How often does your EBF babe poop? I swear this kid has a poop in EVERY diaper. I change him well over 10x a day sometimes! It's wreaking havoc on his poor hiney too
DS pees a ton but we haven't had much poop yet. One true breastmilk poop so far. I hope he's similar to DD and it's only 1 poop a day/every other day.
+ another for constant poop and short nursing sessions. If LO is filling diapers and gaining, then length of nursing session doesn't mean much, especially if you have a fast flow/letdown. Isaac's sessions are about 5-10 minutes (typically closer to 5). He was up 1.2 lbs. over his birthweight at the 2 week appointment and a whopping 10.3 lbs total when I weighed him informally just by measuring the difference on our home scale yesterday (just a few days after his due date). Kid doesn't miss a meal.
Edit for correction - up 1.5 lbs. over discharge weight and about 1.2 lbs over birthweight.
Yep lots of poop here too! Every diaper change! Totally normal! Be aware though, ebf babies will one day taper off to 1 poop a day or even 1 poop every couple days suddenly. That is also normal. Totally freaked me out with my first. As long as they are still having lots of wet Diapers and aren't showing signs of distress they are Ok. There bodies have just figured out a new poop rhythm.
So glad I read this, my little guy eats like a champ but has suddenly stopped pooping as much and I was getting worried. He eats great and has tons of wet diapers but only about 2 dirty diapers a day, 3 if I'm lucky. We used to have one every feeding session.

Ok, I'm having all kinds of trouble this time around. My son was easy...little lady, not so much. Latch is off (only had 4ml draws on each side at LC apt), she refuses to open wide and latches completely to my nipples. I'll correct the latch, but a few sucks in her mouth slides shut again.
She wasn't gaining weight EBF, so my current plan is to nurse 15-20 mins on each side (or until she stops actively nursing) feed 2oz expressed, then pump until empty. It takes FOREVER. I feel like all I do is nurse, feed, and pump.
Last issue is supply. I'm pumping 1.5-2 oz and she seems to want more at times. Cluster feeding leaves me dipping into my freezer stash which is getting very small :/ My supply dropped when I was trying to avoid bottles since she wasn't emptying me on her own and I wasn't pumping as often as I should.
I'm taking a supplement recommended by my LC, and also chowing down on lactation cookies. I'm also nursing and pumping as much as I can, but I don't feel like anything is really making a difference. I'm going back to LC weekly until we can get the latch issues resolved.
Ugh... Why does this feel harder than it should be???

bcmomsaysso I feel ya. This is my first but the small mouth and latch slip to just nipple is leaving me frustrated and in pain. I've read so much and keep trying to correct but I'm majorly struggling.
Eta: we also had trouble with weight but she'd choke up the supplemented pumped milk. Luckily we were cleared back at birthweight, but I'm so fearful she'll lose more before our next appointment on Monday.

Not being able to maintain latch sounds like a tongue tie issue. Baby will latch correctly with the frenulum stretching out to get it in the right place, but then like a rubber band it pulls tight and baby loses their latch.
get it checked and rechecked and if current LC can't help really soon, get another opinion.

queenb, something that I just thought of with using fridge milk...and I didn't know this with my first at first, but make sure that you only swirl the breastmilk, don't shake it. Shaking breaks it down...so if you're using a bottle where the fatty milk has stuck to the side, just swirl it around to mix it up.

Every feeding. Sometimes before a feeding and in the middle of a feeding.
My kid is literally full of shit and has been since birth. But he's gaining like crazy so it's all good, even if we went through a whole pack of newborn diapers plus washing his cloth diapers every day.

I'm having the same latch issue. I latch DS on - have to adjust it - but then after a few sucks he slides off and it becomes painful (just on the nipple). He has a tongue tie that we are waiting to get clipped. It could be similar? If you look under his tongue, where the bottom attaches it looks like a the top of a heart. It's apparently a classic sign. Also, his latch is shallow and leaves my nipple looking like the shape of a lipstick - another effect of the tongue tie. He also has a lip tie. Another side effect of ties are they can be extra gassy because they swallow more air. It causes them to latch on and off because they need burps etc. I burp midway through each boob, and between them. The gassyness is also more farting too that can make babies very fussy. At your LC appointment did they look? I might get a second opinion if they said she doesn't have a tie.
And I'm also expressing after each feed to up weight gain. I caved and got my manual pump out today to see if it would speed things up (over manual expression). It did and I'm happy to see that I get at much as the harmony. So I know the feeling like all you do is focus on boobs all day.
Her feedings are messing with my head. Sometimes she nurses every hour and half to 2 hours for 20-30 minutes each. Sometimes she nurses for 6 minutes every 3-4 hours. I know she's getting enough bc she has like 10 wet and 9 poopy diapers every day but her timing is messing with my OCD self. I like patterns. She had no patterns. She's a newborn. I get that. But arrggghh. Lol.

EVENTUALLY, she will get into more of a routine...just remember right now, she is still learning how to do this stuff just as much as you are. However, once you get into that routine, she'll go through another growth spurt and f*ck it all up again! Cuz, she's a baby and that is what they do!!
Went in for a weight check and she only gained an ounce in 2 days. She is now at her birth weight. We did a weighted feed and she went up 2 ounces after feeding. They want me to wake her more often to eat, but she wakes on her own at the 3 hour mark like clock work and has plenty of wet and dirty diapers, is alert, and seems content after eating. Dh thinks all the concern is crazy and if she looks great in all areas and is gaining, I should just feed on demand and not stress out. I haven't pumped because she eats both sides, but I am making lactation cookies today and drinking mothers milk tea. I think i might agree with dh. They don't want to see us back until 8 weeks. How much should she be gaining per day?

Roughly an ounce a day or 5-7 ounces in a week for a bf baby. I'd follow your gut. How old is she? (Mobile) 2 ounces is great for a weighted feed also.

I'm just gonna go with she's her father's child and therefore will be content to live her life spontaneously, rebelling against all schedules and silly things like planning and such. Urk.

she is 17 days old. She was 7lbs,12 Oz at birth, 7lbs, 6 Oz leaving the hospital the next day, and 7th lbs 4 Oz at her first checkup (5 days). At her,14 day check up she was 7 lbs 11oz and at 16 days was 7lbs 12 oz. So she gained 8 Oz in 11 days...seems a little low...

Every 3 hours is only 8 feeds a day and that's low for such a young baby. I would wake more often, just for a day or two, trying to get closer to 9-10 feeds a day rather than 8 feeds a day. That will usually boost them up over the hump of weight gain so you can relax. Alternatively use breast compressions and massage to keep hwe nursing a little bit longer to get a bit more hindmilk to get more hindmilk in her to boost weight gain.
Weight gain should be 1/2-1 oz a day. You are above that.

Typically they want babies back to their birth weight by about the 2 week mark which she made close enough. She seems to be doing very well to me. I'd just keep an eye on things and keep doing what you're doing.
Does your hospital offer a breastfeeding support group? Most times you can get a LC to do a weighted feed for you to see how much she is taking in...

Re: return to birth weight. At my hospital it's a return to weight gain in 10 days. Also, the Drs, nurses, and LC advise every 2 hours or on demand (less than 2 hours) until return to birth weight.

This is exactly what the doctor and LC recommended for us until she reached her birthweight. Leave now spread out feedings and I'm very eager to see her weight on Monday!

We are 4 hours into our first cluster feed. Every 45 mins - 1 hour. He's downing one boob and passing out hard. Then downs the other at the next feed. I havr a hungry hungry hippo on my hands tonight!
Just spent 45 mins on the phone with a health link nurse to determine if I needed to go to emerg for mastisis . She said because I have no fever/flu-like symptoms that I don't need to see a doctor urgently by they'll send a nurse over tomorrow morning. Might just be a clogged duct, but my left breast is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than the right, tender with throbbing pain, red, and hot to the touch.
I never imagined I'd have so many breastfeeding challenges! I'm still doing okay with pumping but it's a huge time commitment and I'm having to supplement with one formula bottle a day to keep up. My little piggy is 2oz over his birth a weight 7 days after birth.
I haven't chimed in yet but figured since I have been reading and gaining so much that I should. I had a breast reduction 10 years ago and was not successful at breastfeeding at all with DD1. She got formula from the beginning and I was lucky to pump a couple ounces a day.
I have already had major success with Rose. She will be 1 week old in a couple hours and until 2 days ago she was exclusively at the breast. She is now getting bottle fed due to damaged nipples and lack of pooping. I pump every time she eats (every 3 hours) and get just around 2 ounces and she eats that much. I know I should be so happy that she is still exclusively on breastmilk but I am so sad that very soon she will be out eating my production and I will have to start supplementing with formula.
I'm not sure if this is answered in another thread, but suggestions for a regular nursing bra or tank? I'm a 36C at most. I have soft structured ones, but most of them stick up to high and come out of my shirt. Or as far as tanks are concerned, one that I wouldn't have to wear an additional bra with? I can't stand too many layers.

The bravado nursing tanks give more support and they're on sale right now. Www.bravadodesigns.com

Take a hot shower and massage the heck out of that spot on your boob. It could turn into mastitis. I know it won't feel great but it will help work the clog out.

I'm about 5 seconds from giving up and switching to formula. O destroyed my right nipple so I have been pumping only from that side for 24 hours. I've only been able to get an ounce each time and he has breezed through the paltry stash and my right can't keep up. I'm exhausted and both my nipples are killing me. However, I am terrified of complications from drying up.
