I'm about 5 seconds from giving up and switching to formula. O destroyed my right nipple so I have been pumping only from that side for 24 hours. I've only been able to get an ounce each time and he has breezed through the paltry stash and my right can't keep up. I'm exhausted and both my nipples are killing me. However, I am terrified of complications from drying up.
Whatever you choose to do, is ok. I don't have a ton of experience but I can try and help.
If you want to trouble shoot a bit more: - There is a prescription nipple cream you can get from your Dr that is supposed to help with the pain - if you express BM onto your nipple let it dry and then put on a cream and then before each feed put an ice cube on your nipple before letting him latch - can buy time for your nipple to recover - See a LC to fix LOs latch
If you choose to stop: When DD weaned it was because I was pregnant so I'm not sure if it's common but my experience wasn't bad at all and it wasn't painful. My milk was gone in about 3 days., and my boobs retuned to their pre-preg size about two weeks later. I was engorged the first day but I hand expressed just enough to relieve pain (don't empty). I wore a tight bra and didn't touch my boobs.
It's a tough decision because of the stigma around formula, and the mom guilt but as long as baby is eating you're doing what works for your family. Good luck.
PSA: not all reusable nursing pads are created equal. My etsy and medela pads are awesome. My grandmother sent me some from somewhere and holy hell. Dried my nipples out so bad it felt like Noah was hiding a knife in his mouth when he latched on. It took me all day to realize that's why I was hurting so bad. It's been an hour and one feeding without them and I feel so much better now.

We did a weight gain follow up today. DS gained 126 grams in 2 days. I'm blaming that cluster feed last night for a chunk of this gain. Crazy! He's 42 g from his birth weight and is up over his hospital discharge weight.
Has anyone started creating their freezer stash yet?
Yup! I pump after the first morning feed. Ds only nurses on one side so the other is pretty full after the night time. If I didn't I pump, I would be totally engorged on one side. I am feeling pretty good about the start I have for him. Plus it is helping me figure out the time needed for the morning routine.

Waking the baby to eat is painful. She's getting better and sometimes a diaper change/strip down is all it takes. But I wish she could wake herself when hungry. Another weight check on Monday and we'll see what's next based on how that goes!
I think my milk is coming in but I'm not sure he's getting enough. He slept most of the day today and then wanted to feed for over an hour. I'm wondering if he wanted to keep feeding because he wasn't getting any. Well his last two diapers had very little poop. Also, he will not sleep anywhere but in our arms tonight. Currently, H is walking him around the house.
You're only a few days out...this is totally normal...he is on the boob to help your milk come in faster.

My left nipple survived a 5 hour cluster feed of every hour for 15 minutes! Still haven't resulted to the formula, but it is on the counter just in case.

Yep you're in your cluster feed stage. The first one anyways. Ugh.
Re: freezer stash.... I need to get on this. The problem I'm having is how much to freeze in each bag? It's my understanding it goes bad fairly quickly once thawed so you want small amounts correct? I just don't know what to expect as far as how much a normal feed would be in a couple months.
hopefulreturn I have the same problem. Latching during the day is great. Latching at night is so frustrating for both of us that I've almost resorted to pumping.

I'm close too. And the past few nights she's so hard to get back to sleep after. The screaming, spit up and want to just suck on my nipple painfully. Hoping we both sleep a few hours and get better morning feedings!
I felt really sick today - fever, chills, achey, and nauseous in addition to a very warm, pAinful, red breast. I finally went into the ER. The doctor took one look and diagnosed me with mastisis. I got some antibiotics and hopefully they kick in quick. He said I should continue pumping and it's fine to feed LO breast milk while on the meds. Doctor explained it's usually caused when bacteria from LO's mouth gets into the breast from open cracks on damaged nipples.

Ah, we are living the exact same pain. Good luck tonight, FX for some sleep!

Ouch! Hope those antibiotics kick in and you on the mend soon!

With my status as a prize dairy cow, I have been able to put away at least 6 oz a day for just over a week. All I do is pump the side he doesn't take, and maybe empty the side he does if he wasn't really hungry.
People who are freezing milk. I would take some out after a few weeks and try to get your baby to try it. Some people have lipase issues, basically where your frozen milk tastes like soap, and your baby won't drink it. I got to throw away like 100 oz of frozen milk last time because of this :/

I had mastitis Monday and have been on antibiotics and now I think I have thrush. My right breast isnt horrible and I've been suffering through feeding on the left but I can't do it anymore. My nipple and breast are in so much pain and they just ache. Pain does not go away once I start nursing and I know her latch is right. I want to pump on the left side but I hadn't been responding to the pump very well but I don't know what else to do. I guess I can feed on the right, pump what I can and use formula too if needed and hope my supply doesn't suffer to much. I took a pill for yeast this morning and have medicine for her mouth to avoid hopefully passing it back and forth.
Great advice lindy! So sorry to all those dealing with mastitis. Ugh, why can't breastfeeding be simple and easy?
hopefulreturn how did it go last night? We were up every 1.5 hours and my nipples are just done. He is so impatient for milk in the MOTN and yet way to lazy to properly work for it. Oh the tears from both of us.

It went ok. She does not often wake herself to feed so we wake her but then she wants to just be on the nipple, cry and stay awake! She finally settled early this morning. I'm so hoping tomorrows weight check goes well so I'm not as panicked about needing to wake her up. I've basically cried during almost all feeds this week. At least during the day she will open her mouth wider! The pain and slipping latch though. Hope you have a better night tonight!
Is it just me or does anyone feel nauseous during let down? It's so weird and not the greatest feeling.
I sometimes get real light headed and weird feeling. Sometimes I realize it comes on with let down when I haven't eaten enough. Maybe a snack while feeding may help?

I test my blood sugar before every feeding so I know it's not low blood sugar. Just random nausea for like a minute the. It's gone until my next let down for another minute.

not nauseous but my letdown is bordering on painful. My husband jokingly said I'm worse than a man about touching myself because when my letdown happens I tend to grab my boobs because the pressure makes them feel better.

Can we talk about burping and gas....i mean the babies, not our burping and gas issues. Lol. Does anyone else have a baby that just doesn't want to give up the burps? We have a routine that helps but in the middle of the night I want sleep. Any tips on getting those burps out? I find that if we can't get the burps out it just adds to the booty tootys.

I can never get the burps out. I'm only 4 days out so maybe that's normal? On my list of questions for the ped tomorrow.
E is 2 weeks and I've heard her burp maybe twice. I've read BF babies tend to not burp as much since they're taking in less air when eating than bottlefed babies. Now, gas from the other end is a different story.
How many wet diapers does your LO have @mrspanpan? I think those are the ones you're supposed to count.
I don't think LO is getting enough to eat. He has only had two dirty diapers today. He also sleeps most of the day. He has his first ped appointment tomorrow so we will see!
Breastfed babies can go a while without poop. Upwards of 10+ days. Does he seem constipated or just not pooping?
Has your LO passed all the meconium and had a yellow seedy looking poop yet? I gauge of DS is getting enough more so by his pee diapers than poop.
