No one in this thread was saying that healthy eating is not an option for THEMSELVES. They were referring to those who are struggling to make ends meet to feed their family.
Let's compare.... McDonald's hamburgers from the 99cent menu to feed a family of 6 - $6 plus change. A package of lean ground beef or ground turkey (at least $6 here), whole-grain buns ($2), cheese ($5).
REALLY!?!?!?
So each person in that family of six is going to eat one tiny 99 cent hamburger for dinner and be satiated? Okay.
I'm not even going to touch this subject, and I skipped most of the pages of this thread. I'm just here to say, why does everyone seem to think eating healthy is so expensive? I work in a health food store. Buying healthy food and cooking at home can absolutely be cheaper than eating junk and cheap processed foods, provided you know where to go and what to buy, and aren't shopping at stores like Whole Foods. The misconception that healthy eating is expensive isn't helping the obesity epidemic in our country.

Are you joking? What did I say here that was anything other than calm and reasonable?
No jokes. You're getting pretty defensive anytime anyone questions you. You've taken on a "I'm right & I'm not arguing or answering questions/giving examples because I know I'm right!" attitude...you know that shit doesn't fly here.
Show me where I was defensive. I was asked to come up with a $50 grocery list of healthy foods. I got up at 6:30 this morning and spent the day working at the store. I'm not in the mood to do that. I declined to argue. I still maintain that I'm right. I can't begin to imagine why any of that would be offensive to you.
Maybe I am being hormonal but this just makes me sad.
Have anyone here ever went to bed hungry? I came to the US when i was 8 and prior to that I knew what hunger was. At eight years old I understood what it felt to drink water and go to bed. Some nights we didn't have water because water sometimes went away.
I know what it means to be food insecure. To this day we buy more dry food than refrigerated food. I have a barrel of food sitting in my house in case we every got in a situation were we didn't have food. I buy can food all the time. I cook most of our meals. Those things never leave you. In a tropical island in the caribbean sea buying fruits and vegetables were expensive. I want to know how it is much cheaper in a country where most of the fruit is sold by poundage.
It is not cheaper here. That is where Cabgirl is wrong. Fresh fruits and veggies are spendy and spoil fast. She has special access to cheap stuff in her store apparently.
Yes. I'd say 30-40% of our customers use SNAP benefits.
What time do you stay open to?
edit: or what time does your store close? the above didn't sound right to me.
cabgirl, this is an important question. Because many people work late hours, and if you are closed they can't make it to your CHEAPER store for that healthy food.
So in reality, if you aren't staying open 24hours or to a late hour, then NO, it is not CHEAPER to eat healthy when the only option for someone is to go to a big grocery store and pay higher prices.

You're right Cab. Everyone else is just floating in a sea of wrong. You're the only one right here, would you care to throw us all a life jacket?

Your privilege is showing.
Don't fucking even.
You have no idea where I came from, where I've been, or what it took for me to get to this place. NO idea. You know what? I AM privileged to be where I am. I'm grateful every fucking day, because I DO know what it's like to be hungry.

You sound like a child singing "I am right and you are wrong na na na boo boo".
You started the argument and are mad that people called you out and you can't back up your statements.

If it's even cheap at all. I would bet anything that what I consider cheap and what she considers cheap are completely different.

You know what? I shouldn't have started this if I wasn't willing to argue it out. But I wasn't rude or antagonistic with any of you. (Least of all you - I don't think I even addressed you at any point, did I?) So I'm really not sure why you feel the need to be sarcastic with me, and I honestly don't really appreciate it.
cabgirl,Yes we get in an uproar when you have an opinion about something and blatantly refuse to see ANY other side.
Sure, in your health stores case, it is cheaper for some healthy food. This is not the case EVERYWHERE, and for you to say it's right and that's what pisses me off.
You have no idea where I came from, where I've been, or what it took for me to get to this place. NO idea. You know what? I AM privileged to be where I am. I'm grateful every fucking day, because I DO know what it's like to be hungry.
You may know what hunger is, but do you know what it is to try and feed a family on not enough money? If you did you wouldn't say shit about buying fresh ORGANIC fruits and veggies

So keep telling us we're all clearly wrong and you're the only right one here but refuse to give us any examples. This is really helping your point.

Or we can talk transportation. Even if there is a magic low-price produce store, it's probably the only one in the city. How do you get there if you're on a limited income and maybe don't have a car. Should you take 3 buses and an hour of your time to get there?

Have you forgotten where you are??? WE ARE SARCASTIC!!!! How you would think we would be anything different is insane with the amount of time you've been spending here lately.

Then show some fucking compassion! Any mother would want to feed their child healthy meals. However, if the option is full stomach or wholesome expensive meals, they will choose a full stomach.
Exactly my point with the McDonald's 99cent menu example. Not to mention that a working single mother is likely exhausted and would prefer spending her time at home with her children and not cooking and cleaning dishes.

In what way have I said ANYTHING that lacks compassion?! Are you kidding me? The fact that you think I'm judging ANYONE for doing WHATEVER they need to do to feed themselves and their family honestly makes me want to cry. I judge no one. I know what it's like. I do think eating healthy can be affordable. I also think that sometimes that's not an option, because not everyone has the time to meal plan, shop accordingly and carefully, and make home cooked meals. And that really is an unfortunate thing, because everyone deserves good nutrition. PLEASE do not think I lack compassion for the plight of those who struggle to feed their families.

And don't forget-you need to do this multiple times a week because fresh food spoils much faster than processed food!

If you work at the store, I don't understand why it's so hard for you to give us examples of how healthy MEALS can be cheaper than processed/convenient foods. All you have told us is the price of a bag of apples.

No. It's a sensitive subject for me. I knew better than to even open this thread, and it was dumb as fuck of me to open my mouth. I fully, completely regret it. I'm going to step away now.
I'm not sure I could have, but I do apologize if I actually offended anyone.

this is not an apology^^^ starting with your opinion, then adding the obligatory apology to get this to stop.
adding for clarity: How are you not sure you could have offended anyone??

Way to apologize without actually apologizing- you should have just walked away. you would have been better off saying sorry not sorry
