I tried a few off brands with DS when he was born but unfortunately he peed through them. So the cost difference wasn't worth it for me when I was going through them twice as fast in fear he was going to soak through. For me, Huggies newborn for the umbilical cord cut out and once it fell off, switch to pampers. Amazon subscribe and save is the cheapest and I've already started stick piling. Concentrate on size 1 and 2. You will get newborn from hospital (if that's your birth plan) and people who buy you diapers tend to buy smaller size.
ETA: pampers has a sensitive version if you are worried about skin sensitivities.
We have used Target, Pampers, and Luvs. We have no complaints on any of them. We typically use the Target brand due to cost/quantity value. Although Target was out of their brand yesterday in Sz 4 so I resorted to Luvs again. Pampers are high, but you get lots of coupons in the beginning! If you can buy the largest box the stores offer. You will find that you spend less and the supply lasts longer. We are down to about one case (140) diapers a month.

The only negative thing about pampers was that dd leaked through them. But as NB size they were fine. Huggies were good too, but we stuck with babies r us brand and have never had any issues and we like them.

When we use disposables, I find Huggies the best for day use and pampers best for night use. I like the stretchy back on Huggies during the day to get a good fit.
I tried Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, and Wally Brand. Luvs worked well and we still give them to Daycare, they are just cut smaller than the rest (at least on our DS). Wally.. Just no... Only if you want to change your child every fifteen mins. Huggies, DS peed through them more times than I can count. We tend to stick with Pampers. One way I get them is from Sams Club. You can get big boxes for like $45.00. They normally have coupons in them to add free wipes. Also Diapers.com will have a percent off coupon every now and then. This time through I've got four boxes on layaway at Kmart, and I'm starting to stock pile now. As room is an issue at this time with stuff to store.
My DH and I did some research on this on Saturday to make our budget for when Baby Pic arrives.
I debated Honest brand because you can bundle with wipes but I think using Pampers through Amazon Prime may be most cost effective. He's been told by friends that Pampers is the way to go. Has anyone used Honest out of curiosity? Those things are just so darn cute.
Another Yes for Amazon from my experience. Pampers seemed to be what worked best for DD, and we got the best deal through AMazon. Every once in a while, with a sale and coupon, I could get a better deal in a store, but it wasn't worth all the time and research and actual trips to the store to save like $1. I started with Amazon Mom/Prime back when the discount was even better than it is now so I am happy to see people still recommending them. I was hoping the changes to the % discount hadn't made it not worth it.
Pampers newborn also has the cord cutout now. That's the only reason I buy newborn really. My hospital goes right into size 1 and just folds the tops down, so I know that works early on.
Keep your receipts taped to your boxes when you buy them. I've never had a problem exchanging at Target or BRU though as long as it was for a different size. Also target will let you return anything baby related without a receipt as long as you have a registry with them.
I just pay attention to the deals. Like right now at sams club if you buy a case of diapers and wipes you save $10. Practically every other week target does deals where you buy 2 and get a giftcard. Just last week they had a killer deal where if you spend $100 on diapers and wipes you got a $25 gift card. Also you could combine it with the buy 3 cases of wipes get a $5 gift card.
Do cost comparisons in the store with small packs to big ones. The other day I had printed a ton of coupons from pampers and it was cheaper for me (and more diapers) to buy several small packs instead of the big one.

What's a good cost per diaper? I just received a link to dollar diaper club (like dollar shave club) and was going to look into it. They're organic/natural/no carcinogens, bleach etc which is what I have even looking at.

We use cloth now, but when we used 'sposies we bought the Target brand. They are inexpensive and always worked well for us. When we had name brand diapers I preferred the Pampers to the Huggies, but most diapers we tried were fine for DD. You may have to try a few brands to see what works best for you and baby.
I have a (sort of) related question, not trying to thread-jack, but are you supposed to put diapers on your registry(ies)?
Do it!! You get a 10% off code at the end. So even if no one buys any you can save a bundle. I am registering for baby #2 privately to get the discount.

Just wanted to point out that this is another good reason, in addition to the completion discount, to do a registry at Target even if you are on a 2nd child and not having a shower.
I love the target diapers. I preferred pampers swaddlers for newborn/size one. Now we use huggies for our two year old because we've moved into the boonies and I don't always want to drive to target

The timing of this is too funny. I'm a huge planner and number lover so I am actually in the process of making a spreadsheet that has the different stores, brands, price per diaper, sales, coupon column, etc. with formulas to give me the best pricing. From research you can get diapers priced as low as (per diaper): Newborn .13 - .16 1 .11 - .14 2 .14 - .16 3 .16 - .19 4 .19 - .22 5 .22 - .26 6 .26 - .30
Regular pricing is much higher. So I'll be looking at the sales/coupons and putting them into my handy dandy spreadsheet to pop out who has the best .
I'm a nerd. If there is a way to share it when I'm done I will
ETA: pricing is per diaper... (I'm sure this is obvious).

I just got an email from diapers.com since I put my email into everything free possible (P&G). They have a current special for $10 off your first box of pampers, $5 off any future box, and free shipping if you spend $50. I just bought two boxes of newborns. (I know you should start with size one, but I'm havin twins and figured 2 boxes of newborns I should be fine with).

I love having Amazon prime and getting my diapers from them. I highly recommend pampers and do not care for huggies at all. They run small. The large the size of diaper the more you pay and the less diapers you get. I would rather pay a little more for pampers and be down a size (pampers run bigger than huggies).
If you want an inexpensive diaper but not cheap quality I would opt for Luvs. They are made by the same parent company as pampers. They are not as think or absorbent as pampers but close.
Target/Meijer (if you have Meijers by you) diapers are okay, probably my third choice. They are a little stiffer feeling than loves and pampers and again not as absorbent.
I think walgreens, Walmart, and cvs diapers are not good either they do not keep the baby as dry as the aforementioned brands. They also tend to have an odor after a baby wets in them.
Huggies will absorb better than Walmart, walgreens, and cvs in my opinion but again run small and do not fit a big baby well in my opinion.
None of those are as bad as Costco. Coscto are probably the worst of any diaper I have ever used. Anytime they have given away free samples and I thought perhaps to try them again or keep them in my car as an emergency they leak everywhere. I will now pass up the free samples because they just are ineffective.
The plus to Amazon prime, you can get other diapers with your prime not just pampers. Furthermore, you can get other items such as paper towel, water filters, razors, cat/dog food, toilet paper, etc all on subscribe and save! It is a great option!
Also, if you like to watch for deals, check out BabyCheapskate.com and look for the Top Diaper and Formula Deals of the Week every week. She breaks it down to cost per diaper and wipe and links to coupons and such in the posts.
We've usually used Luvs and Parent's Choice from Wal-mart. The Luvs is a lot like Pampers, but cheaper. Parent's Choice used to work better, but they recently changed their diapers and they don't seem to work as well. We often have to order our diapers if we don't get to the city, and Amazon is definitely our best choice for that with Subscribe and Save and Amazon Mom.
I'm a Pampers girl. DD blew out Huggies and soaked through Target brand but we've never had an issue with Pampers. I started her on the sensitive Pampers then we went to swaddlers then cruisers around size 3 (based on what Amazon Mom had in stock). I have stocked up on a variety of sizes of pampers already with coupons and gift card deals at Target and I may end up doing Amazon Mom again after I've exhausted the supply. It was nice to have the diapers delivered to the house and not worry about having to pick any up at the store, plus they tended to be cheaper with mom+subscribe and save.
I need to do my own diaper research as I cloth diapered my first two and plan on using sposies for #3. My laundry volume is out of control and I just can't add to that insanity. Anyways, I was looking at honest company and seventh generation. Haven't seen them mentioned on here.

Do you recommend (anyone) starting out with sensitive diapers or just trying the originals? I want to get a few, but am leery to buy a large pack without knowing if they'll work okay. I know every baby is different, so this might be tough to actually ask. In my experience with family members on both sides, none of needed sensitive diapers.

Costco has actually been our go-to diaper since our son was 6 mos. They do the job. I'm using coupons and stockpiling for baby number two now. I'll probably buy a variety of brands. Newborn up and up, pampers and Huggies worked well. Luvs and up and up did a great job before we joined costco. Only store brand I thought didn't do it's job was Parent's Choice (Wal Mart).

We used Huggies pure & natural diapers and Pampers sensitive wipes the whole time DD was in diapers. Somewhat more expensive than the standard diapers, but we really liked them and DD had maybe two diaper rashes total. We got them in the giant 160-ish count packs through Amazon Prime/Amazon Mom/Subscribe & Save so they really weren't too bad.
