There's one restaurant in her town. There is no Red Robin. There's no Chili's. The closest thing to civilization is 20 minutes away. It's about time, for one thing. The McDonald's lets her only work nights. There's no guarantee she can work that out at an actual restaurant, even if there was one. Trust me, she's tried everything and considered everything. We talk about this at least a couple times a month.
Yeah, I was going to say... in the town I grew up in, there isn't even a McDonald's. If she lives in as rural of a place as that, the closest restaurant that you would do pretty well tip wise would be at least 40 minutes away.
But that's what I'm wondering about. Some tips are better than no tips right? Or does she get benefits through McDonald's? That would definitely make a difference
Edit
I didn't see WWF response initially just heartwoods. I get it. she's doin the best she can!
I think it comes down to very different opinions depending on how you look at things. My life experiences have been very different and because of that I think my outlook is very different than most.
I guess I don't think that raising min wage is the answer, there is a much bigger picture to look at; but I in no way judge the person who is working in fast food to support their family. you have to do what you have to do. Our system is messed up and far from perfect and needs fixing.
There is a problem. Our system is broken. Raising minimum wage is not a magic wand. Let's look at affordable schooling and programs to help people achieve what they want. Let's look at that instead. Let's look at the whole picture, because just doing ONE thing here or there isn't going to work. It's all a mess. All of it.

There's just nowhere for her to get tips. There aren't any restaurants close by. She does not get benefits.
Sorry to get all crazy. I just hate the position we're in, and get frustrated when people say, "well I worked my ass off"... So are you saying we don't? Anyways, that's all I've got on this subject before my head pops, haha
I don't think anyone was saying that you don't work your ass off. On the same token I don't want people to think I am looking down on anyone in any way because they are struggling. I would never do that because I have been in that position. It took years and years of working that hard to be in a comfortable spot. it doesn't happen over night, and I by no means try to discount what anyone else has to go through or do on a day to day basis

I get it, boo! Sorry, I didn't see you responded and was just quoting heartwoods post. That's what I get for reading backwards.

Our financial situation is really similar. I was going to be a model for a dental assistant school's board exams just for the couple hundred bucks they pay.
Oh I forgot I wanted to look into that! But I agree that our situation is similar. Poor people fist bump. Ha!

Well, in the town I'm from, we have like one diner and a shit ton of ho-dunk, small town bars. So, I would think if there were a McD's there, you might be better off because your wage would be guaranteed and you wouldn't be hoping for tips, you know? Like, tips aren't guaranteed and your wage at McD's is.
I'm not being critical because her situation is damn hard. But, now that she has some food industry experience, why not apply for jobs at a restaurant? Even if she starts at a crappy restaurant like Red Robin she'd make more than at McDonald's. My friend does CNA stuff too and works at Lucky Strike on the weekends as a server. Guess how much she makes on the weekends in tips?
A lot. Like, a lot a lot.

I'm like NOT making light of ANYTHING, but the way I read this, I read it like "GUYS. THEREN'T NO CHILI'S THERE."

Hahah. Exactly. We will make a come-up one day, friend.
Restaurant's have it good in Cali. $8.25 minimum wage (although I think it was raised to $10? Besides la who is now $15) PLUS tips. You can't make below minimum wage here just because you're a server. I bartended for awhile. I absolutely hated it.
I'm hijacking this to ask Crawford, since you mentioned ASL. APurp is a dud. I realized she probably isn't watching the DVD and we aren't using it enough. Well, MIL refuses to do it. So, 3x a week, she will get next to NO ASL. How much do you need to work with these babies to get them to where they need to go? Like, I guess my overall thing is, should I just abandon it? Because, like, for example, my kid might not pottytrain if for 3x out of a week she doesn't have to bother.
Honestly? I don't think it will hurt to keep doing it at all. But I would think if by 9 or 10 months, she doesn't recognize signs, she may not get it before she gets spoken words. I also don't think there is a right answer to this question. It won't hurt her to never learn signs. I think it's honestly more helpful for parents.
I'd think the big thing to help APurp get asl is to do it at home on top of the dvds. I've been signing milk to R for about a month and a half now. Every time we say it, we sign it and he will copy me sometimes.

I really enjoyed waitressing when I was in college. It was like an instant gratification to see if how nice I was correlated to my tip. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn't, and some people were just assholes. Like the lady that already paid for her tab, tipped me shitty, so her son gave me a little more, then wanted to order another beer and told me to take the money I got for a tip to pay for the beer.
I think my 2 cents here is that no, raising the minimum wage is not a silver bullet. But a larger/better solution is going to take time. And people cannot survive on minimum wage, even though in many situations they are forced to. Hell, DH and I both have what would be considered "well-paying jobs," but between loans and cost of living in this godforsaken city WE are struggling to make ends meet. The other day we were actually talking about how we don't know how others who are less fortunate can even manage it.
So either we need a bandaid like raising minimum wage or a congress that is capable of making a fucking decision on anything ever. And we all know how likely that is..
And also I really like this month's siggy challenge and am super bummed I'm just noticing it now.
I think previous posters have covered off my thoughts. I'll add only one thing: the hardest job I've ever had was waitressing. And I've worked HARD the past 7 years in my chosen career. But waitressing was way more stressful.

Ugh the worst! I had a lady try and jump over the bar to take her tips out of my tip bucket. I can't handle all that on the day to day. I would cry before work sometimes because I couldn't stand the drunk assholes.

Yeah, I didn't have to deal with drunk people. And luckily in that situation, I had an awesome manager that just paid for the lady's beer and let me keep my 10% tip.

I think it's malcolm gladwell who always writes in his books, not only do you need hard work, you need a bit of luck, and awesome timing. Hard work isn't always enough. Sometimes it's more about the luck and timing than it is the work.

And they should not have to "figure out" how to put food on their table because the rest of us feel it is unfair they get paid enough to afford COL...
That is my issue with this whole UO, why is it ok to say I do not want food service workers to have a higher minimum wage because I have a better job, education etc.
Since when that became the reason for us to throw away basic human decency? I tried to keep it inside but I absolutely hate when people utilize their own life experience to justify why they feel others should also struggle through life.
I work in the hospitality industry in the higher end of the spectrum and I can tell you the housekeepers and stewards work two, three jobs just to make it, and they are some of the hardest working people I know.

I used to consult to a hedge fund manager, easily worth $500 million, and he paid his housekeepers and butlers $65 - 80k/year, plus health benefits, because, as an economist, he went through the exercise of what they bring to his life, etc.... When I learned how much he paid them I almost fainted, but at the end of the day he will cut a bitch if he sees a speck of dust, so making sure there's none in his home is worth a great deal to him.

I partially agree with this, yes the system is broken. But the original statements in this argument was not: let us not raise min wage because the system is broken and we should look at alternatives. It was let us not raise min wage because these are unskilled jobs and they do should not get paid more. Two different reasonings.
I don't utilize my life experience to justify others struggling. I don't think anyone should struggle or deserves to struggle. I just think that we all take our life experience and it affects our thinking.
I don't really have a yes/no thought on raising minimum wage. But I do see that I have made it to where I am because of my hard work and I am proud of that. Do I think others can do that and choose not to? Yes. Do I think others bust their ass and are just unable to, no matter how hard they try? Yes. I don't know. I think life is just unfair and it sucks.

Your getting this twisted. We (most of us) are saying that raising the minimum wage is not the answer because it does nothing to fix the problem. Maybe temporarily, long term it does nothing to solve the problem/bigger issues.
I consider myself to be an overly compassionate person and in no way am I throwing away human decency. I am not using my experience to justify anything other than to say that I can sympathize with what it is like to struggle. I think your reading way to much into and taking it to a place it wasn't intended to go.

I love celery and Pb. I'm going to go eat some right now, and not throw the celery away. That would be wasteful. I think things got weirdly twisted from the OPs, but I will toss in that raising the minimum wage without adjusting middle-income jobs unfairly screws people who worked hard, through experience and education, to get there. An example of wage gap: my mom is a registered nurse. She has been a nurse for 33 years. She started at $5.15/hour in 1982. My dad was a teacher and then a postal carrier. We often struggled to keep food on the table. Nurses starting now earn around $30/hour. My mom has 33 years of experience, is a director at a huge hospital network, has a masters degree, and makes about $36/hour. That's damn good money, but it doesn't reward her comparably to a nurse with NO experience. The CEO of her hospital makes $7 million a year. She is 3 levels below him in rank. I'm not saying the nurse starting out shouldn't make $30/hour, but I definitely think there should be some ratio less insane than making 17% more with her experience and education, especially when other roles in the business are paid in the millions.
