Baby Names.....my husband surprised me with his idea.

My husband is VERY traditional.  With our first baby (a little girl) we had a hard time agreeing on baby names.  We had 3 names picked out when I went into labour and in the end he let me decide the name even though my choice was #2 on his list....I think he figured after all that work I deserved getting the final say.  With this pregnancy he's come out of his shell, he actually said, I think if we have a boy, I'd like to name him Rayne after my dad (whose name is Randy Wayne).  I was so shocked because with our first he was adamant that if we had a boy it would be Randy, William, or Grant.  (all family names).  I know it's still super early to talk names but has anybody else's husbands surprised them when it came down to deciding names?

My husband asked me when we found out we were pregnant the first time around, which ended in loss, if we could name a boy after his dad, Ellis. My husband is not a sentimental man. I LOVE the idea of naming our son after his dad... I never met my FIL, he passed away many years ago, but I feel quite a bond to him through MH's stories. He's had one idea for a girl's name other than the one we decided on last year, which I like and would go well with the name we chose if we were ever to give a little girl a sister.

MH surprised me before I was even KU. He said "You know, if we have another boy, I'd love to name him after your dad" I cried. So, if this is a boy, which I have a feeling it is, he will be named after my dad I love it.

We could not decide on a girls name last time...even after finding out DD was a girl. We spent more time at the birth center deciding on a name than having a baby. DD was born at 6:45, at 9:00 I said we should probably call our parents and we should probably have a name. I'd like to say that we will have our act together this time, but probably not. It took me 3 visits to the store looking at the same sofa to decide that I liked it. #decisionsarehard

Yep. Mine. If it's a boy we are going with Beaux. He wants it as a tribute to my Louisiana heritage. To be honest, Beaux is actually spelled correctly (it's just the plural masculine form) but to people who don't speak French or have a cajun heritage I think it's going to come off very weird. I love the name Beau but he will not budge on the spelling. I think people might find it trashy, like a made up spelling, if they are not familiar with the cultural reference. He will not budge though.

He gave on my girl name when I changed the proposed spelling to the French version too so I'm beginning to think he just has a thing for French names. Men are weird about names. We talked forever about name and our list literally is comprised of 1 male name and 2 female names. Mainly because he just doesn't like anything I like and vice versa.

IDK, what do you guys think about the name Beaux? You know I can handle the flames.

When we were thinking about boy names for our son, my husband joking suggested Thunder, which I, of course, immediately shot down. But, because I'd nixed it so vehemently, my husband continued to bring it up, and it seemed less like a joke every time. Drove me crazy!

We settled on something else. I just couldn't saddle a kid with that kind of name without knowing his personality. If he was a really timid, reserved kid, having the name Thunder would just be cruel. Of course, with my son's personality, he'd be a perfect Thunder. But we didn't know that at the time!!! Almost regret not using it as a middle name.

I'd go with Beau, just to save your maybe-son a lifetime of constant spelling corrections.  I am all for names that can be easily spelled.

And why would the plural form make sense as a name?  I mean . . . it's one kid.

abvintage I like the name! I do prefer the Beau spelling though. I think the x makes it plural which seems kind of strange for a baby name, just because names are singular.

I agree with aelias , abvintage -- I love the spelling Beaux and I think it is absolutely adorable YH wants to honor your heritage. But I think if you are not in that area anymore and it is not as common where you are now, it could be tough times for little Beaux. You still have some time, maybe you can revisit it after awhile and he will be more open to discussion!

Love the name!  I actually had that name on my shortlist for boys until my husband told me they had a dog named Bo (short for Bo-bo) growing up.  Different spelling, same name, so it kinda wrecked it.  I say do it gal!

I have to say I think I like Beaux more than Beau. I know that they are both masculine grammatically but I feel like Beaux looks a little more masculine. I don't know why...

We agreed right a way on our daughters name before even know sex. We couldn't for the life of us agree on a boys name. I think I said yes to Maddox and Keenan just to shut him up plus I was convinced it was a girl (I was right). Now this time around we are hoping for a boy and he has gone back to those 2 names, which I am still not thrilled about. AT ALL. And he doesn't like names that I have come up with, although I got a sort of that's nice regarding Avery which can work for both girl or boy. But then I have to decide if I want to do the "A" theme, as our daughter is Adelyn. I am glad we have 7 more months to figure this out.

abvintage - don't mean to sound stupid but pronouncing Beaux sounds like bow, correct? Assuming so, I think it's a strong name for a boy. I don't think it's silly spelling it with the "X" as that's part of your heritage / cultural. And besides, who cares what other people think? I think it's great to have a unique spelling of a name (but this is coming from a girl with the most common name EVER growing up. Starting with the name Sara...)

We won't even think about discussing names until we know the sex. With DD we got into so many arguments about boy names in the first tri that we had to put it on hold until we found out it was a girl. And thank goodness because his boy names were ridiculous. So ridiculous that I would laugh at him when he would suggest them, because he couldn't possibly be serious, then he would get upset because he was actually serious. Should be some interesting discussions if this baby is a boy

I was a little surprised that my husband agreed to my girl name because it's pretty unusual for a girl (especially around here). For some reason he is a lot more open-minded with girl names. For boy names he only likes classic/traditional ones and he basically can't have ever known anyone with that name or he automatically associates it lol. Also, he insists on the full version of names (i.e. Samuel instead of just Sam) - but I'm okay with that because it gives the kids more options.

I like Beaux but wouldn't go with that spelling just because people would always be spelling/pronouncing it wrong and that would be annoying.

DH and I originally disagreed a lot when we first discussed names. He's from England and I'm from Canada, and certain name connotations are culturally very different. He's quite into semi-old fashioned names, and most of my favourites he vetoed immediately. I thought it'd be a nightmare agreeing on something with him, but when I had my heart set on our current choices, he went for them immediately. Relief.

quietdownfish -- lucky girl! That's really sweet. I would love to name a boy baby after my dad, even if just for a middle name. DH hates the name though. And it's such a normal name, it's Michael! My husband the weirdo.

abvintage -- my nephew is Bowyn (god I love Welsh names), and he goes by "Bo" for short. Obviously that's completely different, but I do really like the sound of it. It's just whether or not you have an issue with people spelling and pronouncing it, if that even bothers you. I personally think that the spelling of "Beaux" looks really feminine... not that that matters, though!

For the longest time, my DH insisted on the name "Moses Joseph" for a boy, as in - ahem - "MoJo" for short. This is where I got to use my veto card.

abvintage - I agree with the PPs that prefer the Beau spelling, but think it's sweet your DH wants to honor your heritage like that. I guess I'm a bit stuck on the plural issue as well.

Beauregard, nn Beau is one of our top boy name contenders, so I'm partial to that spelling. I'm just not a huge fan of X's aesthetically.

Our big go 'round will be on the boy's name. It's tradition in H's family that the eldest boy of the line has a name starting with B. So H has one (that I like), but I really dislike most boy B names. Really dislike. So we're between Beauregard and Benedict (nn Ned).

We've been pretty set on a girl name (Catherine Claudia), but now I'm not as sure about the first name, so we may go back to the drawing board before releasing the name. H and I have pretty similar styles, so I think it's not going to be a fight so much as a narrowing down.

H's huge favorite girl name is Persephone. Persephone Jane. He looooooves it. I like it as well, but I'm not sure about doing it for the first kid. My huge GP boy name is Hamish, it's so cute. We'll likely never use that.

I would immediately think you were from South Louisiana with that name.  I think it is OK but NMS.

abvintage, my nephew is Beau, I love his name (and prefer this spelling). On a random note: SIL's boyfriend is an avid hunter, they both loved Beau as a name, but SIL had to fight for it NOT to be spelled "Bow." Her bf thought it would be like "bow and arrow." Yeah, he's klassy. No spelling is as bad as that for a little boy! I think either spelling is fine. I do think Beau seems more "correct," and the x does make the name a bit more feminine to me. It's a great name either way!

I think the cultural background to the name is great, and I like it! People are going to think what they think. My brother's name is Sasha, and lots of people said it was a girls name. It's not actually, and anyone who had Russian background knew it. Sasha is a version of Alexander, and it's in masculine form. Sacha is the feminine. If people want to comment, give them a cultural lesson!

I like the spelling of Beaux and I think it's great that your DH wants to honor your heritage.  I say if you like it then go for it but if you have any hesitation then scrap it.  If you are going to go against the grain (even a little bit), you are just going to have to own it and it hell what people think.   People have loose lips and will be more than happy to tell you what they think of anything nontraditional. 

We've picked out names for both sexes before I got pregnant.  I'm solid with our girl name but I'm starting to question our boy name.

I like the name with either spelling:) I have a very unique (not you-neek) name IRL, and I love it, so I'm partial to using the x with Beaux since that makes it more unique, even though that would technically mean more than one guy:)

I love Beau but really not a fan of the extra x.  Non-traditional spellings are NMS but it's not egregious enough to change the name completely.  He will likely just have lots of misspellings in his life.

I like Beau/Beaux ether way but agree with PP that he will constantly be correcting people on the spelling.
I do think if the main reason is to honor your heritage that Beaux is the way to go. Who cares if people side eye you, it could be A LOT worse!!
My son goes by Grady but his full name is Gradyn. My reason for spelling it that way is because he would learn to spell Grady and then be completely confused when he has to switch letters all around and add an "e".

DH & I have agreed on the boy's name for completely different reasons. He is a welder and loves the name Lincoln (bc it's a welding brand). I have a thing for president names so it was already on my list. I love that he is enthusiastic about t but I am also kinda hesitant bc I know it is quickly becoming a popular name. Gradyn is 5 so he was ahead of the "Brayden, Aiden, Kayden trend."

He says I can pick the girls name but I know he will be very vocal about his opinions anyway! I will wait to get serious about it until after we know the sex so I don't fall in love with a name and then not get to use it!

I like the name Beaux. My name is something that can be spelled differently and it can be pronounced differently too. I do have to correct people sometimes. That doesn't annoy me. What did annoy me was not being able to find my name on anything as a kid.

Ooooh, I love your taste in names!  Benedict called Ned, be still my heart!  But all the others are great too.

I would also say that Beau is my preferred spelling but I would not look sideways at Beaux since I know it is also used in some places.

Personally, we won't be talking about names until we know sex and will likely be going for another family name.

We already have our names picked. If it's a girl, we are going with Emma (for DH's grandma) Lynn (my middle name) and for a boy we both like the name Logan. No ties, just like the name. We will use either Thomas, James or Vincent for the Middle name - all family names.

I also like the spelling Beaux, abvintage, but Beau would probably be easier for people

abvintage forgot to give you feedback. I like Beaux or Beau. My opinion is don't do something just to please the masses, do what you like best. I think it is neat that you have the cultural aspect, it is a nice story.
