Got the results of my maternit21 and it's a GIRL!!! We are so excited 😁 I'm especially thankful because we've been so solid on girls names but had such a hard time with boys. We've been thinking of a lot of Scottish/British names because DH is from Scotland born and raised. Middle name is most likely going to be Maria for my grandmother.
Some of these names are great! We are all over the place with our ideas. I like traditional name. With boys most of the names that I like are in the top 50 and I will not do that. DH is stuck on Charleston for a girl. I don't love it. I don't think it fits with our other names which are John Parker, Caroline Elizabeth, and Andrew Joseph. We have a lot of work to do!

babywisher, I definitely don't think Charleston goes with your other names. If DH likes southern place names I feel like Virginia or Georgia would be a better fit.

It's not the place that he likes it because of. We watched a show with the girl named Charleston and they called her Charlie.

Top 3:
Penelope Isla Poppy
A while back I was thinking Penelope nicknamed Poppy. It's a bit of a stretch, but it worked for me at the time.
I still love it, but am not sold on the name for myself.

Oh that's cute!! If we name her Penelope her nickname would be Penny which is adorable with our last name. And we're both Beatles fans so we think of Penny Lane too haha but I personally am stuck on Penelope. I like our other choices but unless she's totally not a Penny when we meet her then I have a feeling that might be it!
eameselephant I don't think that would be too weird! You like what you like!
babywisher I have a friend who named her son Charleston and calls him Charlie. I love it. They do end up calling him Charleston a lot.
sstwinklinglites out of curiosity, if you don't mind my asking, why don't you do middle names?
My family doesn't use them, and I really don't see any real point to them personally. When DH & I were trying to name DS, we had a really hard time, so deciding on a MN was something I didn't want to deal with, and since I didn't care for one anyway, we left it off.

That makes sense. Our wedding photographers didn't give their daughter a middle name. They said that it's something they'll let their kids choose when they're 16 and decide if they want to go by their new MN or their given name. I thought it was a neat idea.
My dad and his siblings were not born with middle names. We're Catholic so when confirmed you choose a confirmation name and that became their middle name (so around age 13)
Okay so after going over names with dh we are liking Preston James (James after dh and biblical) for a boy. AND I have talked him out of Charleston! We are kind of leaning towards Emily.
We have a boy name Jacob James (it's been my boy name forever and luckily H agrees) I'm torn for a girl name. I really love Annalise, but my hang up is it's a combo of names from H's side and of people I don't care for. This time is so hard, with A we had a boy and girl name so once we found out the sex the name was there. Luckily A was very much her name.
DS is Fox. I'm really only thinking about girl names because boy names are too hard. I really like Story and Rose (but would definitely be Rosey to me). We have others one of us like but none that stick out right now...

I like Rose as a first name - I only know people with it as a middle name irl

juliayadda love your names. Remington is a great one. It's rare, but not weird imo. Dh has a cousin named Remington and I've always thought it was awesome
I love that older fashioned names are coming back: aka Penelope, adaline, etc. We're hoping for a girl, and thinking Rowan Sadie or Sadie Rowan for the name. Rowan is really different and sometimes a man's name, so torn... but I like how unique it is. And Sadie was someone really important in my mama's life when she was a girl. She'll be thrilled with that name.

I love the name Sadie. I think of Rowan as a boy's name but whatevs. If you have a boy you could still use Rowan!

What do you do when the name you love has a nickname you hate? We decided to name baby Tucker (it is a family name and also we have had it picked out for two years). But my FIL has started already calling him Tuck and I hate it. I've told him repeatedly that I do not like the nickname, so now he just thinks it's funny, and I'm worried it'll stick and other relatives will start to call him that as well. WWYD?

Ugh that is annoying. If you really love the name then stick with it. I'm sure it won't stick if you guys keep saying emphatically TuckER.

I know some people have success just repeating the full name, you may want to/have your H speak to him about it if he's just doing it to be annoying - at least with close family you can cajole and threaten more easily.
Personally I stay away from names I hate the nn of. But I don't have a family name that I've run into that with and we tend to use family names a middle names.

I think you need to decide how much you hate the nickname. If it's going to make you mad anytime someone says Tuck I would try to find a different one. If you can live with it on occasion then I would go for it. It's not a super common NN, like if you were naming him Michael but hated the name Mike. DS has a name that people add a Y on the end and it annoys me but we decided that we liked the name more than he hated the NN so we went ahead and named him that- and we love his name.
Maybe if you told FIL that "Tuck" is ruining the name Tucker for you and you're thinking of going with something different to avoid the NN he would realize that he's being a dick and back off.

I have had to deal with that with both of my boys. Ds1 is John Parker and everyone wanted to know which we would call him. Nope both is all it is and will be. It didn't take long for people to understand. Then ds2 is Andrew. Not Andy or Drew. My mom was the worst with trying for either nn. Now no one calls him anything but Andrew. Just stand your ground with Tucker. Even if you FIL goes with Tuck then make sure no one else does.
