So breast feeding isn't going well. Apparently I'm doing something wrong. LO is two weeks and still jaundiced because he isn't feeding enough and has only gained 2 ounces. I need to see a LC but it's been difficult getting help to watch the other kids. The only one I can see was the hospital LC who was very rushed and didn't take the time to explain anything while I was in the hospital. This is frustrating....
Ugh I am so sorry. Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? Are you supplementing. Jaundice is a vicious cycle. They need to eat to eliminate the bilirubin but the bilirubin makes then sleepy and not want to eat. I had to syringe feed her every 2 hrs (3 at night thank goodness) for about 3 days before she had enough energy to eat on her own and even then it took a lot of effort to get her to eat.

That's the thing he'll be at the breast all day if he could. I'm supplementing two bottles a day and letting him nurse as long as he wants/as often as he will which makes it tough to take care of my other children and find time to take care of myself. He tends to fall asleep shortly after latching onto the breast which is probably why he's at the breast all day. I stopped giving him a paci so that he'll suckle at the breast and hopefully in turn up my supply. He has a weight check on Monday to see if he has gained at all.
I have so much catching up to do. I think I want to start a bitch thread. I'm not having a great day but I don't want to complain to anyone here because I'm being waited on hand and foot. I don't want to seem ungrateful.
Hormones.
In other news, baby hasn't had any wet diapers since we brought her home. The doctor has me supplementing with formula for a couple of days. And of course she's not latching. I'm also jealous of the formula coma she goes into. I'm sad that I can't give my baby what she needs yet... And my boobs hurt really bad. I know it'll get better, but today is hard, especially since she was latching and nursing beautifully this morning.
Also, has anyone had trouble keeping their temperature up? Mine has been running low 96 to low 97. I feel ok, not great, but ok.

I'm sorry that's happening. Isn't there a type of jaundice babies can get while nursing? I pray it gets better.

DS has had it since birth but nursing can drag it out. Thank you I'm hoping he improves soon.

I was tidying up my stash of baby and nursing supplies early tonight. While I was pregnant, I had high hopes for nursing and pumping, even bought a storage pack with bigger bottles and freezer bags. Reality? I apparently produce only 10oz a day, I thought I had 20oz last week apparently I just couldn't count, I averaged 14oz per day last week.
Freezer bags for milk storage, ha!
I'm glad I only got 9oz bottles so they can hold the formula my kid will be drinking. When I was pregnant, I was trying to figure out what I'd do with the frozen milk on our return to the US, but clearly that's not going to be a problem anymore. I'm giving my bags to a friend who is able to have a freezer stash.
I seem to be getting more milk off of productive boob, but that may be a result of pumping more often (I'm bad with a schedule ). They are at least helping me keep up my calorie intake because I don't really want to eat much.

Lots of internet hugs for you. We're supplementing with formula and I'm doing mostly pumping and trying to get LO to breastfeed for a bit to get my supply up (I feel like I'm more supplementing with breastmilk). We open all the blinds and curtains in the house during the day so LO is in the sunlight and go for walks outside -- basically natural light therapy.
I do the dark, quiet room with icepacks on the back of my neck and the part of my head that hurts. Plus 800mg of ibuprofen (4 tablets is equal to a prescription level dose) and some caffeine.

Yeah I usually very my head into a pillow and covers and take meds/ caffeine too. They still suck and now it's that much harder with a baby to take care of.

I had a terrible time pumping with DD's so I'm trying to avoid it if possible. I do have a hand pump and used to have a double electric but apparently my mom got rid of it a while back (thanks mom). The past couple days I've let DS stay at the breast pretty much all day and I've noticed he is peeing and soiling more. Not sure if that's from my supply going up or the fact that he's nursing ALL day. I need to sun him more but it has been too windy and gross for walks. Where I live, wind=sand everywhere.

Why does feeding our children have to be so hard
I thought I wouldn't have to go through this with a full-term baby. Boy was I wrong. Where is this chapter in the baby books?

Recipe? Or are they all basically the same? I'm having the same problem with my appetite. That and with the other kids I can barely get time to feed myself.

I have this really good prescription medication (that's actually for seizures) that makes me high as a kite. But it takes away my migraine. Unfortunately I can't take it while breast feeding.

I wish there were better help available to you.
I lurk the breastfeeding board too, and the best advice seems to be get a private meeting with an LC, but in my area the only LC is associated with the hospital and doesn't do private appointments. In the hospital's breastfeeding class I took, we were told we could call and try to get help over the phone, or try the local La Leche League that meets once a month, or drive 80+ miles away to the nearest private LC. So I'm pretty terrified of needing help and not being able to get it either.
I did hear through a lady at church that there's a doula "in the area" who will do Skype breastfeeding help, but she's not an officially certified LC. Maybe there's someone like that you could find, either who will do remote help or who is willing to come to your house so childcare is slightly less of an issue..? *hugs*
ETA: and of course if you decide formula feeding or supplementation longterm is the right decision for you and your LO and the rest of your family, remember you're feeding your baby & that's priority #1, no matter how you do it.

Pretty much all the same. They're basically oatmeal cookies with brewer's yeast and flax seed (whole or ground) as additional ingredients.
kaydee0402 hope you spontaneously went into labor last night & made it to the hospital safely! did the snow storm happen as predicted?
Nope, no labor but we did get snow! However, the roads have been cleared according to the news and I saw the mail truck go by. And the snow didn't start until 11 pm, my induction was scheduled at 7. I still don't get the doctor's reasoning for canceling. We have to be there tomorrow at 6 am. He better not cancel on us again!
kaydee0402 how are you today? lots of snow? did you go into work?
lilyelayne thanks for asking. It is gone! wahoo. Thankfully I haven't had a multi day migraine since I was on BCP, and H agree I won't ever be taking that again.

Fine, just annoyed still lol. I hold grudges like a champ
About eight inches of snow, so my office has their liberal leave policy in effect. Since we're out here in the boonies, I just decided to stay home.
Glad your migraine is doing better! Those are terrible.
Posting & running to my 40 week OB appt. Not expecting anything out of the ordinary, but it'd sure be reassuring to hear there's some cervical progression. I did meet my in laws for Mexican for lunch, so I wouldn't be surprised if my weight gain is a little ridic

If you do have sun, you can lay him in a diaper in front of a window that the light is coming through. DS was born in late Feb when it was too cold to take him outside. He had jaundice and that's what the ped told me to do. It worked pretty well.

The way the house is set up sun only shines through the window for a couple hours and I have to hold LO right next to the window. My ped didn't really suggest putting him in the sun, but I think it was more of a concern of how much DS is eating and his poor feedings dragging out the jaundice. I got an appointment with a LC with WIC on Monday so we'll see how this goes!

I found out that I do qualify for WIC (barely) and I have an appointment to see their LC. I'm going to supplement and do as much as I can until my appointment and see how this goes. I'm trying to change my mental view on supplementing and be okay with not ebf in case ebf does not work out in the end. I'm keeping my FX that I can eventually ebf though.
Good luck sccurrier and xoxolicia and others having breast feeding struggles! I am having a more challenging time with ds2 and it is frustrating but getting better at 3 weeks.
Re pumping, I think a hands free bra (I just cut holes in an old one) is essential. Also turning the speed and suction up as high as you can stand at first to get let down and then turning it down and up again. (I never realized this with my first but we were supplementing roughly half). I want to try nursing one side and pumping the other to see if I can get more that way.
Also you can buy fennel seeds, crush them (Baggie and hammer maybe?) and steep them in boiling water for lactation tea or buy mothers milk tea online. An LC told me you need 3-5 cups/day.
