus it helps ready your body and let it know your baby is looking for that good milk. You'll see it happen with growth spurts too - they eat more often to up your production.
Don't feel bad! Just keep feeding him and get rest when you can.

You can see nutritive sucking (when he is eating) by seeing his jaw and temple kind of twitch. You should be able to hear him swallow, which sounds kind of like he's saying, "Ahh" like an adult would after taking a gulp of a refreshing drink. Swallows are not evident right away and he may have to take a few sucks before swallowing. As F gets older, it will be easier to see/hear.
Comfort nursing is just sucking (you won't see the jaw/temple twitch or hear swallows) and is great for those first few days to stimulate nipples for more milk production. Us C-section mamas can take a little more time for milk to arrive in full mode, so I made sure to offer him the breast every 1.5-2 hours if he didn't cue first (opening mouth, turning head, hands to mouth).

Also, Ray, as he gets older, you will be able to feel the difference between sucking for food and sucking to suck. Sucking to suck feels more shallow and short, quick sucks. Eating sucking has long, drawn out sucks. Also, make sure you are using a nipple cream now after each feed to avoid raw nipples!

Omg yes to nipple cream! Sore nipples already. Thanks ladies!

Good luck. Mal is nursing like crazy today. He's borderline jaundiced so it's good for him. I've forgotten how intense it is. He sleeps for maybe 40 minutes and wakes up hungry. Immediately chewing his hand and no doubt about it, he's ready again.

My little one was so hungry and frustrated that he stopped latching (just spazzed out at the sight of boob). We knew he was dehydrated because he stopped producing wet diapers, so we supplemented from late night on day 2 till my milk came in the evening of day 3. He was nearly impossible to soothe the afternoon of day 2... All of this is to say, it sounds like your little one is doing better, but supplementing did not disrupt breastfeeding for us... So if you feel like he is getting hungrier and hungrier, it is something you could explore. You can supplement at the breast by having someone else slip the tubing in once he is latched or by using a system designed for that.

I can't link right now, but if you find Dr. Jack Newman on Facebook he has excellent videos about what productive sucking looks like! I'll try to grab them in a little bit
We are still getting the handle of things here. My nipples feel like they are going to fall off lol. Anyone else using an app to keep track of things?
I'm using Feed Baby and really like it!
One thing I did this time with sore nipples in the beginning was to take a break for a day, pump (with lanolin) instead of nurse, and then feed back with a bottle. That helped me tremendously!
We use the pace feeding method when we bottle feed (usually at night) to avoid her thinking that the milk comes that fast from me. Basically you feed for 5-10 seconds, take the bottle out of their mouth for a few seconds, and then repeat until they are done.
Been up since 2:45 nursing poor little dude and orange crystals in his pee. Dear lord I hope my milk comes in soon. Starting to worry he's getting too dehydrated. May have to supplement and pump in the a.m.

Sorry to hear this. DS had he same thing. If you're not already, breast compressions while you're nursing will help. Skin to skin when you're not nursing will encourage milk to come in. Good luck, hope fully your milk will come in today
Overactive letdown is so much fun - gassy baby and always soaked in my own milk.
This is me exactly!
Baby girl also gets a blister on her upper lip because she is such an aggressive sucker. It doesn't seem to bother her and falls off every couple of days just to come back. No wonder it took so long for my nipples to toughen up.

I have been pumping between feelings during the day pretty much since we got home from the hospital (we bottle feed the milk back at night). In my left boob I feel like I have double the supply than what I do in the right boob. I pump both sides when I do pump because I always feel like I need to release some from the left side, even after feeding. Any suggestions on how to even it out? I'm only pumping about 3 times a day and don't really want to do more than that, I hate pumping!

I am still a breastfeeding newb, but I have the exact same experience! My LC told me some boobs just have more milk than the other and that they will even out as supply regulates. In the meantime she suggested only pumping the full side twice a day for just a few minutes to get that extra out without causing more supply. I have been doing that for 5 days now and it seems to be working! Hope you get some relief soon!
I'm meeting w an LC on Monday, but my nipples are totally cracked and starting to scab over. Nursing kills right now, and of course she's nursing constantly. Her latch looks good and she's getting milk, but something must be wrong to have cut open my nipples so much.
Anyways, I got a nipple shield from her dr and that is helping. Would you start pumping too so we can offer her bottles sometimes instead of relying on me all the time? My concerns are that pumping will hurt a ton on my poor sore nips and she's only 4.5 days old. I don't want to cause nipple confusion by offering a bottle too soon. Would you start pumping now in my case?

I probably wouldn't but I'm pretty hardcore about making it work and I'm paranoid about creating new issues. I'd use the shield now and see what the LC recommends. If you don't have them, send someone to get you some gel breastpads now. I'm so sorry.

Are you putting some kind of nipple cream on many many times per day?
Laid back nursing has deepened Roar's latch and helped my pain.

I am using Lanolin and also putting breast milk on them afterwards. It's starting to look a little better now that I'm using the nipple shield at least.
We are 3 days PP so my milk hasn't come in yet. I started getting phantom letdown feeling while he is nursing so hopefully that's a good sign it's almost in. He has enough diapers everyday, but his urine is still a brick dust color
I had a really tough time with DD1 in the first 5 weeks with BFing. I was hoping it would be easier with DD2 but I already have cracked nipples and she spat up my blood yesterday. I'm trying this technique (deep latch with football hold) and that plus APNO cream is helping a bit but is there something else I should be doing? I thought she had a good latch but if I'm having cracked nipples then I guess she doesn't. At this point BFing is tougher on me than the sleep deprivation so I'll take any suggestions!
Has she been checked for a tongue tie by an LC? A friend was having similar problems and they ended up stemming from that issue. Her DD had it corrected and she is now still exclusively BF at one year!

Not by an LC but by the pediatrician and I have a little experience with it as a SLP and I don't see it either. I'm going to a BFing group run by a LC today so hopefully she can double check.SaveSave

Breast milk is a cure all for so many things including sore/cracked nipples. Hand express a bit and let it air dry. Very nice. DS has a blocked tear duct and his pedi told me in addition to massaging and warm compresses to put a drop of breast milk on the spot. It opened up in a day!

One of the nurses told me it's great for burns too!!
I got samples of mother's milk tea from the hospital. It says enjoy 3 - 5 cups a day. It's not bad, but I don't enjoy tea enough to have even 1 cup a day.

Especially in the summertime. Hot drinks in summer are not my style.
