Thanks for starting this!
We just switched from newborn flow nipples to the 1m+ nipples (they'll be 4 weeks old Wednesday) and feedings are going faster so that's a plus. They want to eat every 3 hours, so once I've fed both and changed them and gotten them back to sleep we have about 1 1/2-2 hours to sleep or be a functioning human again.

housecarder, I can't imagine all that goes in to feeding twins. Even with formula, it's a ton of work! Do you make the bottles ahead of time and warm them?
Dd is eating every 3-3.5 hours, 2 to 3 oz each. We just switched her to Enfamil Gentlease (generic), a lot less gas and she goes back to sleep way faster. I'll take it!

Susan0utLoud, we don't premake them, but at night I will have the water in them and keep those and a formula dispenser by my bed so all I have to do is dump in the powder and feed rather than get up and make them.
We premake ours for the nightt. We liked that trick with ds. Cuts out some awake time. Haha
We will start soon. I have a Dr Browns pitcher from ds that we used to make a days worth at a time. For now I just measure the water and add the formula since they're so small.

That makes sense! I should have gotten the dr brown pitcher!

I might premake them when they move to the nursery but for now I like that I don't have to go to the fridge and turn on lights. I don't even get out of bed.

I think I was half asleep when I read this the first time.

lostinfaith225 did you say that you use similac sensitive? Do you like it? Finn is pretty gassy/clingy but I don't think it's the same milk intolerance DD had because she is consolable and burping/farting/gripe water helps. I'm wondering if switching would still help and since we are on our last can of the case we bought this would be the best time to switch.

This is a good idea!!!
Yeah I have 2 of these in different colors (they are on different amounts right now)
And then I usually make 2 bottles of water each. The pack and play in our room has a hanging basket that clips on so I store them there. It makes MOTN feeds less awful when I don't have to actually get up.

What are you using now? We use Enfamil Gentlease (generic) and it's been fantastic for dd who was super gassy in regular similac and Enfamil.

We are on similac advance since that's what they started in the hospital. I know I used a milk free Emfamil for DD but I don't think I need lactose free, just a gentle formula of some type.

Enfamil regular worked wonders for my first who was gas central on similac advanced. This time the gentle Enfamil has worked best for Dd. I go samples of the gentle Enfamil, not sure how or why but I'm glad they were here.

I've been told since I have twins if I can get a letter from my pedi or OB that Emfamil will send me a free case of formula. Might be worth trying.

Yes, we do use the similac sensitive. I used it with ds....he was always constipated. So far dd is doing well on it. She's been burping like a champ.

I have 3 of these containers from ds, I might try your method out!

Bumping this back up for a question. How do you mix your bottles without shaking them? If I swirl gently I get clumps still. If I shake well I get super foamy bottles and I think that's part of the reason why they are so gassy (seriously, both are having grown man farts all the time).
I don't remember it being a huge issue with the other two, but maybe I just didn't think about it. I was just looking at the bottles during a feed today and it hit me that it might be a contributing factor.

housecarder, I remember when my mom FF my sibs she would stir it with one of those glass cocktail mixing stirrers instead of shaking. My youngest sis had horrible gassiness and I think that helped reduce the amount of bubbles. Also, tapping the bottle lightly on a hard surface would probably help dissipate bubbles.

I think I'll try stirring them with something and tapping. When H makes them he shakes them so hard they are half foam and it takes forever to settle. Not really ideal for when babies are screaming to eat now.

Using something to stir instead of shake should help. We have the Dr. Browns formula pitcher and if you don't pump it vigorously there's hardly any foam. Also, if you pre make the bottles they have a chance to settle. Not helpful if you want To make bottles on demand, I know.

My hospital recommended using the pre-made formula in the cans to start. At what point did you ladies switch over to powder?
Also, I know we're only 24 hours in, but DS2 is super lazy with eating and I can barely get him to eat half an oz in a sitting... Any tricks to get him to eat more? I always do a diaper change to wake him up, and tickle his chin to encourage eating.

I switched to powder after a week. We were changing to a gentle formula anyway, and the powder was way cheaper. Ready made is easier but more expensive.
As for being lazy, maybe baby isn't hungry for more than what he's eating. Diaper change, leaving feet exposed during feeding and tickling as needed, turning the nipple in his mouth to get him sucking again. If none of that works, I would assume baby is full. But I'm not a doctor, so maybe ask the pedi?

We switched after a week, but that was because we went thru our supply. Haha I don't think it matters. I.e. Lazy.... Unbutton sleeper, leave in wet diaper, burp, wipe a cold wipe on belly, turn light on,

When the pedi saw him at the hospital, he told us that L should be having 8oz in 24 hours, or 1 oz every feeding. But the nurses seemed to think it was fine that he was only doing 1/2 an oz. at this point. So we were confused. I think I'm going to offer the bottle every two hours instead of every three to increase overall intake.

housecarder, how much are your girls eating at a time now? My ds is 5 weeks and wants more than 4oz the last day or so. I feel like that's too much, but if she's hungry I'm going to feed her.

Mine slowed to 3-4 oz per feeding. Typically I will increase the amount if they are consistently eating it all and then acting hungry around 2-2.5 hours later. Evie is hitting that point. I think around 5 weeks they went through a growth spurt too. He could be wanting to sleep longer and have fewer big meals instead of so many little ones.
But it really depends on how much they weigh and how often they are eating on how much to give.
I think the formula they say to use is 2.5 oz per 1lb they weigh per day. So a 10lb baby should be eating 25 oz a day. If they eat every 3 hours that is 8 feedings at a little over 3oz per feeding. My girls aren't quite 10 lbs, but they also sleep longer in the evening and night so I know 4 oz per feeding is getting them what they need.

My girls were lazy at first too. We would strip them and change and wipe them when they would fall asleep to wake them up. It's such a shame to wake a sleeping baby.

This is helpful, thank you. I am consistently getting 4 hour stretches now so not eating as often. I was thinking growth spurt too. I have no idea how much she weighs. I will try to weigh her later.
I said ds above but it's my dd. I'm not used to having a girl. Lol
