I almost never get that upset when a celebrity dies. But today this one really is getting to me.
I am from (and live in now again) the Minneapolis area. My parents went to over 20 Prince concerts in their 20s when he played at First Ave in the 80s. I grew up on his music. He was probably one of the first real musicians I could even identify as a child. My parents were super fans, to put it lightly, lol. So I became one too. I saw him in concert about 12 years ago and he played most of his old stuff. It was by far the best concert I have ever seen and probably will ever see at this point. I was crying during his 45 minute long encore that he did of Purple Rain. It was just incredible.
So needless to say, it feels more personal, ha.
Fellow Minnesotan!! I am not as much of a super fan as you, Willow, but man, he was an incredible performer and his fan base was so wide, it just feels like a huge loss to the arts/music community. The Current has been playing his music all day. When Purple Rain came on, my waterworks started flowing.
Yes but your homeowner's coverage should come in. Insurance girl here haha!
I told my dh they could sue, but he didn't believe me! Good to know!
This blows my mind. Such a different culture. I feel like this just does not happen in Canada. If someone sued me because they wiped out on my lawn i'd charge them with trespassing. Except not. Cuz I'm small town Canada and that shit don't happen lol

Good point! I never thought about bringing up trespassing if someone tries to sue.

FYI, for this to be a viable countersuit, you need to post NO TRESPASSING signs on your property.
Super sad it comes to that, but insurance sucks and they try to get out of paying for anything they don't "have to."

He is certainly ranked among one of the most legendary in music history, I think. He was so hugely influential. I got a little defensive on a different board I'm on earlier when someone commented that they didn't get the outpouring of grief and had to admit to myself that it's just different when you're from here. It's more personal, and Prince showed such a dedication to his hometown roots. Never moved away, showed graciousness to his legions of fans here, consistently recruited local talent to perform at Paisley Park and at his shows, partied amongst the masses back in the 80s, etc.
My mom was telling me tonight how she'd go partying every weekend downtown Minneapolis and often would be in the same dance groups on the dance floor with Prince. They weren't friends or anything but he occasionally would throw a nod or "hello" her way as if to acknowledge he recognized her as a regular.
He bridged the gap of so many things. Black and white, masculine and feminine, pop, rock, r&b and funk, diva, smooth, gracious, philanthropic, inventive, I could go on. There really will never be another like him. He's the music royalty that Kanye thinks he is but never will be.
