My little girl is 11 weeks and she eats pretty well. We haven't had any task issues except she was a very sleepy baby. I woke her to feed in the middle of the night and even during the day in the first few weeks. We've both adjusted and now I'm not hard as a rock when she sleeps nine to eleven hours at night. We still manage to get in seven to eight feeds a day because she's eating every ninety minutes to two hours the rest of the time. She eats well from a bottle of pumped milk from my husband on the three evenings a week I work part time.

I have two concerns right now:

1) She doesn't nurse in public very well. She'll pop off and cry after a few short gulps when I'm at new mommy class. I don't know if it's just too bright and loud for her, but she does the same thing under a cover.

2) I need to be away from her all day for one day in a few weeks. I'm adding a pump in the morning to create a freezer stash and I'll find a way to pump that day. I'm not going back to work until April or May so I didn't expect to need to figure this out so soon. Should I practice giving her bottles during the day to make sure she'll do more than one or two in a day or just to make sure she'll take milk that's been frozen?

sometimes it takes a while for them to get used to nip too. its loud and bright and the room smells different lol. just keep practicing. if you are nervous about her nursing you might have a bit slower let down than usual too.

I would not worry too much if you know she'll take a bottle from your dh she's do fine you don't have to practice if she'll take 3 bottles ok or not.  you can check your frozen milk to ensure there isn't a lipase issue.

@amyg, LO is taking a bottle better at daycare. While I was at work, she sucked down 18 oz. On Monday she had only taken 8.5 oz. She's a hungry girl! My husband will try again this weekend to give a bottle. Any tips for him? She equates being home with mommy and boob. I obviously don't want to change that!

I would aim to pump 3 times a day at work.  It's easier to keep supply high than it is to get it to go up.  If you are at work 8 hours plus drive time to daycare, it's best to pump as often as baby is eating (or should be eating) whe you are apart. 

So have you tried other bottles, slower or faster flow, longer or shorter nipple, different shaped nipples, other positions to give bottle, and different warmth of milk plus warming the nipple itself?

We tried a bottle with a little shorter nipple and she took 9oz at daycare yesterday. The Lansinoh Momma bottle if anyone's interested.

I'm still not sure logistically how to manage 3 pumps. I feed her first thing in the AM. The first few hours at work are the busiest time of the day. I pump at my earliest opportunity, between 9 and 10. Then I pump again at lunch hour, around 12:30-1. I leave by 3 and I feed the baby right away when I pick her up. It seems a lot of people do a 9/12/3 schedule. I could potentially move my midday pump to 12 and do a pump around 2 but afternoons are variable with meetings.

Um something like yes babies can be allergic to anything that adults can be allergic to including coconut. But you'd see other signs like green slimy mucousy poop maybe tinged if blood. Eczema skin rashes red ring at anus spit up fussy gassy things like that.

If you can't pump before 9 or 10 and leave at three you are probably ok but dome moms would pump sometime right before work starts if there is a long time between morning nursing sessions and the first pump at work. It's usually way easier to drop a pump later on than it is to add a pump. Work gets used to what you say you need to do and might not be as understanding of adding pumps as baby gets older. Does that make sense? If course if you just can't do it more often then don't. Of you begin to run short you'll have to add other pump sessions before or after work or middle of the night

Ok so in 8 hours at daycare you expect them to take about 8 oz maybe 12 (an additional feed). So is be way more ok With the 8.5 oz tans consider the 18 oz fast flow bottle and overfeeding

I'm still having nipple pain with blanching and burning. It's not thrush, it's not a bad latch, it's not a clogged duct, and it's not mastitis. I might call the ob and see if I can get apno.

If you are returning to work when? And have you started pumping yet? I'm not returning to work. I get to be a SAHM I do pump one time a day in the am bc it relieves my fullness pain.

Question: should I still be feeding every 2 hours during the day? Or can I let her set the pace now?

Blanching can be related to bad latch or to vasospasms. burning is usualy thrush or bad latch (rubbing). Have you been to see an IBCLC lactation consultant for evaluation, cause something isn't right. Vasospasms can be caused by thrush or bad latch with nipple damage. or they can be a spasm of the nerve endings for another reason. Do they turn white? purple? do they hurt at the end of a feeding and warmth makes them feel better.

APNO is bacitracin (similar to neosporin for bacteria), an antifungal (in case of yeast), a steroid creme(for swelling and inflammation) and usually a pain relieving creme.

At 5 weeks if weight gain is fine then no you certainly don't have to keep waking baby up every 2 hours. let baby be your guide. Ideally feeds during the day would be closer to 2.5-3 hours in the hopes that will get enough food in that night feeds will stretch out past 3-4 hours.<br/>

Thank you. my right nipple turns white then purple bruise color then back to normal. Heat helps but I can't stand it touching fabric. It hurts. Olivia clamped down on it yesterday. I'm going back to the lc today :/

@amyg Is it expected that pump output goes down over time, or just a common occurrence? I'm curious because I BFd my first two for two years with no supply issues (well a bit of oversupply with #2 while tandem nursing but it resolved) but only pumped when they were a little older and not full time M-F, just enough for a couple days/week. I'm in new territory now because I'm working full time and baby started daycare earlier. I'm paranoid that there'll be some sudden drop and I won't have what my baby needs, even though there's nothing in my history to suggest that would happen.

Do you keep his head elevated while you feed him? I have to feed LO slightly sitting up. Since I've started that (now that his head is less floppy - he's only 8 weeks so he's not there yet), he spits up a lot less while eating. When he spits up, it's usually full on out the mouth and nose. He gets held upright for a bit, and for right now is in a rnp but we have a crib wedge to try out.

We even do our diaper changes before feedings. When we have to change him during or immediately after a feeding (I'm looking at you, poop), he more often than not spits up while we are changing him.

Do you think it might be an over eating problem instead of reflux? Or does he arch his back while he's eating? He could be eating more to sooth reflux, causing him to spit up the excess.

I will try to hold him more upright and see if that helps. I can't even change him before the feed bc he wants to eat right away and yells at me to let me know! Lol I don't think it's reflux bc it doesn't seem to bother him but I could be wrong. I think he's just associates waking up with eating, soo every time he wakes up he wants to eat. It has gotten a little better last week he was up every hour wanting to eat (hopefully that was early 3 month growth spurt)! I am also going to make sure I burp him more, sometimes I get lazy in the motn, will he still burp if he is sleeping? Thanks for you advice.

Often it's just that we are too tired at night to fully burp them. Also supply tends to be extra high after midnight and they may just get too much too fast and then spit up the extra. Try feeding on one side primarily, sitting baby more upright for feeds, baby's head higher than the breast and burping more and longer.

Usually pump output goes down. But it doesn't always. Good pump practices helps- like if you reach into the freezer to get milk if you come up shirt good pump practice is to add to pump sessions longer or an additional one to restash that milk. Also nursing as much as you can when you are together helps to take the pressure off if you come up short baby can make up the difference by nursing more she. You are together. And nursing will reboost supply that may drop during the week of pumping. Sudden drops are usually from things like supplementing and not pumping or supply drop from needing to change your pump membranes or your period returning or illness but that's all fixable

I'm still trying to get a handle on the math, I'm new at this. I definitely need to look more into paced feeding. My mother in law also watches her so I need to educate us. As for daycare, she ate probably more than normal, I was just thrilled she took the bottle!! I pumped enough in 2 pumps to cover the 18 oz. that she ate. Maybe I have an oversupply. Idk. She does seem to eat a lot during the day (she sleeps 8-9 hours at night). Maybe I'm just a hot mess and I don't realize it!

Well we are officially having a growth spurt! Feeding every 1 to 1.5 hours and a fussy girl. Dear lord help my nipples! Turns out I have vasospasms :0/ apno and heat and olive oil should help with the pain.
