sunshineshades I still do both sides almost every feeding. He jumped up from 30-40% in weight since his last visit so I'm not too concerned with not getting enough hind milk.

She's gained a ton of weight - 3lbs in a month. The nurse suggested she was getting too much foremilk because she gets green poop and she's fussy/gassy. She said the poop didn't really matter but getting more hindmilk might help the fussiness

What's the consistency of her green poop?
It changes. But usually no different than when it isn't so green. Seedy usually sometimes frothy. I know it could also possibly be dairy related but I'm hoping changing how I feed her helps instead. Seems to be a little less spit up so far. Otherwise I'm going to try cutting out the milk I have with my cereal every day and start with that. It's pretty much the only dairy I regularly eat (not counting hidden dairy in some things).
So we just finished with our LC home visit, which I would highly recommend to anyone having any issues (it's covered by insurance). We did a weighed feed where she was futzing around and barely latching like usual first feed on a side and she took in 3.5 oz. the LC (and I) couldn't believe it. It really did not look like a good feed so you never know. The LC said that its ok for me to try and push her to go longer between feeds since she is taking in that much (I didn't want to do that if she was only taking an oz or 2). Hopefully that will help with night time and getting her back to sleeping longer. She also suggested a method called full drainage block feeding to help get my supply re-regulated (over supply). Basically as a 1 time deal, first thing in the AM before you feed baby you pump all the way on both sides until you are just dripping not flowing. Then right after you feed the baby, then proceed with block feeding after this. You don't do it everyday, it's just a one time thing. She thought it would really help us with the fore/hind milk and think it will help her go longer between feedings so we are gonna give it a try tomorrow!
Just curious... How much do people typically get when pumping (I guess to replace a feeding would be more analogous to what i did). has anyone tried to "pump until empty"? How much did you get...
I tried this AM as per the LC's instructions, I am so not used to the pump though I always feel like I'm doing it wrong. I got 9 oz, then fed LO from both sides as per the instructions. I am not sure I took enough out with the pump before I fed LO though... Guess I'll see if this helps.

I know you're working on oversupply, but boy am I jealous. If I pump to replace a feeding (15 min), I get 2.5 oz, and that's both sides. Thus, the supply problems.

Um yeah jewel441 9 oz is insane. Why is she having you pump again?
I typically get 4-5, but I never have pumped until empty first thing in the am with her. I've pumped until empty at night once after being away from her for 6 hours, and I got 5.5 oz.

I typically pump 10-15 minutes which is how long it takes LO to eat on one side. I don't pump until empty. I get anywhere between 6 and 10 ounces depending on when the last time I fed or pumped. If it's been awhile, I do pump longer just to get more hindmilk. But I'm down to only pumping once in the morning after the am feed and then whenever I miss a feed.

minae01 hugs! I hope that your supply increases!! All around BF is so complicated, hard and weird (also wonderful). I hope it gets easier for all of us!
rachelilly23 it's a one time thing not everyday. It's a method for addressing oversupply called full drainage block feeding. I linked the study in my previous post about it, but basically you pump as much as you can both sides first thing AM, then feed LO right after both sides. Then do block feeding starting with 3 hours before switching sides, feeding on demand. It's a newish method for dealing with over supply that people have had a lot of success with... you just keep going with the block, you don't do the pump thing again unless you are still getting engorged after a few days. If you are you can repeat the drainage and make the blocks longer. One person in the study had to go to 24 hour blocks, which is insane!!
When I pump one side in the early morning while DD nurses on the other, I get 2.5-4 oz. When I pump to replace, it's usually in the evening and I get 2-3 oz on both sides. The earlier I pump, the more I get.

I've only pumped about 4 times. I get 4 oz total in 10 minutes. That's about as long as I've been able to pump because E always manages to start screaming in the middle of my pumping session. I also know I'm not doing it right because I just pick a random time of day when I have the time. I'm home for a year though so only pumping for a small stash and to get her used to taking a bottle every once in a while.

If I get an ounce and a half combined is a good pumping session. But I'm not the norm, so there's that.

My supply has been awful and is only getting worse. It makes me so sad. I feel so guilty giving him formula. It's nice to know I'm not alone with the supply problems.

I feel ya, sister. The absolute most I've ever gotten was 80ml (roughly 2.75 oz) total from both sides. On the norm, 2 oz is a good session.

You're definitely not alone! J is a formula/breast hybrid, but I'm pretty sure most of his nutrition comes from formula.

I pump at 7am for 5min every morning because DS wakes at 630am and V likes to sleep in til 9. If she's fed recently (as in, from 5am+) then I generally get ~4oz. If she hasn't eaten in a while, then I can get ~8oz total (like today).
This is very different from DS. With him I only got maybe 4oz from both sides after pumping for 20min, but he was also a far less efficient nurser.

Definitely not alone. We have had commonalities from the very beginning, Kimmy!

I fed DS2 at the sitter's this morning, then pumped at work less than two hours later. I got a touch over 7oz. Prior to my return to work, I had been pumping 4-6oz about 30 minutes after a morning feeding.
Has anyone else still not had success with bottles? We had been trying pretty. consistently without much success but also without protest. Mostly she just played with it and had no association with food. One time she drank an ounce from a tommee tippee bottle. We took a break when we hit a rough patch. We decided to try again today and this time I think she knew exactly what it was and did not care for it. She drank maybe 1/4 an ounce in like 20 min of trying and intermittent protests (H feeding her me upstairs) and then we called it bc she was too distressed. As soon as I was holding her she threw up so freakin much! I am not sure this is worth it but I feel unable to leave her bc I don't want her to be hungry so I struggle with even leaving. I have only been away from her more than an hour once, for my 6 week PP appt. I want to get my hair cut this week so that will be the second time. If she naps she can go 3 hrs between a feeding (even though she doesn't do it frequently except at night) so logically I know she will be fine but it still stresses me out. But my hair is out of control.
Anyway... Not sure if anyone else is still struggling with the bottle. The doc said we could try a faster flow nipple bc my flow is fast. But I don't think that will work until she figures out how to latch on and suck.

How old is she? E was really really slow when we first started a bottle. Like I wold think she must have drank a couple oz and I'd look and it would be half an oz. She still is pretty slow and I make her take a lot of breaks to burp which pisses her off. Are you sure that isn't why she gets upset? Since she threw up it coild be she was upset that she had a gas bubble. E takes in a lot of air with the bottle. I can hear her unlatch over and over while eating. So when I burp her she is screaming because she wants the bottle but also she tends to give a huge burp too so I think waiting for that to release hurts.
Have you tried giving her the bottle? Dd1 used to take a bottle better for me than dh. Opposite of the norm lol. With her we also would walk around and sing while feeding helped.
Maybe a different bottle type? We eventually did every day I would pump once and bottle once in order to get dd1 to take a bottle. I had slacked on it earlier and then went out twice for like 5 hours when she was 5 months old and she cried and didn't eat the whole time. So after that it was daily bottles.
sunshineshades she is 10.5 weeks. She definitely took in a ton of air which is why she threw up, that's the first time that has happened at the bottle. She hasn't really figured out how to latch on the bottle or if she does get latch she doesn't stay that way.
She was mostly just tonguing it according to H, but I have seen the same thing when I've done it. Today is the first time she has gotten upset at the bottle, the H only one was the 3rd time today we had tried. I tried at the beginning of a feeding but she was super upset so I fed her some and then tried again and she was super upset and took in none, so I just finished feeding her. Then at her next feeding H tried solo and I think maybe he was more pushy than I so she took in all the air while she was trying... I wasn't in the room so I didn't see. We have tried 3 different bottles, this was the one she came the closest with so that's whey we tried it again, but it's been like 2 weeks since we last tried.

@jewel41 I'd say keep at it. Like a few days at least a week. It sucks because it's so much easier to just bf I know. But you'll really be wanting the ability to get away I think. Plus also convenient for things like long car rides to just give a bottle in the car seat instead on having to pull over. We have a 5 hour drive coming up so we've been practicing lol.
That being said I think some babies just don't take a bottle. At least once she's on solids it will be easier for you to get away because she can just eat food and drink some water if you are gone.

jewel441, I'd say keep at it. D is almost 12 weeks and he just started getting really good at taking a bottle when H and I went out of town without him last weekend.
Is it warm? D was very particular about the temp of his bottles at first. They had to be pretty warm or he'd fuss, refuse or just nibble at it. Somehow, I've gotten him to take cold bottles now, which is much easier if we're not at place where it can be warmed.
Another thing I tried was to put some breastmilk on the nipple. And a nipple with a faster flow definitely helped us but we have to make sure we burp often, like every ounce.
Just be persistent. It's a lot of trial and error, but I'm sure LO will get it.

EJ is terrible with bottles. She's taken 3 bottles. She gags and screams when someone tries to give it to her. We've had friends try, my husband, and my mom. The biggest problem is her gagging. The nurse had a hard time with her oral vaccine because of the gagging. We've tried Dr. Brown bottles and Munchkin bottles. The Munchkin ones seemed to so better so we'll keep trying with that a few more times. It's hard to find time for a bottle in the evening with a toddler too. I was told that her gag reflex would get better as she grows and gets older. We're just going to have to be diligent about continuing to try this week.

For those with LOs who are gagging with the bottle, a woman in my bf group had a problem getting her son to take a bottle. She found that advent makes a super slow flow preemie nipple. You have to order it online as its not sold in sores. Using that, a warm bottle, and her not being in the house her LO finally took a bottle. The slow flow really helped a lot. Now her son takes bottles no problem, but it took a lot of trial and error to get it right.
