I made the assumption an LC would come around and see me like they did last time. Nope. He's nursing and latching, but it's painful, so I'd like some confirmation that we're still doing a good job.
I had to threaten to not ever leave the hospital to get one to come see me!

I hope you get one in to see you! Everything I've ever been told says if it's painful but they look like they have a good latch, then they aren't latching deep enough. Make sure the chin is closer to your body than their nose, so their head is angled up a little bit. It also helped me a lot while they're so tiny if you cup your breast with one hand so it's not as round- especially if you're full. That will also help make sure enough is getting into their mouth. I hope that helps/ makes sense!
Anyone else's babies eat for short amounts of time? The little dude almost never nurses more than 10 minutes at a time and very often won't take the second breast. DD ate 20 minutes a side, both sides, every time so I'm not used to this! Her latch also sucked and we needed a shield, so maybe he's just more efficient? Plenty of wet and poop diapers and he gained 3oz after leaving the hospital so I'm thinking it's ok, but pedi seemed to want him to eat longer and take both sides. She noticed a very slight tongue tie and suggested clipping it but I don't know if it's necessary since he latches well and with very little pain.
mrsw26 we go back and forth some days he eats 10 min only one side but eats every 2 hrs other says he eats about 15 on both sides and goes every 3-4 hours... I think it's prob normal and if he's gaining weight I wouldn't worry about it!
mrsw26 Cam rarely takes both sides at the same time. Often he'll nurse 5-10 mins and fall asleep. You're not alone! And as long as he's gaining I won't worry about it.
DS2 is also a quick eater. 12-20 minutes usually only one side. If both sides no longer than 25 minutes combined. He also has plenty of wet/poop diapers and is gaining so I'm not concerned.

This is us too. Today has been both sides (unusual since he has major side preference...) with more time between feeds. Last night was one side for short durations with lots of wake ups.

Am I the only one with a marathon eater? Like, an hour on a boob - sometimes doing both (MOTN sessions)? He's sucking the whole time, but not very strongly and may be sleeping at the same time. He's getting milk - I can see it when I pull him off and when I pump I have a lot. #lazyeater?
Ugh since DS has such a huge preference for sides that nipple is getting really sore. I've been using cream a lot but it's still getting raw.
I wish he'd take the other side more consistently. At this rate I feel like I'll need to introduce bottles of breast milk sooner than I thought just to give that side a break
teraiin, Can you slide him to the other side? Hold him the same way but just slide her to the opposite side. Might need somone to help you position him.

Cam often falls asleep on the boob for long periods of time. He sucks some and often dribbles milk but I don't count it as time spent eating since he's not really getting much by doing that. I only count the time he's actively eating.

I've tried and he just pulls away and cries after a few latching attempts. He will take it if he's starving but otherwise refuses. I've tried the cradle hold and the football hold and he still refusing most of the time. The lactation consultant was puzzled as well. She ended up labeling him as stubborn and advised me to pump on they side since he won't feed from that side.

DD was like this. She got down to 20 minutes a side eventually. She didn't get more efficient until she was about 10 months old, and then it was 15 per side. She had a slight tongue tie that we didn't get clipped, but I'm wishing we did because it might've helped.

We clipped DD tongue tie but the LC thinks it needs further release. She's gaining well she just eats so slowly. I wasn't going to mess with it but now I'm having doubts.

We just had DSs follow up appointment. His latch is beautiful and he's getting plenty of milk. He apparently is just finishing up his nursing sessions by bashing my nipples. I can't wait until they toughen up.
Silly ftm question... How do u know to offer the other side? E will go for 20-30 mins on one side. She usually just falls asleep. Should i be switching sides half way through?

After she finishes one side, I burp her then offer the other. Sometimes she's interested, others she's not.
Anyone have tips on how to stay awake for MOTN sessions? I came dangerously close to dropping her after falling asleep mid nurse last night. I've been playing on the Kindle but I still fall asleep sometimes.

No advise on staying awake but figuring out how to do side-lying nursing saved my sanity both last time and this time. We didn't do any cosleeping with A bit I still brought him to bed and did the side lying nursing for the MOTN sessions. I'd try to stay awake but at least if I did drift off he wasn't in any danger of falling. This time, Cam refuses to sleep away from me at night. I can put him in his cradle and he's awake less than 5 mins later screaming. So we're cosleeping and of course doing the same thing. It took us a little longer to figure out how to do it well with A. He was close to 2 months old before we got good at it. But it was so worth it!
