BFing now and my next session he gets a bottle of breastmilk while I pump for 20-30min. Normally we go through a few wakeful fits through the night of being gassy but tonight I had a hard time waking him up for his last feeding!
I so look forward to the end of waking a baby to eat! I feel bad and it just feels wrong haha.
Definitely! I never imagined I'd want a baby who wakes up during the night so much! The good news is that he's started to wake up to eat before the alarm goes off most of the time which is a huge win in my book. I set an alarm for 4 hours 2x at night and during the day 2.5 hrs. I might could scale back because I know when he takes a bottle he's getting 4-5 ozs and when I do weighted feedings he's getting normally 3.5 oz min so he's eating enough, but for now I'm sticking to my schedule because its the only thing that helped us get some weight on him.

htuzzi324 are you totally opposed to a pacifier? It sounds like LO is using you as his personal paci.
brassyclarinet sounds like a growth spurt. We are going through our 2nd currently and it totally blows! We are giving bottles of breastmilk 2x a day and that helps a lot but I totally understand if you don't want to introduce bottles yet. The best thing you can do is do all the things to get your supply up ASAP. I've posted a few recs but can repost if you want. Good luck!
abvintage, I have never heard of the SNS. I guess I could try it because he really never had trouble at the nipple, I just wasn't producing enough I think. I give him the bottle, usually 2 to 3 ounces at a time, then try to nurse on each side for 10 minutes each, but sometimes he gets frustrated after five or six minutes. I also just ordered the fenugreek and I'm making the lactation cookies tonight. I also never heard of the power pump session. I will try that as well. At what point did your supply start to increase?
With power pumping it was probably a week for me because it was at the very beginning and LO was just not nursing really. With fenugreek and the lactation cookies about 3 days. I would power pump on those days too to keep from getting engorged and to just really kick start a supply increase. Pumping after nursing +5 min after you stop dropping should help increase supply as well. It's just annoying to deal with pumping that often but worth it. Hope some of this works for you, it really did for me!
I am getting very frustrated. Instead of just supplementing with formula we're pretty much giving him all formula. I'll try to give him the breast before or after formula but he seems frustrated on the nipple. My supply never really came in and I'm not sure why. When I pump I only get an ounce at best.
Are you doing SNS? We did not have success with it and switched to bottles which made him do much better with BFing. Also, for supply, I would do a 10 minute pump after each nursing session and 2 power pumps a day. Also try fenugreek capsules and lactation cookies. Getting supply up with a baby who is struggling to nurse is hard but these helped me a lot!
queenb totally hard to find the time but just a few days of it and I noticed a big difference! Hang in there!
We do a mini photo shoot every week so I can maybe learn to use my fancy camera and so that I can get some pics because I'm really awful about remembering to take them!:
Brith weight/length: 7lbs 11oz/20.5" Current weight: 8lbs 10oz Clothing sizes: Newborn pants and shorts but 0/3 for onesies! Milestones: He rolled from tummy to back last week! Getting more smiley too!
More unpacking to do today. DS is having the first of 2 observations today. The process to see if he qualifies for services through the district is a long one.
The 2nd observation happens next week then we meet the following week to discuss results.
Morning ladies!! Peanut has been super sleepy and lazy nursing the last two feedings. I'm trying to not worry to much, but we've been home since yesterday afternoon and I don't want to end up readmitted tomorrow at her check up for jaundice. Her color looks good, but I wish she'd dirty some more diapers and get interested in eating already.
Do they have you on formula? Between B wanting to sleep all the time and not wake up for feedings and the purity of breastmilk, it's the only way we got his jaundice cleared up and got him to start finally gaining weight.
He was so hard to wake up to get him to feed which makes the jaundice be drawn out even longer. He needed food that wasn't so pure.
aydee, DS went from 7lbs 10oz at birth the 6lbs 4oz! He wasn't getting enough milk. Not only that but BFing was and still is really painful for me. Here is what I did and it might be an option for you. After we tried formula SNS and then stopped because my milk had finally come in, then found out he was being starved and losing ass tons of weight I gave DS formula for a 2-3 feedings throughout the day. We did formula because he was also jaundice and needed to be pooping more. When he is given a bottle I pump. Right now DH gives him breastmilk bottles 2X a day and I pump during those times. I also pump about 45min-1hr30min after I feed him. You can also pump for a up to 10 minutes before and after every feeding (really what is recommended is that you pump until 2-5min after you stop dripping.)
What I like about the bottles is I know 2X a day he is getting 4 ozs (right now, earlier on it was 2-2.5 ounces). I also ordered this scale to monitor his weight every few days and do my own weighted feedings. It's been great.
I find even with watching his latch it hurts like a mother f'er and there is no way I'm getting around that, but those few times a day I pump it's actually a break for me. They really do get better about eating so stick with it.
Side note: we also tried SNS which a lot of people love because of fear of bottles but it made DS actually worse about BFing. He got lazy on the latch and was looking for the SNS tube and not wanting to latch when it was just breast available. I cried and cried over giving him a bottle but he went from breast to bottle really seamlessly so far. I will note that I make sure I'm not even around when he gets a bottle so he's not associating me in any way with a bottle. Talk to a LC and look into the SNS system. Do what you need to do to feed the baby but don't give up on BFing.
Anybody interested in a 1 month check in now that some babies are hitting that? I saw one on another board here and thought it looked neat to see where kids are at.
I have to go back to work at 3 months. When should I start building my freezer stash? I have some stored now but that will likely be used by the time he goes to daycare.
Right now I pump 8-11 oz a day in 2-3 pumping sessions. We are using 8 ozs daily though so we can get a guaranteed amount in him per day (because of his early feeding and weight gain issues). I read that at 3 months they are drinking 7-10oz per session so I really need to be pumping a lot.
I use fenugreek, do a power pump at least 2X a week (down from 2X a day at first but I really should be doing this more), just started baking lactation cookies, and I'm pumping at my highest output times, still I can't seem to get more than 5-6oz (at the most) in one pumping session. Most of the day I'll get 1.5-3oz.
Little man gets painful gassy and gets so fussy. I'm trying to keep on a feeding schedule of every 2.5 hours during the day and two 4 hour stretches at night but it's so hard when he is finally napping during the day to wake him. He gets these huge man farts. It's hilarious and I can't seem to be mature about it but I feel so bad when he's crying through it. We are using gripe water sometimes but only if it seems to be a particularly bad time. It's too early for colic right?
Q to mamas who breastfeed and pump ... So yesterday was our first successful day breastfeeding 3x.. The rest pumped milk bottle - for past few weeks been exclusive pumping --- now I was able to breastfeed her this morning and she is asleep on my chest right now - if i pump now -- and she wants to feed in an hour and I try breastfeeding -- will there be enough milk in there for her? ( in my breast - after pumping ) Soery if it doesn't make sense , sleep deprived and typing w one habd
How often is she feeding? I would say yes there will be something there because your pump is not going to get out what baby can. There will always be some left. I have found to get my supply up if I pump for about 10 minutes right before I BF it works out pretty well.
Hello ladies! It's been a while. I appreciate everyone who checked on me. Short version is feeding struggles lead to way more weight loss than we wanted in baby boy and mommy guilt set in strong. I needed some time to get back on track and get really regimented about feedings, etc. I'm so happy for all of you and I'm sorry to have missed out on so much.
funhaven now is not the time to feel bad for being firm. You need your H to step up and advocate for you now.
Has anyone else not been able to have a BM? Because I'm on day 5. Everything hurts and I nauseous because of it. I was just on colase but started Miralax yesterday. FX!
