My Monday confession: half the time I don't make C eat lunch. I just give him a "snack cup" to eat on the couch. Todays had pepperoni, cheese, peppers, apples and cheerios so I figure it's similar to what he'd eat anyway but with less fuss.
I've only been once and the food was fine. Nothing exciting. Very mass produced.
For us it was very much a bang for your buck trip, so not having to pay for drinks/food was great! If we had been expecting an amazing culinary experience, it would've been disappointing.
Phenomenal at Sandals! Honestly I was blown away by how good it was. I've been to a few other places and they've been ok to good, IMO. That's usually what I expect since they know you a don't have other choices.

No shame there!
M won't eat anything mixed together. At. All.
So I basically havr to serve him a plate of one item at a time.
Here, have a plate of cucumber! Now here's a plate of chicken! Bowl of grapes? Here you go!
We do a lot of the divided plates so he can eat everything seperately.
Yes. But I think it matters what your priorities are. The last one we went to was a brand new, high-end all-inclusive and all the reviews were raving about the food. I tried it (was not impressed) and ended up going out for meals and grabbing snacks at the hotel when I was hungry. I get it, they need to make their money somewhere so they're not buying the best stuff. But, for me, trying local restaurants and exploring the area is such a big part of travel that I would rather pay for a great meal than eat a free mediocre one. I also think I have high expectations of food because I'm a little spoiled living in NY so that's on me.

It definitely is part of the experience. I guess I assumed that they would offer local dishes? Like if I'm at a resort in Jamaica I'd want to try Jamaican food.
I'm realizing this probably doesn't factor in much for me now as I'd probably have to eat fruit and potatoes at all meals.
PDQ, will poof:
I have a girlfriend who I think might be orthorexic. She took a vacation to New Orleans and would not eat out anywhere. In a city known for their unique cuisine. She cooked all her own meals at the condo she rented. I can't imagine doing that, I feel like you'd be missing out on a lot of the culture. But again, in hindsight, I think that there is an eating disorder starting to develop or that has been developing so I can't side-eye like she was just being weird.

tgrimes1980 Atlantis isn't an all-inclusive. You can buy meal plans but it's priced similarly as if you were buying the meals a la carte, but that's definitely why the food is so good there.

cagoldi some places offer local cuisine. A lot of times they will have various restaurants: a buffet, an Italian place, a seafood place, etc. But they always seem to cut corners to me, even if you're trying Jamaican food, it's probably not great Jamaican food. I definitely have a lot of friends who prefer to stay all-inclusive or get a condo and cook their own meals, for various reasons, I guess TETO, I'm just one of those people that really like to eat!
Yeah, whenever I see advertisements for mini/full kitchens in hotel rooms I think why would I want to cook/do dishes on vacation? Not happening.
I would probably do it now, but when I didn't have dietary restrictions I can't see doing this at all, and I love cooking. But when I'm on vacation, I'm going to let someone else do that for me.
cagoldi the all inclusive I went to was pretty small (it was in puerto Vallarta). They had an open air restaurant that was buffet style. They did a variety of things including fish, fruits, veg, etc. Then they had a grill at the bar in the middle of the pool. It had things like hamburgers and fries but also ceviche. The last restaurant was a "fine dining" restaurant that had a different cuisine every night. The night we went to it they had Italian. I preferred to just stay at the resort personally, because the taxis scared me so we didn't venture out much.
I love the mini kitchen while traveling, esp with kids. DNW to get up and go to breakfast first thing when could pour cereal and lay on couch.
That's what room service is for
I'm so cheap. My sister and I were laughing that we barely wanted to order room service while in a hotel the weekend my mom fell. We shared an omelette. I would much rather spend money going out for happy hour than breakfast.
I never travel without food. Must have access to food. So I always at least have some granola bars and fruit strips on hand to tide the beasts (and myself) over.
Me too. But I still need to go out for a good meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I may be very into food.

This is me. I'll splurge and get what I want on vacation, but I'd prefer not to order room service much for my kids unless they have a request cause they probably won't eat it.
I love a mini kitchen. I go out for meals but I'm all about having booze, la croix, cheese, dips, some frozen apps, ect in the room. A lot of times we will be out all day and have a late lunch/early dinner and just want heavy snacks in the evening.

Omg my kid loves room service. And I'm well aware I'm coming at that from a place of privilege because room service is expensive AF. But my kid will specifically request a room service dinner or breakfast and he gets so excited to hang out in our room and eat.

I'm the same as your boy. the first thing I do when I get to the room is scope the room service menu. Dh doesn't get the appeal but I love it!
Omg, you guys would be a match made in heaven. He loves me reading him the room service menu. And then MH is always like, "how much for pancakes?!"
All Inclusives get bonus points for convenience for sure. If I'm going to Mexico for 2-3 days I love an all inclusive.
Also in certain parts (Cancun) that's basically the only option - plus the safest
We went to Cancun right before I had C and we didn't stay at an all-inclusive. No joke, I had some of the best food of my life at some of the restaurants there. One place was burritos on a stand on the side of the road, another place was a fancy French place that a food critic from The NY Times was eating at when we were there. You need to research it out, but there are some crazy good restaurants there. And Senor Frogs. There's also a Senor Frogs.
Isn't that when people are obsessed with eating healthy at all times? It sounds miserable.
Yep.
Some vegans get accused of this and honestly? I think it's true for some, but they are a minority.
She is my friend from junior high and she decided to go vegan a few months after me, but she is vegan, not plant-based, meaning she's in it for ethical reasons.
If she did it and went really hard at the "this is sooooo much healthier" angle I would be concerned for her.
She already ate very clean so the only things she had to cut were eggs and fish.

I've stayed at non AIs there and there is definitely good food - but after dark it's just safer to be either sober or at the resort. And I'm never sober there, so...
Plus it's like 2hrs direct from here so it's always a weekend getaway spot.
For some reason if I'm staying somewhere longer I rule out Cancun. I guess because I feel like I can go there anytime?
Really? I didn't realize it was unsafe. I just assumed since it was a built up tourist area.... Good to know.
Yes! It's a quick direct flight for us too. It's a great location for a long weekend.

If it's you and your H sticking to cabs you'll be fine.
But on a drunk girls weekend it's better to just stay at the hotel.
Last time I went with H we went into town some.
But when it's just my mom (or girlfriends) and me we stick to the hotel.
I always leave my ring/watch at home.
My H's friend was almost kidnapped for his Rolex. They are just looking for easy targets and he acted like he had a gun so they left him.
Good to know. And how scary!! We went out lots there but we definitely stuck to tourist areas and were careful about what jewelry we bring on vacation.
