Just got out if the hospital yesterday after a hellish labor, birth story to follow. Had to supplement due to jaundice oh.. And BC I can't pee so drinking enough fluid is hard. Yep I have a catheter... Anyway, have been trying to pump but failing miserably. Ugh. I suck at this moment thing. Why is there milk in one boob but not the other? It's so swollen!
That sounds awful. So many hugs and I hope you recover quickly!
When do you guys pull the plug on comfort nursing? I just broke his latch after a 45 minute session and now I feel like "what if he still needed more?!" Even tho his sucking hadn't been accompanied with swallows for quite some time...
For me I give her five minutes. If I don't she ingests too much milk and then there is so much spit up. We go through so many bibs.
I give her my finger or a binkie instead.
I can't get him to take a paci at that point... He tends to panic.

I haven't figured this out yet but need to. She likes to comfort suck a lot which is killing me. But at the same time sometimes she seems like a snacker, nurses 10 minutes and then an hour later another 10 minutes.

Put the tip in his mouth then stroke his cheek to get him to suck. It's not the perfect system but seemed to help DD get the idea instead of choking and freaking out.
He actually takes it for a second... But then after a minute or two figures out it's not me and then starts panicking. I can really only get him to take the paci during playtime right now. If it's before or after a feeding, he freaks.

@pugsandwine, what is this playtime you speak of? I have trouble figuring out what to do with D when he's awake but not hungry.
We have a play mat and we shake some toys in her face. Also tummy time and make silly faces at her. Occasional book. She had a "favorite" toy (it's the only one she will grip) and she seems to like it when i squeak the Sophie near her.

Pretty much the same. I try to get him to follow toys with his eyes, grip things, talk to him, and do tummy time. Usually once or twice a day for like 15 minutes, then he maxes out on stimulation.
So after a couple days fighting with the nipple shield, he is adamantly refusing the damn thing, so we've been feeding without.
Good news, after 48 hours of continuous use (between feedings) of the hydrogel packs, almost all the damage to my nipples has healed! His latches still hurt like a bitch, but the painful part is shortening and shortening. He's learning!!!

10 days old.
We're 3 weeks old today and I am nipple-pain free. You'll get there! At 10 days old latching was still awful for me too.
LO was not happy last nite. Mom didn't get much sleep. BFing seems like it's getting more difficult rather than easier. His latch is so inconsistent and the pain in my right nipple hurts like a mutha. I'd thought by now, 5weeks in, we'd be ok. Feeling defeated.

I can commiserate. I was hoping that nursing would improve by this point (3 weeks 5 days) but it has stayed the same - nurse, supplement with bottle, pump with 3 diaper changes during the course of the meal. It takes forever and is so frustrating to not have made progress. I blame my supply. Stupid boobs.

Hugs, momma. Sorry you had such a bad birth experience. Your milk could still be coming in, so don't worry yet! It takes several days, especially for a ft mom. We also dealt with jaundice (stayed an extra day with triple phototherapy) and supplementation. Baby needs to eat and poop, so supplementation it is! Healthy baby is most important!

V does this at night after cluster feeding. I usually will hand her to MH and go off to get ready for bed (shower, brush teeth) while he holds little miss while she fusses. By the time I'm done, she's usually out like a light. I know that method isn't for everyone, but MH suggested this her second night and we've been doing it ever since.

Had E's 1 week check up. She's past her birth weight and has gained almost a pound since Wednesday. Makes the pain more worth it. I got a referral to a LC and a prescription for all purpose nipple cream to hopefully hold me out till I see her.

Those of you who are pumping and BFing...what sort of schedule are you pumping on? I'm trying to pump after each feeding, and in between feedings when I can. I'm getting a little concerned - after 2.5 hours, I'm only pumping about half an ounce total. I know J is more efficient than the pump and such, and I'm pounding water like it's my job. Are there other things I can do to increase my output? I'm planning on making some lactation cookies and such. I'm pumping or nursing about every 1.5-2 hours on average. Or am I being neurotic and stressing for no reason?
Anyone have any advice on weaning from the nipple shield? I try unlatching a few minutes in, ditching the shield but she will only relatch for a few seconds.

This may have been said before, but check your pump parts and settings to make sure you have the right size and speed. That can definitely make a difference.

I nurse and then if I supplement with an extra ounce of milk or formula, which I almost always do, I will pump after. After she eats, I only pump out a half an ounce to an ounce. I try to sneak in an extra pump session once throughout the day. My LO eats every 3-4 hours. I have tried everything under the sun to get my supply up: fenugreek, mothers milk plus, oatmeal, lactation cookies, power pumping, but nothing really seems to help me. I know that women have had success with those things, so it's worth a try.

jewel441, I noticed with side lying K doesn't struggle so much with my letdowns, too. And so much less spit up afterward. Exclusive side lying at home it is! (Well, once my neck flare-up subsides...)

As far as I can tell I have the right size parts and such. I'm experimenting with speed (Medela PISA), so hopefully I can find the magic spot soon.

As much as it sucks, it's reassuring to know I'm not alone in supplementing with formula after nursing. J usually drinks 2-3 ounces after nursing. If I pump right after nursing, I just get a dribble - maybe 1/4 of an ounce? I hate how much of a mind fuck BF is. We were going to go do a weigh & feed today, but little man was having none of that.

By pumping and BFing do you mean you are pumping to have a stash or that you are BFing as well as supplementing with pumped BM? Just clarifying as I have advice for the former but not the latter. No matter what you are doing, you are doing an awesome job for your baby :-)

Yes to both. I'd love to build a stash so we can stop using formula to supplement, and to start storing for going back to work, etc.
Why does my kid insist that MOTN feedings are suddenly party time?! It's bad enough he is cluster feeding, I didn't want to add let's keep mommy up to all hours. I swear if he wasn't so cute I would really hate him.
