PR - refusing Vit. K shot at birth

Three of my aunts, my SIL, my BIL, and at least 1 cousin are all nurses. Reading about these ridiculous anti-vax nurses, I am beyond relieved that they're rational and are all aboard the vaccination train.

I had a friend tell me this week that she didn't vaccinate her kids because she didn't want them to have the gardisil. (her kids are both under 5 btw). She proceeded to say she wasn't against all, but you can't have only some on your record for school and claim an exemption. Then she went on to talk about how some vaccines are made from aborted fetuses.

A quick google search tells me that cells were used from fetuses from the 1960s. I do not have all of the info, most of these claims come from "pro life" websites.

She's anti gardisil because she thinks it's too new and could have some impact on her daughters reproductive organs....

This is one argument I can never fathom. My beliefs run pretty conservative when it comes to abortion but... what's the argument here? Those cell lines came from aborted fetuses and HOW DARE THEY contribute to medical advances that will save thousands if not millions of lives, they should have just been disposed of as usual??? It's not like the abortions took place for the purpose of vaccine making...

This is hard for me to read. I had HPV and had to have multiple leaps from abnormal precancerous cells to the point where if I had to have another one my OB said I wouldn't be able to carry a child. it made me feel relief that my daughter can get this vaccine some day to possibly avoid what I went through.

I googled. It is required in RI and Virginia. But in Virginia you can elect not to get it if you read their brochure. So, unless she lives in RI, she's endangering her kids for nothing. Whee!

Similar shit here, culminating in me learning about the "Tumor Board" at my hospital when they weren't sure how successful my surgery was and being very, very grateful that I didn't have complications with my pregnancy. The "extensive" procedure I had that seems to have gotten enough of the bad biz out of me (fingers still and always crossed after every biopsy) sure as FUCK had an impact on my reproductive organs. Especially when one of my second opinion docs recommended a hysterectomy, just to be safe because of the kinds of cells involved. That would have been a pretty serious impact too.

pbjam, your friend can suck my apparently "meaty" cervix, which gave no fucks about being ravaged by a disease I was just a little too old to be immunized against. Thank my lucky, lucky stars.

(Obviously no offense meant to you, just your ignorant-ass friend who pushed my buttons with her irrational misunderstanding of the real fucking situation she is putting her daughter in.)

That's probably the worst part about not doing the HPV one. Isn't it only really effective if you get it before a certain age? So if these kids aren't allowed to get it because of their parents, even if they decide to vaccinate later in life when they are in charge of their own health, it may be too late to even get that one at that point.

Even if there was some reason to believe the line that vaccines *cause* autism, it is absolutely STUNNING to me that people who choose not to vax for this reason would rather take the chance of their child dying from a fully preventable disease than be on the spectrum.

This is the part that pisses me off so much. Do you research people! And, I mean, actual research. Stop going to websites that support your beliefs. Instead, read a few peer reviewed, scholarly journals and then make your decisions (if you don't "trust your dr").

I have a friend who kept saying "I don't know, vaccines just scare me." Yet, she had no actual reasoning and is vaccinated herself. I think she refused thr flu shot while pregnant and was a little slow to start her baby's vaccines and now she's fully on board. Thank God because we are good friends. But, her ignorance in the subject was astounding. Stop saying you are "scared" and educate yourself.

This really surprises me. I live in a fairly crunchy community and even they push for Vit K shots at birth. Even the ones who opt out choose an oral dose (home birthies).

My OB made sure to mention that the vit. K shot was required by state law when he was explaining it to me. I think by explaining it that way, fewer people would try opting out. My state also makes opting out a little more difficult by requiring a notary on a birth plan.

I'm late so sorry if this has been said, but they do it (at least at my hospital) immediately after birth. I had a CS and while they stitched me up they took him and MH for that stuff, then brought him to me in recovery.

I had a homebirth and it was part of the kit we were given. The midwife administered it while I was nursing shortly after the birth.

The nurse who gave the hospital tour before I had DD told our group that parents were allowed to decline the Vitamin K shot, but if they did, the staff would make a call to CPS. I'm not sure how true that is or if it was just a threat, but I'm glad they were taking a strong stance to show parents how seriously they take it.

My anti-vax cousin bases all of her beliefs on completely biased "research". She basically pulled a "la la la I can't hear you" when my brother tried to quote WHO and CDC data at her once.

Now I'm curious about her stance on the vitamin K shot. Probably a big nope.
