I'm of the opinion daycare = preschool (or at least it does around these parts).
DD has been fighting sleep all day, so that's fun.
DS just asked for a book while he was on the potty....and then proceeded to take a big poop.
So judgement is coming below, skip if you dont want to read. My friend (the one who donates her BM to us) had her DD"s 4 month appointment today (a week late). Anywho her DD is 14.5 lbs and 25.2 inches and drinks 35oz/day of expressed BM. Her doctor said to go ahead and give food to fill her up since that's "too much breastmilk" for a baby to be drinking. My friend said that a 5 oz bottle is only satisfying for 90 min-2 hours ad that she won't sleep unless she's eating (feed to sleep). I'm thinking her kid is either a)hungry or b) has associated the bottle as a prelude to sleep. I do desperately want to tell her to not feed solids to her DD (especially since she's planning on starting with rice cereal), but not my kid so I have no right.
The cereal feeding feels a lot like saying you should eat a rice cake to feel full if you've been eating full fat yogurt all day. Like. It might feel different in your belly but it sure AF won't fill you up... But maybe my comparison is totally off? I just dont get how something less calorie dense makes sense.
I think the cereal sits in the tummy longer so they do feel fuller. But my first one proved that fullness doesn't equal sleep or eating less. But for some kids it does. Idk how they would measure bm since most folks don't exclusively pump so who knows how much the avg babe is getting. My baby probably gets 25 ounces some days and 35 other days and it evens out. Now that babe is taking bottles, daycare is asking for 4 ounce bottles. But he's already taking 4 bottles in 9 hours. I don't pump 16 ounces every day. Mostly because I can't pump 4 times/ day. Idk what to say to them. Give him a paci if he'll take it. Let him fuss ? Idk. I can't just create more milk. I've got what I've got. He's satisfied when we're together so I don't get it. Just hold him or pat him?
I had a glorious week where DS2 only drank 16oz at daycare and I could actually keep up with him and pumping. Today, 20 oz. little dude, I can barely make time to pump what I do.
Baby girl had trouble eating at D.C. today... I got there and she had eaten two bottles and refused all the others, which they had to throw out because they heated them too many times. Now I'm out 10 oz of breast milk from the freezer and pissed that she wouldn't eat... She naturally ate from the boob when she got home (I guess the nursing strike is over?) and inhaled another 4 oz that I pumped. I'm scared I'm going to have to start supplementing soon if she keeps this up.
@snuff9861, that's not too much. Besides, I've been told that they mostly hate the rice cereal and I should skip it. My SIL is already feeding her 3 month old starter foods and here I am with a nearly 5 month old still EBF-ing. Is she feeding solids too early or am I being overly judgmental?
Thanks for thinking of us. I only work T,W,F so I've been with her since they got clipped-took Friday off. My in-laws are here since DH is out of town (I love them) and they tried a bottle yesterday but she was a big grump all day and wanted nothing to do with it. We're gonna try again after this afternoon nap and see how it goes.
I have the follow-up with the dentist and LC Thursday. Daycare tomorrow so fingers crossed. I've been adamant about the stretches even though she hates them.
One thing that the LC did to get him to take a bottle was to face him out away from the body and put the hand under his chin and feed him completely upright and while moving/ walking around. It's a bit of a circus act, but it was getting him distracted and not thinking about it and let instinct take over. Make sure the thumb is touching right by the mouth- they like the feeling of skin while sucking. Hopefully the LC can get her started and then it will just slowly get better.
Thanks, I'll check with daycare tomorrow to see if they've tried that too. They are very determined to get her to eat, which is nice.

Time to cook dinner. Peace out, ladies!
IMO: YES. They are multiple theories out there about virgin guts etc. I personally feel baby should be able to sit independently and have lost the tongue thrust reflux (which no 3 month old has). Essentially any food before the age of 1 is for experience and is not meant to be nutrition in place of BM or formula.
britta I forget how much I told you all. The initial offer sucked and I declined it. A week later, they called me back with a MUCH better offer, but no insurance. My current employer ended up countering when I told them I was considering leaving, so I stayed. I am glad I did, because right after we found out DS was going to need the MRI and some other tests that are going to be pretty costly.
You left us with the other company countering, but no insurance, so you were looking into getting it through YH. I think? Anyway, I'm glad to hear your current company stepped up, that's awesome!
I've skimmed so I'm responding to what I remember...
I have no idea how many ounces is "normal" when it comes to BF babies, so there's that, but it doesn't seem to me that your friend's baby is taking "too much" @snuff9861. It sounds like baby truly is hungry and at this age, BF or not, I'd be inclined to up the amount of formula/BM being offered before trying cereal/solids. In theory rice cereal, sits in the belly longer (and is heavier in calories), so baby probably would be fuller...but why you wouldn't just feed more formula/BM. Or at least offer more often? Anyway, there's a reason why adding rice cereal to bottles isn't recommended anymore, so it seems weird to recommend starting it so young just because a baby seems to be eating "too much." Also, I think it's all a crapshoot. Both my kids have been fed Enfamil AR because of reflux (with added rice starch, but not full on cereal, so filler but less calories) and my MIL swears that's why DS1 slept through the night. Which is a flawed theory because, um, DS2 doesn't. So.
Re: preschool vs daycare preschool...DS1 is in the preschool class at his daycare and it's way more than sufficient for preschool needs. I will say, not all daycare "preschools" are created equal though. My sister's kids go to a daycare with a "preschool based curriculum" but aren't learning nearly as much as DS1 is.
So, thanks for all the positive vibes!! I feel like the interview went really well!!! It was super laid back because she knows me already and had very few actual "interview" questions. It was more a question and answer session about what the job looks like, how the service is changing and what that means for the role, etc. We talked for about an hour and then she was like, "What do you think about job shadowing?" I got excited and told her I'd absolutely be interested in that, we went back and forth about a good time this week, and then she was like, "Why don't you just go up there now?" So I spent 2.5 hours working with the nurses that were there today, going over what their days look like, where everything is at, how to fill out the database, and then rounded with one of the transplant docs. The practice manager said she'd get with me at the beginning of next week at the latest, but was hoping to have next step info to me by the end of this week. I'm so fracking excited.

So sounds like she was just priming you for the job. So when do you start

Was it frozen milk that she was rejecting? My first son refused frozen BM. I wasted a ton of milk because of it. All the time and effort went down the drain. I pumped around the clock for 6+ months straight. This time around I have zero frozen stash.
It was indeed! But she used to take it, so I am confused.... Maybe she's getting picky?
britta, before I got my current job, one of my supervisors had me shadow the person who does a similar job to mine for a few days. Then I got the call that I got my job. I really hope the same thing happens for you. Congrats!
How is 35oz too much breastmilk? That sounds crazy to me.
From what I've read it is a lot, but I don't consider it "too much" Babies who are on BM exclusively *USUALLY* drink anywhere from 19-30oz/day. But I mean some are going to eat more and some less. It's how they come with averages is it not? For example my DD is combo fed 50/50 and drink between 24-30 oz/day. But FF babies tend to eat more, closer to 40 oz a day at this point.
DD1 are 28 oz a day at daycare alone. With 2-3 feedings outside of daycare I'm sure she was well over 35 oz. My pedi said if she is hungry feed her. We were never told to start with rice cereal other than as a "normal" first food. Yes there is a typical range for babies to eat but some babies eat more. DD was never higher than 70% for weight and that was within her appropriate growth trajectory and is a skinny tall two year old now.

Did you ever check to see if you have too much lipase in your milk? It might not be apparent when it's fresh but when it's frozen it gets progressively grosser if you don't scald it before freezing. Mine does and I had the same issue with DD 1. I was so sad to waste that milk.
