One of my closest friends has a very crunchy, anti vax sister who was recently going through nursing school. When she refused to get vaccinated they wouldn't let her continue the program until she was vaccinated. She eventually caved, thank God. I just don't understand this.
Jesus Christ. Did she not understand that she would be putting herself and her patients at risk working unvaccinated as a nurse? I just don't understand that level of ignorance. I really don't.
My friends sister is like this too (but not a nurse). My friend defended her and was like "well it's her choice as a parent" as if it was the same as deciding when to start cereal. Fuck no, I told her that her sister is an asshole and that she was stupid for bringing her newborn around her 3 unvaccinated nieces. We're not friends anymore.
This girl is a grade A moron. She makes me lose a lot of faith in humanity every time I have to be around her.

My favorite part of the big pharma doctors making millions giving vaccines etc argument that the anti vax crowd spews, is that most of them are into "essential" oils. They're literally making some random person millions of dollars rubbing lavender on their wrists to give them "serenity" or whatever the hell. But right, doctors and scientists are totally the ones pulling the wool over our eyes.
That's probably the worst part about not doing the HPV one. Isn't it only really effective if you get it before a certain age? So if these kids aren't allowed to get it because of their parents, even if they decide to vaccinate later in life when they are in charge of their own health, it may be too late to even get that one at that point.
You need to get it before you are sexually active.
It could still be effective and is recommended up to age 26, even if a woman has been sexually active. But, much better odds of protection when given at age 11/12.

I'm just over here like please give my kids all the vaccines for preventable illness. Kthxbye. 💁🏻
Girl, yes.
My sister read an article today that 145 kids in a school district here (Folsom, I believe) were sent home on the first day for not providing their vaccination records as required.
I did a happy dance. I'm so glad they are enforcing this.
We were reminded at kindergarten orientation that kids had to be up to date on all shots before the first day of school. I'm hoping our district is strict about it.
The nurse who gave the hospital tour before I had DD told our group that parents were allowed to decline the Vitamin K shot, but if they did, the staff would make a call to CPS. I'm not sure how true that is or if it was just a threat, but I'm glad they were taking a strong stance to show parents how seriously they take it.
The hospital I had DS in totally does. In that state it's considered child endangerment and is a misdemeanor. They call CPS and they take the baby right from the hospital if you decline vitamin k and the eye ointment.
What? I'm 100% vax but that sounds hard to believe for eye ointment and a vitamin k shot. May I ask what state? And do they take children in that state where parents refuse to vax?
@veritas, It was Texas. I stand corrected. Its just for the eye ointment. Not the vitamin K shot. Apologies.
Texas State Rule 97.136 Prophylaxis against Ophthalmia Neonatorum (a) A physician, nurse or midwife or other person in attendance at a childbirth shall apply or cause to be applied, to the child's eyes a 0.5% ointment in each eye within two hours after birth. If this ointment is not available due to the disruption in the distribution or manufacturing, a physician, nurse or midwife or other person subject to this section shall apply or cause to be applied to the child's eyes and alternative treatment included in guidance issued by the Department of State Health Services or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
(b) Failure to perform is a Class B misdemeanor under the Texas Health and Safety Code.
Interesting. That's intense. But does CPS come marching in and take the baby from the hospital? That's the part I was flabbergasted about.
I have done everything that was recommended and the flu shot etc.
I am not sure in the guardesil, but I have maybe 5 years before my kids will get it, so I'll definitely research it then and probably get it. I definitely want to research things first and not on the internet but in peer reviewed scientific journals and with my doctor.
My mom even said vaccines and autism thing and never heard it was disproven. I told her it was, but still so much misinformation is out there of people that don't look into it or don't use the best research methods.

So can I toss a stupid vax question in here?
My titres got tested when I first got pregnant and showed that I was not immune to rubella. I got vaxxed again after delivery. Then when they did my bloodwork for my second pregnancy, I again showed as not immune for rubella. I didn't think to ask, but does this mean that the vax just doesn't work on me? Should I get it again and maybe it will work this time?

I have this too and have been told I can have 2 MMR shots then that's it, essentially. As I understand, we are likely immune, but the test doesn't pick it up. Paging @thatgolfbitch and joy to help clarify.

This reads that failure of the provider to apply it is a misdemeanor. A parent can refuse and the provider can document that.
I don't understand where these people draw the line when it comes to their children's health. If you won't give them a freaking vitamin shot, then what will you give them? This thread had me googling vaccine laws in my state and there is information on these anti-vaccine websites about refusing things like newborn screenings. I can't even.

When I was pregnant with my first, they showed I was immune to rubella, but not with my second and I had to get the vaccine. I always wondered how I lost immunity in 1.5 years but didn't know who to ask.

Your immunity can wax and wane during your lifetime naturally. Some people maintain immunity better than others, and sometimes it's bug specific. Most of the time it doesn't matter as an adult because most bugs cause the most damage during childhood. Once you get past that point, you lose immunity and get the infection with little harm. The main times it matters are bugs that cause harm in adults too, being immunocompromised, or pregnancy/close contact with infants. And sometimes when traveling.
That's a long way of saying that the only thing that's worrisome about your MMR related immunity is pregnancy and infants.

I feel like bragging here that immunology is the category I scored highest in on my board exam last year. I was a bit shocked because it is one of the more complicated subjects, IMO.
But I do work in an immunology lab technically (flow cytometry, so not serology, but right next door) so I suppose I should have a bit of knowledge.

I felt so gross after birth I got up and showered right away and they did all the tests and pokes then. I'm guessing they did this but it was never mentioned, they could have swapped her with another kid and I would have had no idea. I just really wanted to shower.
I don't know where we are because I'm still reading, but I just want to say I have all the jealousy here. They wouldn't let me shower until the next day because they wanted to make sure I was stable after induction and could stand by myself. I was so cranky. DNW to sit in my own sweat and blood until the next day, thankyouverymuch.
I had a c-section, they wouldn't let me out of bed until the next day and then they wouldn't let me shower until the day after that! I was not pleased.
I will say it was the second greatest shower of my life. The best one was the first one I took when I got home lol.
Someone in a FB group that I'm in posted about this and the responses were ridiculous. One person said "We don't do vitamin K because we don't do things to our children will make them bleed."
I am so sad I'm late to this party, @thatgolfbitch I have all the feels for you right now.
This is my hill to die on too. I want to talk all sciency and post articles, but that may be overkill since everything has already been discussed.
Bottom line, vaccinate and don't decline the eye ointment or vitamin K (they are both important for preventing neonatal blindness & brain bleeds, respectively), kthanks.

I worry for the future.
Wut?
My bro's gf is vehemently anti-vaxx. They turned down the eye ointment and brought their own vit K drops purchased thru an online natural medicine website. Their daughter was born a few months ago and I've already had multiple comments about my child and his "daycare germs." Which I can appreciate with a newborn, but it seems like an odd dichotomy. Like are you or aren't you worried about preventable illnesses? Or do you just enjoy being snatchy about my child?
Ew. Stupid Snatch.
I mean that's ridiculous. My DD brought all her daycare germs home to her newborn brother LOL. Actually, the day we brought him home, she started puking everywhere and had a wicked nasty virus, ending her up in the hospital. I panicked but he was fine.

You responded right? I hope with something along the lines, "refusing vitamin K actually gives your child a higher risk of bleeding, unfortunately most likely into their brain, so I'd probably take a couple drops of blood under a band-aid." (Ok that may be an extreme classification of VKDB, maybe you could just link this?
Here is my question to the mom who doesn't want her kid to bleed so refused vitamin k, if your child did develop VKDB, would you take them to the hospital to be treated? Yes of course, which would be so much more invasive then the vitamin K shot. So just vaccinate.
Same with people who develop measles after refusing vaccination, who show up for treatment, so now you want to trust the establishment?! Of course you do, because medicine heals and is for the good. Gahhhhhh

Logic defies all antivaxers. I was once sharing a fundraising page for the Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. This friend of my sisters comes in and says he won't support the Preeclampsia Foundation because one of the local sponsors was Providence. Apparently because they provide vaccines he couldn't support the foundation or my team. It was so odd and out of nowhere. It was such a strange place to bring up vaccinations.
I wish I had been FB friends with laala at the time so she could have ripped him a new one.
