Why does my kid insist that MOTN feedings are suddenly party time?! It's bad enough he is cluster feeding, I didn't want to add let's keep mommy up to all hours. I swear if he wasn't so cute I would really hate him.
Just when you are at your wits end they sucker you back in with a smile.
By pumping and BFing do you mean you are pumping to have a stash or that you are BFing as well as supplementing with pumped BM? Just clarifying as I have advice for the former but not the latter. No matter what you are doing, you are doing an awesome job for your baby :-)
Yes to both. I'd love to build a stash so we can stop using formula to supplement, and to start storing for going back to work, etc.
I think I mentioned this to pugs, but I've read (and learned at breastfeeding group) that if you're pumping on top of BFing to get ready for going back to work (rather than pumping while you're away at work), it's more effective to pump once or twice a day, about an hour after a morning feeding. This way you can satisfy LO with one or two early feeds, but you have more milk in the morning. I do this every other day and can get 3-4 oz per boob. We feed one to LO for practice that day and put the other in the freezer. Also, I hate the pump, so the less often I have to use it the better!

Ugh! I know! I swear in that instance he is like his father. The man can charm the pants off anyone and it looks like superman is going to take after him. God help me!

It is totally normal to not get more than 0.5-1 oz when pumping - your baby is getting everything it needs and your body isn't really tuned to produce excess milk! To increase pump output play with the settings, make sure your flanges are properly fitted, and relax!! Stress always decreased my output. Power pumping worked well for me - sit down with your pump and a glass of water and pump for 10 minutes, take a 10 minute break, and repeat this cycle 2 more times (an hour total). If you can handle a MOTN pump do that - milk production is highest overnight. And be patient with baby - your breasts are never truly empty so although baby might be frustrated at the slow flow after a pumping session that is exactly what you need to stimulate milk production! If time is an issue for you try pumping one side while baby is eating on the other. Still offer and feed from the breast you pumped as well. Alternate which breast you pump.
I hope those help! Formula supplementing is okay too. Breastfeeding can be so darn stressful!!

Thank you! All of that is definitely helpful and I'll be trying things this week. BF is definitely stressful - I wasn't prepared for that at all!

So DS had the stomach flu all of yesterday and the day before. Today I had it and now I am really worried about Evie catching it. She is exclusively breastfed. I know she has been exposed because before we knew, Isaac was touching her and giving her kisses. Which at the time was so sweet. I am so scared she will have it. Will breastfeeding help? I heard that when a baby is sick, we make the antibodies to help that illness. She is not even 2 weeks yet. It has been a nightmare.

Keep nursing. She will get your antibodies. Make sure you keep hydrated.

+1. This is pretty much what I have been doing as well.

This.
I hAd the worst flu when DD2 was super young. Like leave me in bed to die bad. H took care of her and did a great job, but when she was hungry, he grouchy her to me. She didn't get sick.
1. Wanting to feed on both sides during a feeding?
2. Emptying the boob during a feed?
I'm seeing the LC today (it's the NP at our pedi's office so it's a dual checkup/LC appointment) so I'm going to check but I feel like I'm doing it wrong. I know she is fine because I can see her cheeks filling in already and she seems satisfied after 5-15 minutes on a boob (i would say average feed time is 7 mins). But I'm still worried.
And I'm pumping once a day to empty fully because damn. And I also have a hard spot in one blob that I'm worried is going to turn into mastitis. Another thing to ask the LC about. Pumping helps it feel less full and I've tried massage/heat/hand expressing in the shower/cold compress but it's not going away completely.

This is good to know since I woke up piling at 5:00. 2 year old DS is also puking. I just want to crawl in bed and die.

1. I forced her to around week 2 by cutting her off one side and putting her on the other. took a day or so to regulate milk production. 2. Usually she does but sometimes she Doesnt. When she doesnt, do not pump the excess, and that should help your body understand how much baby is eating. Sounds like your baby is getting plenty if you are not empty at the end if a feed. 3. For the lump, sounds like a clogged duct. Is it painful? Sounds like you are doing the right things. Also make sure you are drinking lots of water, pump/nurse often, and try these (someone on here recommend, and they are wonderful!) - www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00AV9P44C/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?qid=1459959520&sr=8-1&keywords=lansinoh+3+in+1+therapy&pi=SY200_QL40 I have had tons of clogs and have never gotten mastitis, so try not to worry too much!

I was told to do block feeding bc of my over supply/heavy flow and it's helped a lot. So she never gets both sides. I just keep giving her the same side in like a 3 hour window (so usually 1 feeding but sometimes 2 in the evening). It also helps her empty the boob more fully. It took a few days to regulate to that but it's helped tremendously.
The LC told me that im basically doing everything right and that its okay to pump once a day to empty myself/create a stash for H to feed her. She recommended not pumping more than once a day so that my supply will eventually regulate itself. And that it sounds like I have a plugged duct and to keep doing what I'm doing there to work it out.
I'm really lucky because she latches well and my nipples are almost entirely fine now- pumping is more uncomfortable.

Jack Newman's all purpose nipple cream is magic. If u have sore nipples I highly recommend asking for a prescription. I've been using it for like 24 hours and my nipples already feel a lot better.
Guise, W is finally over 7lbs!! He gained 12oz in a week!! This was our first week strictly on the boob without any supplementation. Im so freaking happy!!

I 2nd this, but damn, that stuff must be made of diamond dust. It is so expensive!

Yeah it wasn't covered by our health insurance which didn't surprise me. I didn't find it was too expensive here, $27 and I am sure I won't use it all.
For severe nipple days, I also recommend the Medela Shells that let your nips breathe without touching anything. They have holes to let them air out and a little sponge at the bottom that collects any leakage. They are awesome and I just wish I'd started using them sooner.

Wow, mine was $70. Also not covered by insurance. I'd do anything for the nips these days though!

I haven't used it this time but I did with my first and it was magic! U was better within a couple of days. Mine was $40.
All morning I've smelled sour milk and couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I changed my breast pads, wiped the baby's neck and changed her, checked my clothes, everything. I just pulled up the sleeves of my sweater and found a quarter sized patch of dried spit up on my arm. Yuck.

We're heading to an LC this afternoon. Hoping to figure out what I can do so J doesn't have to depend on formula as much as he is. And his latch on my right boob has gone wonky or something in the past day, so hopefully that can get figured out too.
Bonus good news - since adding a small Gatorade once per day and moving pumping around a bit, I'm now getting almost a full ounce when I pump! Woohoo!
