Had anyone tried out been able to feed on one side and pump the other at the same time? I'm trying to keep pumping to keep building my supply but having trouble fitting it in. With doctor appointments everyday except Wednesday this next week I'm worried about juggling it all. We noticed an increase in how much Killed is taking yesterday and I want to keep up. TIA
I've done it a few times. You need good coordination and also need to make sure you have EVERYTHING you will need before you even sit down to nurse. It's definitely tough though.
It's almost easier with a manual pump but you need to be able to position the baby so you can hold with one arm. I don't think we reached that phase for a few weeks. But yes you pretty much need everything set up ahead of time and feed baby where pump is set. I cut holes on stretchy sports bras to use for hands free pumping and that helped with the nursing/pumping issue. But also make sure baby isn't a kicker while you nurse
We are on our way home now from the ENT where O just had both a lip and tongue tie cut. I am cautiously optimistic that our bf experience will improve from here.
In the hospital, he had a very shallow, painful latch that made me bleed, so the LC gave us a nipple shield to use until we could have his ties checked out. O is not at all a fan of the shield and would fight me to latch at the start of every feeding. He has also been almost permanently attached to my boob because I think it was harder for him to express milk with the shield.
I really hope we can make bf a more positive experience for both of us now with the ties resolved!
My boobs are bigger than my babies head and weigh more than she does and I am afraid of smothering her. Not really, but it seems like I could. We had an appointment today for her first weight check, she lost an ounce, but my milk just came in yesterday and she is at 7% weight loss, so they are not worried. I got some tips since lo is a lazy nurser. The Rn said to massage the milk out,and squeeze it whenever she stops sucking. This has helped a ton with making the last two feedings more efficient and effective.
We just got the tongue tie taken care of. He didn't touch the lip though. At this point I hope it is enough to take away the painful/shallow latch. If we still have issues, I will be begging one of the oral surgeons that my mom works with to do it - I don't care that he doesn't use a laser. She spit up a little on the way home, but it looks like it was mostly the gel they used for an anesthetic.
Also I nurse LO from both sides for 20-30 mins side basically till she falls asleep - but she doesn't seem satisfied ,Ike ten minute later I give her 20-30 mil pumped breaStmilk. Then she sleeps well. Tips before I see LC tomorrow ?

For getting off the shield...is she refusing the nip wthout it? We would have to start out with it on, unlatch FAST, and put her back in fast so she didn't realize what was happening.

We just had our most successful feeding yet! The pediatrician at the hospital had me have him suck on a binky for an hour before attempting to feed so that he could practice sucking. Then we went straight into feeding with a nip shield on. He latched better than ever and immediately started sucking! He's still very stop and go but at least this time he only popped off once and he seems much more satisfied than before

Oh that's a good idea I'll try that, yes she gets so frustrated!! She gets the saddest little frown on and cries, she tries to attach but if she does she just gets my nipple and ouch!!!
I have had small success with nipple shield on one side, then on the other side no nipple shield. But it only works some times. I just have a feeling she is sucking lots of air w the nipple shield on too.

They can get more air with it...are you getting the shield as close to your nipple as possible? I'd turn it almost inside out when I put it on to get it as close as possible...you could also try laid back nursing to help her get a deeper latch while she is still learning to go without the shield. Also, try sandwiching your nipple as much as possible to make it easier for her to get more in her mouth than just the tip. Also, if you're struggling with any of these, WRITE THEM DOWN, and take them to your LC appt tomorrow. In your sleep deprived state it will be easy to forget all your questions when you're sitting there with them.

+1 for boob being bigger than baby head. And her head is 15 inches. Dammit. I have to be careful to keep her nose clear otherwise she pops off the latch and it's a pain to get her to relatch. She. Will. Not. Open. Her. Mouth. Wide. Enough. Not until she's mad and screaming, then I can force my boob in, as long as she's not too mad. Otherwise, she's content to just lick the expressed colostrum off my nipple. And try to just latch onto the nipple.

Have you tried tickling her nose with your nipple? Sometimes when its higher than their nose, it will cause them to open wider.

I did. It doesn't. I tried inserting my finger in her mouth and tickling the roof and upper gum, and nope. I tried gently prying her mouth open, nope. Ugh. This is hard.
Ok when does the latching and unlatching 36775 times phase stop? Sometimes we get first try. Sometimes. Like once a day. The rest of the time is a battle. We just spent 20 minutes trying to latch and stay on. Why child?! Why?

Has she been evaluated for lip/tongue ties?
We just had a successful session! Laying her tummy down on top of me helped. Pediatrician comes by tomorrow so I'll ask them about any ties.

Don't forget to ask for a LC, if you feel the need. My pedi assured me her tongue tie wasn't bad, but the LC was adamant that I stand up for myself. The pediatric surgeon who cut it told me is was thick and towards the back. Have had improvement since having it done.

I'm so thankful for this thread. I haven't been on much since giving birth but hope to return as I can!
My lil girl is losing weight and on the strict eat every two hours schedule. Between waking her to eat, waking her on the breast, keeping her sucking, I'm left with 15-30 minutes between feedings. Her latch was ok but got more difficult as I think milk came/is coming in.
She really scared me today when we just couldn't wake her up for a few hours. Poor girl probably needs her sleep too. We've been doing a lot of skin to skin when feedings are impacted by sleeping.
So I'm having the hardest time getting her to stay eating. She'll latch and just content lay sit there, responding a little to stimulation, and other times she is asleep but latched and mad when unmatched. In fact, she never unlatches herself. I am hoping to see an LC tomorrow and we have another weight check.
Thanks for reading my ramblings. I always heard this was hard and I knew my emotions would be everywhere, but man this is a mind game!
Hallelujah I think we have the latch thing almost figured out. We've even had a couple of times today he's gotten latched and stayed on the first try. As for the grabby hands, I don't know if it's because Noah is so small, but I can kind of pin one arm under him and then hold his shoulder away from him with my hand so he at least can't grab my nipple (it's his favorite thing, I swear) and pull.
I have a baby that doesn't want to open his mouth. He's hungry and understands where the food comes from, but he won't open wide enough to get it. he has a terrible latch. Also it doesn't help that my nipples are flat. We've been using a nipple shield and that seems to be helping somewhat, but he still only wants to latch on to just the nipple, no areola.
The shells did nothing for me with dd, have you tried a latch assist or using pump to draw nipple out?

With DD I didn't try a shield (didn't know they existed) but one of my nipples was very flat so I would pump prior to feeding a to pull it out. I didn't have to pump long, and eventually it just stayed out.
My baby will not latch tonight and is now so worked up. This is so hard.
This was us the other night. I ended up pumping and giving her a bottle. It was the same night she had her tongue tie taken care of. Also the only time she took a pacifier.
