I went to Russia and Belarus my senior year in high school to visit children that we had hosted the previous 8 years for the Chernobyl Children Project. I caught food poisoning and ended up in a hospital. I had three adult female roommates and a toddler and they didn't let my dad come with me. They still used glass IVs, no wheels on the stands, and they didn't taupe my IV in so I couldn't move. It was like living a nightmare.
Luckily one of our translator friends left work (she's an English teacher) to come help. And she brought one of her students to keep me company, which was nice.
That is tough to follow! That sounds scary, glad it worked out.
Hmm... I was stopped at the border trying to go to Canada with a friend when I was 19. She's Swiss, so they seemed confused that we were together. It was late on July 4th and we were on a road trip. They searched the car and found a joke gift of "stripper pills" another friend had just given me for my birthday. A guard asked what they did and I insisted it was candy and he could try one. They let us go.

I got to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange - this may or may not have been a much bigger deal for my Dad and aunts and uncles than for me, but it was still pretty cool

hmmm.... something interesting you say?
When I moved from PA to FL the second time I shoved everything from my one bedroom apartment into the car I could and got rid of the rest. I drove myself and it took me about 30 hours to complete the drive. I stopped some to sleep at rest stops. Is that interesting? Maybe not...
I had to wear braces for almost three years because I wouldn't stop eating tootsie rolls and kept popping the bracket off my front tooth. Now I can't even remember the last time I ate a tootsie roll.
I spent a month in Thailand when I was 24 with my best friend. I took a leave of absence from work and left with in two months. I had a mid twenties melt down.
When I was a sophomore in HS I went with 15 other girls from my school (All girls catholic school) on a 2 week trip to China. It was an amazing trip.
As a redhead lots of people wanted to take a picture with me. I got food poisoning on the day we took a plane, bus, and boat - that was possibly the worst day of my life so far. We were lucky enough to take a 2 night cruise down the Yangtze River before the Three Gorges Damn was built. Many of the villages we visited during our day side trips are no longer there bc of the damn.

penguin129 I did the same thing! Shipped a box of clothes and blankets, stuff my 2 door coupe with breakables, sold all my furniture and drove across the country alone when I was 22. Good times

gabride2010 and jennykat it was horrifying! And stressful. We were kind of big deals in the town since the project had helped so many of their kids plus donated a lot of medical equipment... I swear every doctor in the damn hospital came to see me. We didn't tell my mom until we left Russia and got back to Belarus a couple days later because when she went several years prior she had a breakdown when she saw the hospital. Open windows in surgery rooms, coolers for their blood supply... It was bad. Also kind of ironic because I was supposed to take a tour of the hospital that day.
They tried to give me a gynecological exam with a rusty speculum after they gave me an abdominal ultrasound and figured out I wasn't a virgin, UMMM NO THANKS. My dad fought for me to go home that night, which is when they finally gave me anti nausea meds. The next day I had to go back for some more fluids. Luckily, I got to go to the children's hospital where I got a private room and the head nurse and it was a much better experience.
I should note this was a very small town in Russia, I wasn't in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Many of the residents didn't even have indoor plumbing beyond a sink.
Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota, Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, Louisiana, and Nebraska
Apparently, according to John Oliver from last week? I think? You can get a "saved the best for last" t-shirt from North Dakota...
Guess my interesting fact is I've been to North Dakota...at least three times, including about a month ago. I am sure there are other interesting things but I'm drawing a blank, so we'll go with that.
