I love 3 day weekends. We did nothing today and I'm not too worried about it since we have 2 more days. We may try to get downtown to enjoy DC before it turns to Trumptown tomorrow or Monday.
Today's party was at a house and so casual and easy, I loved it. They gave out board books as favors which was sweet and thankfully got us out the door without a scene, I was a little anxious after yesterday.

wineallthetime, yes, I'm sure it sucks not being able to smell anything. I just meant of all the smells I would be cool with never smelling again, cat urine is top 5.

We ended up at the Met. We had dinner at a diner in the city. Nothing fancy, just a regular diner. I thought of the discussion we had the other day. MH and I each had a turkey club ($19.95 each), we shared a side of fries ($6.95), my kid had the kid's grilled cheese ($10), kid's chicken fingers were $15 (glad he didn't want them!), drinks were around $5 each with no refills. A really simple diner meal with no frills/no cocktails ended up being $80. Which is probably why I'm not surprised when a omelet breakfast right outside the city is $19, because it almost looks like a deal, lol.

Living in a VHCOL has ruined me. And my wallet.
Omg. If we are spending $80, I'm getting cocktails! It's amazing how regional things are. I'm probably in the middle and your prices make me anxious!
wedding - I saw your post before the poof but didn't have a chance to respond. I have a very similar struggle with MH and having 2 has only amplified it. He is an amazing dad, but he always puts work first. So now when he is 'present' it's always with S. He hasn't spent more then 1 hour alone with B yet and has never once been alone with both boys when they are awake. Now because of that, he doesn't really know B which makes me sad.

Sorry, I think I got defensive over nothing. I think I'm in a slightly crappy mood!

I think you just kind of get to a point where you're dulled by them. Like, I laughed at $20 turkey clubs, but what are you going to do? We weren't at some fancy place, that's just what people get away with charging, so we shut up and pay it.
I guess the upside is when we went to Bora Bora, everyone told us to bring a Ton of money because everything is so expensive there. We actually thought everything was priced really reasonably and ended up buying a lot of great bottles of wine and going to amazing restaurants. I don't think we have gone anywhere where we really have gotten sticker shock because we live in such an expensive place. So when we travel, we don't feel guilt about indulging a bit ... because we would probably be paying the same prices (or more) at home.

No worries. I should have been more sensitive to the fact that you don't get to smell anything. Good or bad.

I thought about it last night too. Pizza and salads were 60 with tip.
Lol, oh hi, twin. Salad, one pizza, a pasta, a slice of cake, two beers, a milk and a soda was well over $100 last night at our favorite hole in the wall that has wall to wall carpeting. Again, nothing fancy, just a local place that is charging what everyone else does.
@cher, how'd c do at the met? If next week's city afternoon goes well, I'd like to get Josie down there a bit more.
ETA: although, she had a meltdown today after 45 minutes in the grocery store, so maybe it's not too promising.
He actually did really well! We meant to the Museum of Natural History but we parked on the east side by accident (we always lived on the east side) and then we figured, might as well go to the Met. He really liked looking at the statutes. But it's such a mad house on weekends and strollers are pretty frowned upon that I think it was a lot for him with all the walking and people. Security actually told us he wasn't allowed on H's shoulders so he got pretty tired.
They really don't have many paintings, more artifacts, but he liked the gratuitous nudity and the things that looked like crocodiles. I think we're going to take him back in two weeks to try Museum of Natural History.
I would like to go in during the week because it won't be so crazy busy but I prefer to drive and weekday traffic is a nightmare.
@cher, Sometimes I wonder why we've stayed here for so long. I don't like the cold. And it's costly. I guess the trade-off is close to some pretty great things in the city and good schools.
My town's schools aren't even good. Highest property taxes in the country though, lol.
That why I'm making an effort to get into the city more. That's our advantage in my mind. I went in twice this week and hopefully when it warms up, I can make it an ongoing thing.
I've been wanting to take S to the museum of natural history for a while but just haven't done it. I think he'd love it but worry he would get too rambunctious for a non kids museum
Cherhorowitz since your town's schools aren't that great, do you plan on sending him to private school?
Yes. MH and I both went to private schools our entire lives, so our kid will probably do the same. Nothing against public school, it's just what we know. We both went to same-sex high schools and we feel pretty strongly about our kid going to one as well.

The museums are so insane on the weekend, I guarantee no one would care.

Hmm maybe we'll try then. I've promised S a special day when MH gets back from this crazy long work trip. I was thinking Liberty Science Center in Jersey but maybe we'll do that instead.

We have done museums in DC and j has loved them. Natural history and Air and Space. We bring stroller to limit walking and only let him out when ready to explore/not too crowded. His school went on a field trip to American History which I was bummed to miss, but sounded intimidating with a class of 2 year olds!

I'm pearl clutching at 2 sandwiches with fries, drinks, and a grilled cheese for $80. I have always lived in southern states, so that is definitely high for me.
We ended up going to the diaper keg tonight and we stayed later than we should have. Then I made the horrible decision to let DH stay and catch a ride with someone else later. H cried for daddy the whole way home, then insisted on her whole bedtime routine, and then cried until I went and yelled at her. I was nursing S so I couldn't just go deal with it. I will not make this mistake again. I'm probably going to bed soon because I'm beat.

You have to remember though, it's not just them charging it because they feel like it. The rent is too damn high. I worked in a tiny restaurant that paid $65k/month in rent. In order to cover costs, the prices reflect that.
Hahah, and that's at a diner. One of our favorite summer restaurants has a typical kid's menu and everything is $24.
There's a restaurant that DH and I visited when we were driving cross country before LO. Our meals were each $15, however kid meals were $20. We asked the waitress how come a kids meal was so much. She said the owner doesn't like kids so they bump up the prices to discourage them. I was shocked. It wasn't a super fancy place or anything and it was literally in the middle of nowhere.
Haha, that's kind of funny though. I'm amused by the grouchy owner.

That's so stupid. You don't have to offer a kids meal. If he doesn't want then there, he should have just not had a kids menu!
No more Wringling Brothers Circus! They're gone for good.
That is a relief to hear! DH got into an argument about going last time they were local. I won that round but will be glad not to fight about it again!
