Well, my LC says she is out of ideas for how to make R cope with my OALD. We have just tried everything. I have been using a nipple shield for 2 1/2 weeks and for the first almost 2 weeks, it was working great. Now, about 30% of feeds are screaming sessions when I give in and have to pump and give him a bottle again. That's better than the 90% before, but still stressful since I can never predict when one feed is going to go well.
Any other EBF babies spit up any colored product in their spit up? LO had a smidge of egg yolk yellow slime in her small "happy spit" - possibly partially digested milk? It was very close to the color of her poop. It's the first time it happened here and has me nervous.
My dd had this happen and I didn't think much of it. A few weeks later, it happened again and I mentioned it to my pedi and we were given an appt at children's to test her for a possible malformation. Apparently, yellow spit up can be bile, which can be indicative of a problem but isn't necessarily. In our case, the test didn't show anything wrong and dd continues to spit up yellow every so often. All that to say, I'd call your pedi and let them decide if they want to investigate it.
What does it mean when your supply is regulated? Is it like - you can't increase it anymore? Or that you produce the same amount all the time? That you don't get engorged?
I'm a little confused about this too. Especially in the context of EPing.
Lately I've been feeling this creepy crawly feeling all over by body while nursing, especially during the night. Like I am so restless and uncomfortable and I need her to be done ASAP. By googling I come up with "breastfeeding aversion" but my feeling doesn't quite seem to match what I'm reading. Has anyone heard of this???
Green can be normal, a sign of too much foremilk, or an allergy thing. Do you have signs of an oversupply or any other reason to think he isn't getting hindmilk?
No oversupply. No other reason. But I do keep going back and forth about milk intolerance. Today his one poopy diaper was pure green mucous. However his silent reflux had calmed down or he got used to it...
*lurking* You might want to check with the pedi on mucousy, green poops. Mucus in the stool can generally be associated with an intolerance. Does baby have a cold by chance? That can also cause mucousy poops too.
Any tips or type of bottle that'll get DS to take the bottle. He was taking it, but I wasn't consistent in giving him one. And of course now that I have to return to work he will only take an ounce. After the ounce he's only mildly fussy then calms down, so clearly he's not starving. But the next feed hell nurse forever. If I'm gone all day id like him to take more so he's not nursing all evening/night.

meagpt22 - it took a little while for DS to get used to bottles, but he takes them like a pro now! We use Dr. Browns with preemie nipples (you have to buy those separately). Every other nipple was too fast for him.

meagpt22 we initially supplemented and DD did great with the bottle. When we reintroduced it after EBF for many weeks she had a hard time. We've done 1-2 bottles of pumped milk every day for her to practice. We use Tomm.ee T.ippee with the extra slow flow nipple (I complained to them since this nipple is not sold seperatly and you have to buy a bottle to get it. They sent me 4 free ones!).

Thanks remylove1011, hummingbird125, shanny! I did buy one Tomm.ee T.ippee with an extra slow nipple but haven't tried it. I'll try that one next bottle feeding. I'm hoping that on Saturday when I'm gone for such an extended period he'll be forced to drink more than an ounce. The past week when given the bottle in the evening he's only gone 2-3 hours since last feed so probably isn't super hungry.

meagpt22, My son was the opposite with nipples- he likes it gushing it out of my boobs so we use a faster nipple. He will only take the standard Madela bottles. They don't have any of the fancy anti-colic stuff going on but he likes them best and it's super convenient since they screw into my pump parts. I was convinced he was going to starve to death at daycare. After a few days he was eating more and more. One of the things I love about breastfeeding is that they pretty much stay at their ounces for a long time- it doesn't keep increasing like formula. DS is 15 weeks and he still only takes 3oz per feeding. Some of my friends' FF babies are up to like 10oz now!

@spiceysalmonroll that's interesting that the oz have stayed the same for you. Is that how its supposed to be? DD has been doing 4oz for a while and recently acts like she's wanting more so we've given her another ounce on a few occassions. She's a weirdo.

My 12 week old bf baby takes around 6-7oz lol. I also read that the oz should stay the same. Granted, he started taking 4-5oz around 3 weeks old. So in the grand scheme of thing I guess he hasn't gone up that much? He never spits up so I guess I have resigned to the fact that I just birthed a human-pig hybrid.
hahah whoa I would not be able to pump that much! Granted mine still eats every 2 hours so maybe that's why his hasn't changed?
When I had DD1, the LC at the hospital gave me a handy chart/intake guideline as to how many oz breastfed babies should eat per bottle based on baby's weight (and the average of eating every 3 hrs, or 8x/day). Obviously it's a loose guideline and we adjust based on baby's cues, but it's been a good starting point. I think it only goes up to 6oz being the max amount (18lb baby). It never increases from there because around 6 months baby should be eating solids and therefore won't need more milk.
I think the max I ever gave was for DD2 - 6.5oz bottles. It suggests 4.5oz for a 14lb baby, so that's where we're at for DS and it seems appropriate.

I don't get the oz. never goes up line. Studies show babies eat more to an average peak of 30 oz. per 24 hours before it declines as solids are introduced. Some babies will need even more if 30 is the average high. And if you space out feeds over time like everyone I know does them each feed will get bigger. Sometimes breastfeeding "facts" that get thrown around baffle me.
So...at just shy of 13 weeks old, R finally got the hang of nursing consistently! Whether he has gotten used to overactive letdown or my flow got better, things finally got better. I am so happy that I don't have to be stuck using a nipple shield and dealing with a fussy baby who can't handle the fast flow.

I know Medela has longer recommendations, but how long do you keep thawed BF in the refrigerator? Since DS isn't drinking a lot during the day right now I've wasted a lot of BF. Just trying to see what everyone else does.

meagpt22 Mine can only be kept in the fridge for 3-4 days. Medelas recommendations are 4-8. I did an experiment and smelled my milk each day to figure out how many days I could go in the fridge. If you've thawed it from the freezer it should be used within 24 hours.

Ugh. I know it's normal for one to produce slightly more milk than the other but mine are getting really out of hand. When I pump at work, I'm now getting 4 oz & 1 oz. WTF. I always make sure to alternate sides that he feeds on so I don't understand how it got so off balance but I really need to get the bum one back up so I can pump enough.
LO has a tooth. A fucking tooth. I know some kids are able to breastfeed until they go to school...but what happens with the teeth? LO can't figure it out and I can't either. Idk if his latch is different because his gums are bothering him or if this is just the new normal. This lone tooth paired with returning to work and pumping has my nips constantly sore now.
Should I be trying something to change his latch or is this like the beginning all over again and my nips just need to toughen up?

Bah. I'm frustrated.
Wow, a tooth already! I seem to remember my kid biting me once or twice when she first had teeth, but she must have figured it out because it was never an issue. She had almost all of teeth by the time we were done BFing. Hopefully he'll get used to having teeth.
Sakinah he may be biting/exploring the sensation of what it's like having a tooth. I remember with DD, her having teeth was fine. She did bite a few times and one time drew blood, but it wasn't generally an issue. Good luck!

Drew blood! Oh no! Lol I hope to avoid that if possible. I think you are right about the exploring. He runs his tongue across it all day. Its really cute until it's time to nurse again. I've been putting him in "time out" when he bites. I say ouch loudly and take him away from the boob for 10 secs. Hopefully he will relate the biting with being taken away from the food source soon.

I need to add that by "tooth" I mean it has broken through the gum. Not fully in, but in enough to do some damage lol.

I knew a mom whose son popped 2 teeth at 6 weeks. Crazy things can happen! I like your idea of timeout too.

That's exactly what is recommended...have a "no" or "ouch" reaction and take him off. Hope it gets better soon.
