BF can be a complete mind screw!!! Baby was doing great one day and the next, he seemed to hate my boobs. After some investigating (pumping) to see what happens when he is at the boob, I discovered my left boob is seriously slow to let down and by the time it does, he is pissed off and didn't want anything to do with my slow boob. The right boob was super sore and cracked, but it was the only boob that he seemed to want. Turns out the cracking lead to bleeding and when he nursed, he got a few nice squirts of blood mixed in . I decided to pump for a few days to let my nipples heal and fed him BM from a bottle. This worked out great for my sanity as well as his. My nipples are back to 100%, he nurses well from both sides now and there was no nipple confusion.
Don't beat yourself up if you have to feed them pumped milk while you heal or get to know your boobs better. They are still getting the liquid gold and there is no ONE way to BF successfully. Good luck ladies and stuck with it and in the end it will all be worth it. I nursed my daughter for almost 1.5 years, but would have been perfectly ok with only nursing her for 6 months or a year because ANY BM is better than none. Good luck
So glad I have a minute to sit and write something in this wonderful thread. It is reassuring that others are having similar issues, even though I wish everyone was able to feed their LOs with the greatest of ease!
Where I'm at now: Evelyn is an insatiable little piglet, cluster feeding, and long feeds. Aidan is still a reluctant feeding. I can get him to latch well maybe 30% of the time, and half of those times, he's too sleepy to finish. He's also very "handsy" -- hands in his face, mouth, over my nipples, getting in the way. And I think I've noticed what's causing his poor latch, because quite often his tongue is stuck firmly to the roof of his mouth.
Our current solution is to offer him boob, and if he doesn't get going with it within 5 minutes, I pass him off to DH to be fed by a cup with breast milk that I've managed to pump and/or some formula. I really want to tandem feed because I feel like I'm spending way more time battling with nursing than I need to be, but Aidan is so difficult to get a good latch that it doesn't make sense to faff around and leave Eve waiting.
My midwife is coming over to weight them again today (on Friday Aidan was +20grams and Evie was at a standstill, grrr), so hoping to see that our current techniques are starting to work.
Anyone else prefer to just be topless at home ? While I get aquainted with breastfeeding j, I csmtbstand any fabric on my breasts if I can help it
I would, but I'm terrified of leaking without realising it. A few times now I've soaked something I was leaning against while feeding one twin just because the other boob wasn't covered properly.

Haha YA cause my ILs are here still my toplessbess is in our bedroom. Milk everywhere . Breastmilk doesn't stain like formula right ?
Thea has a little mouth. I have a hard time getting her to open her mouth wide enough to get a good latch and then actually manage to get my nipple in her mouth. And +1 to the sleepy club. She lost 10% at the hospital, but maintained her discharge weight. However they still want me feeding every two hours. She is not interested. She makes plenty of diapers so I'm not worried if we go 2.5-3.
I think things are going well enough, I just never know.
ajetter Noah has a tiny mouth too. I use the deep latch technique. Basically pinch your breast slightly at the areola and when you bring to breast have baby's chin leading and up high. It actually works very well.
My issue is I have such a slow reflex in my left side it's ridiculous. He already is an instant gratification kind of kid so it pisses him off bad. And last night I couldn't even get a let down with the pump on that side (though I probably was stressed because it was rock hard and I just wanted some pressure gone.) He lost 11% of his body weight, left the hospital at 10%, and now I anxiously wait for tomorrow morning to see if all this is paying off. I can't get him to supplement after a feed and he has plenty of wet/dirty diapers so I hope we are doing ok.
Had anyone tried out been able to feed on one side and pump the other at the same time? I'm trying to keep pumping to keep building my supply but having trouble fitting it in. With doctor appointments everyday except Wednesday this next week I'm worried about juggling it all. We noticed an increase in how much Killed is taking yesterday and I want to keep up. TIA

Rio has a shallow latch but is a strong sucker and that's made bf incredibly painful. he is also very strong and getting his hands away from his mouth long enough to properly latch is a battle. I met with an lc and she helped me figure out how to get him to latch properly but I still get nervous every time it's time to nurse. I really want to keep nursing so I'm hoping it gets better.

Ethan is a great nurser. He nurses for about 30 minutes and usually manages to get an oz or slightly over according to their scale. He still gets pretty sleepy but is improving. I'm still using the shield. I've tried a few times without it but he really struggles.
I am trying not to pump until we are into a routine and I don't want to pump during the cluster feeding phase either. I need to figure out when to start pumping to have a freezer stash for daycare come October though. I want to wait a few weeks before introducing a bottle as well, but get frustrated sometimes that I am her only food source. This is such a weird place to be in. Sorry for the rambling....
How do I know how long to offer each breast? Until she falls asleep? Sometimes she falls asleep then I pull away and she starts sucking intensely again (at my nipple !! Ow)
Also what do you do to prevent leaking milk all over your baby ? I was feeding her from the right and then her onesie was covered in milk from left breast ! Normally were both topless, but she just so happened to be dressed

I put a cloth below whatever breast I'm not nursing from.

I offer a side until he falls asleep to the point where tapping him doesn't wake him back up . Then move to wake up/burp and offer the other side.
I have to wear a bra with nursing pad on the opposite side. I leak so much and last time the leaking never went away. That goes away for some people with time.
I have a baby that doesn't want to open his mouth. He's hungry and understands where the food comes from, but he won't open wide enough to get it. he has a terrible latch. Also it doesn't help that my nipples are flat. We've been using a nipple shield and that seems to be helping somewhat, but he still only wants to latch on to just the nipple, no areola.
It's like I'm being felt up by a really drunk baby that can't quite find my boobs, his mouth, etc.
Calm.down.
This is my child. The other night he actually grabbed my nipple with his hand and then tried to latch on to his hand. Wth, kid?
Is anyone having issues with a baby that will latch and pop off several times before they actually settle to eat? I'm asking his pediatrician today because I don't know if it's a poor latch or what's making him do that. I know he has a shallow latch but this popping on and off for 5 minutes before we eat is a bit much, especially when he loses his mind every third try.

When I had dd the nurse gave me this shell thing to wear before I nursed that pulled my nipple out (seriously I had her and my nipples became non existent) for a better latch.
htuzzi324 Miles did the popping on and off for a bit. I was told it was normal. He's doing it less now though.
I'm still asking his pedi to check him for a tongue tie. 99% of the time nursing kind of hurts, like not really bad but enough I notice, and my nipple has been all sorts of misshapen, like the top is round and the bottom is flat. I trust his pedi more than the dumb dr in the hospital that wouldn't even try to open his mouth to check.
I would absolutely ask. If there is a tie have them check again after its been clipped. Miles had one at the front. Once that was clipped a poster tie was seen. We're getting that clipped tomorrow and I'm hoping it helps him be able to better drain my breasts.
Kian has a tiny little mouth and does not like opening wide. He's also grabby. I've just switched to the laid back position and he's doing better with latching this way, kind of on his own terms. Once he spots the nipple, he's on it like a 6 lb pink shark - even makes a little "attacking" noise while he does it. It's cute but also a bit scary.
My nipples are pretty beat up though from the last week of bad latch and engorgement. They also periodically bunch up painfully after or before feeding. Not sure what that's about.
I have been having MH help control the grabbiness, but when he goes back to work so does that brand of assistance. Any tips on keeping tiny hands away from sensitive nipples would be appreciated.

Liked for 6lb pink shark, not nipple pain. That shit sucks. I'm really hoping getting Miles' ties taking care of will help get rid of the pain and slight cracking I'm have going on.
I hope so too for your sake, ampaints - you're right, the pain shit does suck. They've looked at Kian for ties, but I'm thinking of having my family doctor look too now.
@aliam20 my office has 2 doctors who can. Of course the posterior tie They found they can't deal with in the office so we're going to an ent doctor tomorrow. But it never hurts to ask!
Went to the pediatrician today who basically said he disagrees with what the LC said, but called a pediatric surgeon for me and we have an appointment at 2. I don't think men have any understanding of what it feels like to have your nipple feel like it is being ripped off. Hoping this isn't just a consult though and something will get done today.
