Someone once explained that they need to do what is best for their baby and not the world. And what's best for their baby is to not vax.
Yeah if you're a monster was all I could think.
I bet these people 'don't get the big deal about secondhand smoke' too
My FIL legitimately believes second hand smoke is a conspiracy and not a real health hazard. It took every ounce of my being not to explode when he told me that.
I just found out that some people we know don't vaccinate.
How did we find out?
We were at their house for a birthday party and a couple days later we get a call letting us know that 2 of their kids have whooping cough. Since we were in the same room as them for more than an hour, our pediatrician and our PCP for me & MW treated us with abx.
Anyways...we found out they don't vaccinate because the dad was ranting on FB about how it is unsafe to vaccinate. And how people should do their research and he was posting articles from 1994. While his kids have the whooping cough. When he had to shake his 2.5 year old daughter the night before to breathe because she wasn't breathing. Because of the whooping cough. That could have been prevented. But his priority was ranting about how vaccinations are bad. LOLOK.
I've actually made it standard practice to ask about vaccination status, my husband cringes.
This is what I have been wondering now.
Do we need to make it standard practice to ask people?
My DD is only 14 months, and not in DC, so I have no idea of what the local lows/practices are for requiring immunizations. If I researched what our local school district requires, perhaps I could put my mind at ease some?
But no research would have prevented this...they homeschool, so yeah.
I just ask up front to neighbors and people that are new in our life. It typically goes along with, do you have guns in your house for me. I've never had someone be offended.
I take the approach of, just like your child's health and safety is your first priority it is also mine for my child, so it is important to make sure you know my child has all their vaccines and we have no guns in our house. People will normally respond with oh we lock up our guns, or we are delaying vaccines, or the best response is (for me at least) our kids are also UTD on vaccines and we don't have guns either.
When my neighbors moved in in Seattle, it was the first thing I asked her. She said that unfortunately her kids were not vaccinated, I said then unfortunately our kids couldn't have play dates (they were the same age as my daughter). The mom and I built a friendship and within a couple months her kids were getting caught up on their vaccines, this mom legit told me that she was afraid of autism because of Jenny McCarthy and she came from an area in California where again the majority didn't vaccinate so she went along with it. This was one of my prouder moments on my vaccination crusade. Some people just need more info, vaccines for the win.
As for schools most schools "require" vaccination however most states have a religious and personal exemption. More and more states are trying to remove the personal exemption because it really is just BS, it's like saying I just don't wanna, which when talking about public health is not good enough. California recently passed a bill to remove the personal exemption and I couldn't be happier. Private schools generally don't require vaccination but encourage it. I have never had an issue getting a schools vaccination rate when I ask, they can't tell you who; but they can tell you how many students aren't vaccinated and if it's because of medical necessity.
ETA: there is also always exemption allowed for medical necessity, I just wanted to add that in case it wasn't clear what types of exemptions schools allow

I realized I was unsure of my state's vaccination requirements. I should have known. They allow religious exemptions. Parents only have to check a fucking box and they're exempt. What the hell, TN? As if things around here weren't fucked up enough.
I had someone in that homesteading FB group try to shame me for judging other people for not vaxxing. LMAO.
I openly judge someone that makes an uninformed decision about not only their kids' health, but general society's health as well. No shame in my game.
Please shame them, I don't like mom-shaming in general, but if you don't vaccinate I am going to tell you that you are stupid, every time.
It's just really an irresponsible decision and you want to yell at all these people; all your friends who also don't vaccinate are why YOU NEED to vaccinate. The chances of your kid getting measles is exponentially higher because no one you hang around is vaccinated. Get it together people.
Or make a choice, you don't vaccinate you don't get access to modern medicine period. Don't go to the pediatrician for antibiotics when your kid is sick, just ride it out. You want to live all natural, then do it 100%
(ETA- I realize that's ridiculous the last statement and I would never want a child to suffer because their parent made a decision I don't agree with but I'm just saying I don't get the differentiation these parents make between certain aspects of medicine and others)
Oh and I'm equally not fond of delaying vaccinations, but I won't shame so much as ask why about 1 million times. The CDC schedule is tested and approved, by thousands of people way smarter than I am, who am I to argue or change it?!
Holy shit. I live in Seattle and had no idea the vaccination rate was so low. I say "yes, please" to all the vaccinations l.
When I was looking for daycares it took me months to find one that had over 75% compliance on vaccines...I was in shock. I recently moved to the Midwest, and I couldn't find one that had less than 95% vaccine compliance. Damn Hippies in the PNW

Ugh. Missouri allows religious and medical exemptions too.
I asked at Lexi's daycare. They said they are required there, and we were required to show her immunization record. I seriously pisses me off that some people are so stupid as to not vaccinate their children.
There's a kid at school who isn't vaccinated (her mom proudly told us while we were all waiting at pick up) but they also don't bother with car seats for their 4 yo. So.
Omg Kristykristyleelee I would've been furious and it makes me so sad and angry for those poor kids!! How is that better than getting a shot to prevent it!!

What the actual fuck. Ok but the car seat thing is a law? I hope a cop pulls them over. Because what the fuck to putting your kids life in danger?
So I just looked up my states vaccination information.
In NJ, we have religious and medical exemption. For the religious exemption, the parent just needs to submit something written referencing their religious exemption. It is noted that no one may question whether it is reasonable or acceptable.
Yup. I'm in NJ too. This infuriates me. I've seen people use the religious exemption who are not religious at all. They basically just have to say "for religious reasons" and that's it.

Just throwing caution to the wind in all aspects of their life. At least they are consistent?
Except, not consistent. First three kids vaccinated, second two not. Social experiment?

There is a national seat belt line where you can call and report people for not having their children in the appropriate car seats
I take that back, that may just be the AZ one from when I lived there. It looks like individual states have their own numbers?

I wonder which kids will feel more loved.
I mean if one of the vaxxed kids hears mom talking to a friend saying "omg vaccinations are the devil!" That kid is going think mom hates them.
On the other hand they may be like "oh yeah, well at least mom had me vaccinated, she wants you to get measles!!" When fighting with their non-vaxxed sibling.
A few of my cousins are anti vaxers. I had to block them on fb due to all their bs propaganda. One of them before our family reunion sent out a letter on her middle son having a spectrum disorder, but was adamant that he is not on the spectrum. It pretty much told us how to approach her child. She says she is anti vax due to religion, doesn't want her kid to have autism, oh and to top it off her H is a chiropractor and they know all about medicine & vaccines. I called her out going oh so I guess your anti vaxing didn't prevent your kid from being on the spectrum. Her response well if he was vaxxed he would have full blown autism. I just think it's funny how the lines bend for them to defend it. They never go to doctors because big pharma and the government are controlling them. One of their kids broke their arm and they had no issue getting an X-ray and having the kids arm reset.
I looked up the vaccine stats at schools in my area. There is a Waldorf school near me that has a 40% unvaxxed rate. My next door neighbor's kids go there.
This makes me sick to my stomach. When DD was a newborn we had so many measles outbreaks in our area of California. It was so scary. I'm assuming this is why California recently pushed for the religious exception to be abolished

Omg yes, this. There was someone in that FB group in medical school to become an infectious disease doc saying she thinks delayed vaccinations are better. Because it is "too much for their little bodies."
According to whom?? The CDC has that schedule for a reason!!! It pissed me off that a doctor was saying that. What the fucking fuck.
And of course there were a million anecdotes about people that said their doc recommended delayed vaccines because their kids had reactions or there was family history. OBVIOUSLY I AM NOT TLAKING ABOUT LEGITIMATE MEDICAL ISSUES.
Sorry for shouting.
Yeah she is a terrible doctor and must be going to a terrible medical school (<-- I can't really back that up, but delaying vaccines, like Dr. Sears method is stupid, and there is a reason every year there is a call for Dr. Sears to no longer be in good standing with the AAP). Send her this next time...
"each infant would have the theoretical capacity to respond to about 10 000 vaccines at any one time" that is lovingly from the AAP (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/109/1/124)

I have more to say, this person who wants to go into ID should know exactly why early immunization is important for newborns. This is making me ragey.
Secondly, reactions, family history, every time someone says they had a vaccine reaction, I ask what and if their doctor reported it to VAERS, most people say they got a fever, which I just want to scream, IS NOT A REASON to delay vax. My second kid spiked 106 degree fever for 3 days, 11 days after her MMR, we ended up having to take her to UC Bc we sat on it, she had a bilateral ear infection, but the dr insisted it was likely from her MMR (this again was in Seattle) um yeah no, it's likely from the raging infection in her ears, if there wasn't a different source, maybe, and this is yet another reason why people are fearful of vaccines. PS I'll take 106 fever for 100 days over encephalitis from measles
Oh oh and I didn't even tell you guys, one of the women who was actually pro vax on that site brought up how there shouldn't be nut free schools. Because we are teaching kids to be privileged.
I could not.
I got into this same argument with a woman from my mom's group. Her argument was that her son's allergy to mold was just as important as someone's peanut allergy and that she didn't see the school doing anything about that. She didn't like when I replied that is my school had enough mold to trigger my child that there might be a bigger problem.
She said kids need to learn accountability. "How is school any different than work/the park? If the whole school caters to them, how will they learn to live in the real world?"
Oh. Because a 5 year old in kindergarten is clearly the same as a grown ass, adult who knows better.
I mean it comes down to a matter of life and fucking death. This isn't the time to "teach a lesson" when the consequence is death.
So I just looked up my states vaccination information.

Same. Which is why Reese's medical plan states that every student must be vaccinated because she isn't.
