can Lo not watch the birds and the squirrels from the front window, or....
YES!! Why does he have to be outside alone??
I think a lot of the what-ifs are a little extreme. A lot could be applied to other scenarios. What if when you're picking out tomatoes at the grocery store, a crazy woman grabs your cart and runs off? What if a drunk driver crashes into your car when you are driving to the library. What if the plane crashes while you're taking your kids on vacation?
Also I really think it depends on your house and yard set up. He's not like, chilling out there with no eyes on him. He's literally still a few feet away from me and in my line of sight. But if I'm thinking of my SIL's house and the way it's set-up, I would not do the same thing. It's really house/yard based, seriously.
There was a story here a few years ago where someone left her kid in a running car. She was just going to grab something in the house super quick, but at that moment a theif came and stole her vehicle. Thankfully once he noticed there was a kid inside he left the car a few streets away, but still. Freaks me right out!
Car is always locked if we are in public. Im glad the kid was okay and the thief bailed!
Yeah, I've noticed how I park near the cart returns now. Even when it's super hot or rainy! It's weird when I'm without LO and I still park there like..oh, wait, no kid!

But.. when you're picking out tomatoes at the grocery store, do you leave your cart over in the cereal aisle? Its right next to you where you can protect LO from the crazy lady trying to steal your cart. There are always "what ifs" I just think we do our best to be in charge of them. Someone could hold me up and steal my car or crash into my car in the parking lot while I'm in it with LO, but I'd still rather that than they steal it or whatever while LO is sitting in there by herself. That's the perspective I'm coming from.
Apparently an UO/FFFC based on lurking parenting: I'm voting 3rd party.
Not that it matters because Alabama is going to go solidly Trump, even if every single Democrat turned out and a good chunk of the Republicans voted Hillary.
I try to park by the cart corral, but I normally just leave DS in the shopping cart while I put the bags in the trunk, take the cart back, and then take DS and get him in the car. I don't think I've ever loaded him before the groceries. I will leave him in the car while I unload groceries, but the car is in our attached garage, and I can literally see it/him from the kitchen for the 30 seconds I'm in the house carrying in the bags.

The difference is none of those instances you listed would be your fault, you likely couldn't have done anything to prevent them. You leave your kid alone outside and something happens, it's your fault. No question about it.
I can recognize that. I still think the examples are extreme and the chances of them happening are just as great as something bad happening on my watch inside the house. I leave them for longer on their own inside than I do in the car. Half the time they are probably safer in the car because they can't get to anything.
So, serious question, this is not meant to be bitchy. What do you guys do with the kids when you have to take a shower? Because I have to take a shower every morning with 2 kids. DS sits on the couch watching TV and EATING where he could possibly choke. LO is usually crawling around his room and living room which are baby proofed, obviously, but there is always something that could go wrong.

I drove to the gym this morning... it's like a 5 minute walk, but there was some weird noises going on in my neighborhood before I left and I felt safer driving.
I leave C in the car too, if it is in sight the whole time and it is only a few seconds. To return a cart, to pick up dry cleaning, to drop of mail/ups, to go back inside the house if I forgot something. Always with opened windows and/or leaving the motor running. I do worry about the 'what if someone takes my car', but not on her chocking. It is literally a few seconds each time, it would take me longer to get my ass off the couch and run to her room if she would do that in her sleep.

veggiemo trying to respond to the shower question, I feel like you're just way more relaxed than I am about any and all "what ifs". I sometimes shower when LO is napping, but usually after she goes to bed for the night. I wouldn't ever get in the shower while she was just out and about wandering around the house. Too many what ifs for me. Not sure what I'd do with more than one little, but I imagine the same thing.. shower when they're in bed for the night. I used to put her in the bouncer in the bathroom if I showered while she was awake, but haven't since she's been mobile.
@hazeldublin showering during nap time is an amazing treat on weekends for me! Although DS doesn't nap and 9 times out of 10 he's eating something in front of the TV. Believe me, the thought has crossed my mind that he could choke and I would be in the shower, unable to hear/help. But I just have to dismiss the thought and press on with my day.

Who is running for 3rd party?
Gary Johnson (Libertarian) and Jill Stein (Green) are the most prominent, but there are others. I don't know that they'll all be on the ballot in every state, but I'll pick one and write in if I have to.
"it would take me longer to get my ass off the couch and run to her room if she would (choke) in her sleeep"
I said switching over laundry. Takes a few minutes. I'm not inside for half an hour folding and putting it away.
The point I'm making with the choking is it happens quick, so in the time your switching laundry that's enough time for a kid to choke.
The funny part is I'm actually a pretty relaxed parent, I don't lose my shit with the kids and people are constantly making remarks towards me that I'm very laid back with them. I feel like a helicopter parent with some of the stuff your saying.
Choking does happen quick. But I can tell you my kids are less likely to choke while strapped in a car seat than at home. Yesterday I noticed LO had something in his mouth. It was a little plastic disposable cover from the ear-thermometer that he had gotten to. Shit happens. I'm not uncomfortable leaving them in the car and am not worried they are going to choke while strapped in their car seats. It's just not on my worry list. Just because it's on yours doesn't make you a helicopter parent. It just means we have different views of what is safe for our own kids in our own situations.
Edited to clarify: I'm not worried they are going to choke while in the car.
Yes, there is no chain attachment. You can take your cart without putting money/token to release the last one ! Mind blown right?
So weird! I can imagine carts floating around neighbourhoods.
There are def carts floating around neighborhoods. Only one store I've ever seen is Aldi you pay 25 cents for a cart, but before Aldi came here I'd never seen or heard of it. Some stores have a lock mechanism on the wheels that trips when you go out the parking lot barrier, or smaller convenience store have a pole coming out the top so you can't go out the door. But yea, its not uncommon to see people pushing a cart around the neighborhood collecting recyclables and whatnot.

Write in as voting blank? Do you put a paper in an envelope when you vote?
@hazeldublin - In most states they allow write in votes. So the section for voting for president will have an "other" option with a blank for you to fill in with the name.
Kristykristyleelee, well I always return my cart, always. But I also leave the kids strapped in the car when I do it. No one could drive off with the car anyway, because I have the fob on me. You need to have the fob inside the car to put it in gear, even if it's already on. I still can't believe this is such a big deal.

No it's different here, writing on the slip would invalidate the vote making it a "spoilt vote".
You get the slip write 1-5 or whatever in a box beside the candidates name in order of the most popular for you, you can just write 1. Then you bend the paper in half and put it in the polling box.
Ours are counted by computer, so you bubble in a circle and they run it through a scanner.
Here's a sample ballot: LINK I'd just post a picture but I can't find one that's not huge.
3dimesdown , so does it mean any names will be recognized or only real candidates? Like you write Mickey Mouse, will it be 1 vote for Mickey in your county?
I think the write-in candidates have to go through some sort of process to apply for their votes to count or something? I'm pretty sure Johnson and Stein will make our ballot, but there are other even smaller parties (like the Constitution party that apparently exists and I had no idea about until recently) who will put in their candidacy for write-in.
Wait so what happens when you have to load your child and an armload of stuff in your car? I feel like my child is safer strapped in a locked car while I run back in the house than he is left alone in the house alone while I load the car.
Kristykristyleelee I'm scandalized at your shopping cart confession too. This hurts my rule-following heart.
If I have more than I can carry at once, I put her in her stroller on the porch where I can see her from in the house and from the car. The way my apartment is if I strap her in the car then went back inside, the neighbors could see her in there alone, while I couldn't see her at all. Ive also done it the reverse and bring all the stuff I need to load out onto the porch while she's walking with me, then put her in the car and load up from the porch. Even at my parents house where its more private I still move all the things to load up outside before I put her in the car then put the things in the car. I don't like to not be able to see her. I just don't trust people I think.

I never really have stuff to put in the car, just babies and a bag. If I need loads of stuff I'll get MH to load it before work.
See this where there is a total difference. My H works all weekend and I take the kids to our family cottage on the lake every Sunday by myself. I have to pack the stroller, beach blankets, a big bag with towels, suits, sunscreen etc., a cooler with drinks and lunches, any toys DS wants, T-ball set, on and on and on. I leave right before nap time so LO will sleep in the car on the way there, so usually they are both tired, whining and crying and making things difficult. Therefore, in the car they go, AC blasting, music playing. They are safe and happy and I can get shit done so we can be on the way.

The privacy of your location must also make a total difference, veggiemo. If I have all that stuff to load up where it would take a long time of going back and forth, I couldn't just leave her in the car where neighbors can see her but I cant.. not while I go back and forth into and out of the house. I'd load all the stuff outside onto the porch while she's still with me, then do a second load into the car.. or I'd put her in the stroller on the porch while I load up. But I'm imagining that where your car is is far less public than mine, so I get what you're saying.
H asked me last night when the last time O had a bath. Friday, it was last Friday. But he's gone swimming and played in a baby pool with fresh water since then sooo it counts? Whoops. And he still didn't get a bath last night because it was already past bedtime. But he will tonight.

Totally. I can't think of an apartment situation where I would feel comfortable doing this. No one can see our garage area unless they were to come all the way down the driveway. If anyone drives down to our house, us and the neighbors who share the drive are on high alert, peeking out our windows and wondering if the person is meant to be down there. It's a unique situation, I guess.
I don't think it's circles @hazeldublin I was trying to prove it's different for everyone. I really don't feel the need to have things loaded beforehand and I only ever have the kids on monitor when I'm sleeping. In my personal scenario, the kids are safe in the car. I wouldn't leave them in there if they weren't. I am not saying it's something you should do, or that you're a helicopter parent if you're not doing the same thing as me. I'm just explaining the way I do it.
I mean.... Can you not just pop your kid in the crib or pack n play if they aren't old enough for you to trust them not to kill themselves while you load up the car??
