agm04 I was worried about giving it up too and the first few days (2 or 3) without the Merlin suit were tough but I'm glad we did it now. He was waking every 3-3.5 hours at night because he was trying to roll to his side and couldn't get there. Now he rolls to his belly as soon as I lay him down for bed and he sleeps 8 hours.
I put it on him once for a nap when he was overtired and he slept almost 2 hours. I tried it again the next day for a nap and he slept less than 30 minutes so that was the final push I needed to just ditch it. Now he naps on his belly and we are both happier.
junebugjam that gives me hope. I tried her belly last night during bedtime freakout (in sleep sack instead of suit) and she had no idea what to do. Just kept picking up her head and kicking and crying. It makes sense that I should wait until she's trying to get there herself.
I bedshared with dd during a nap the other day, and she rolled to her belly. That was the best nap we've had in awhile. I'm hoping she'll start getting there on her own in crib soon. Sounds like she'll be like your LO junebugjam

DS did the same thing yesterday for one of his naps when I put him on his belly.
We had a good sleep thing going, then LO got a cold and we went on vacation. He refused to sleep in the PNP (he's never liked it) so we ended up bed sharing all week...I'm hoping tonight isn't too rough, especially since he is on a weird schedule from the whole week and driving back today. We are still doing the Merlin suit, but he is getting much better at rolling both ways, so might be able to ditch it soon. The thought really scares me though.
For sound machines, do any of you have ones that go through the night? Ours does, and I want to switch it to something that turns off automatically after a set amount of time. Anyone have issues switching like that? Can I expect a week or so of more frequent wake ups or something?

Our conair sound machine stays on all night and through all naps. It does have the capability of turning off after 30 minutes (and maybe a 60 min option too?), but I've read that they need the same environment they fall asleep in to put themselves back to sleep when they rouse between sleep cycles. I'm not help with what to expect! I don't really mind ours being on. It gives us the ability to make a little more noise while she sleeps.

I bought an app for my iPod called Sound Sleeper. It has a listen mode that will play for 10 mins when it registers sound in the room. It's designed to help soothe them back to sleep when they wake up without having to play it all night. It also gives you a neat analysis at the end of the night of awake and sleep times. You can also set it to play all night if you want it to. I would highly recommend it.

We just managed to changed nap to be right after the bottle. Holy crap that's a lot better! He went down without a paci, and without a fuss. It kind of felt like cheating.
Problem is doing it this way required planning and self-discipline. In other words, DH will mess it up again tomorrow by trying to make Jake sleep in...
DD is rolling over to her stomach for sleep time recently. This is normal right? I hope so. I'm afraid to move her. She slept on her stomach in the same spot from 8:30pm until 5:30am this morning which is amazing.

as expected DH has gone freelance and made up his own sleep training for jake today. At least he's still been dummy free as far as i can tell but nap after bottle has gone out the window and he put jake downstairs because he 'didnt want to sleep upstairs'. typical.
mands1125 yup that's been happening with a lot of our LOs. Jake sleeps right on his face **slowclap**.

mands1125, I found DD sleeping on her stomach for the first time when I went to wake her up this morning. I wish I had thought to take a picture, had wiggled herself up into the corner of the crib and was sleeping on her tummy with her butt up in the air and one arm hooked around her stuffed lamb.

Lol that's basically what she did at my parents this weekend! I thought maybe it was just the mini crib but she must have decided tummy is better for her!

mands1125 my baby has been sleeping exclusively on his tummy for about the past week. I lay him down on his back for bed and he rolls over instantly. For naps I start him on his tummy because he hates naps so my theory is he's too mad to roll over and instead just lays there screaming if I put him on his back. It's normal and ok to leave them that way if they put themselves there. My H asked the pedi about him sleeping face down and he said it's fine and you don't have to turn his head as long as it's a firm mattress and no pillows, blankets, etc.
We started the harsher portion of our sleep training this week, no pacifier or rocking, just his lovie. A lot more crying, it's hard breaking.
The first night DS went for 25minutes, then he woke after 30mins, cried for another 30mins before settling to sleep on his tummy. Went from 9-9 with only 1 wake up at 1am!
2nd night was horrible. DS looked tired at 6.30, do we started his nighttime routine then. What a big mistake. He's apparently a 9pm kind of kid. Cried for an hour, I almost gave in but DH stopped me.
Tonight I insisted we wait til it's 8 before we start his routine. He slept after 3 minutes of crying. Woke half an hour later but went back down after 7 minutes. Still asleep at this point I'm just up to pump.
I have a burning question though... Do your LOs eventually goes to bed without crying? I'm feeling very stressed every time he goes down crying. Even if he's only a 5 minutes crier, it's just so hard.
We used to hold him and put him into bed somewhat asleep, it was so peaceful. I'm so tempted to return back to those routines, but I know I really shouldn't. The reason we went to sleep train LO was because he was requiring so much more rocking than before. There were a few nights I was rocking him for 3 hours before I was successful in transferring him to his crib. It's damn tiring to rock a 20lb sack of rice for that long!
PikoPiko yay for improvement. It can be so tough but it will be worth it in the end. DD still cries at every nap time even if it is for just a minute but not at night. Most do get better about it eventually but it may be around for a while and those that go down without a fuss will likely fuss about bed time at some point during toddler hood. Probably not exactly what you wanted to hear but just remember it's them learning their world and how to respond it's not you being a mean mom.

PikoPiko Jake still cries when he's put down for naptime but he doesn't cry (usually) at night. Last night was an exception, it took him about 30 minutes to get to sleep. But he was looking at me and crying. When i put the sheet over me in frustration, I'm not sure if he thought i was gone (hilarious if so) but the crying stopped within 2 minutes. I agree it's heart breaking and frustrating to think it will always be like this. I don't think Jake will ever go BAM! to sleep, he'll always whimper and fuss because it seems to be his way of processing the day before he falls asleep. But the real crying does get a lot better and should become infrequent/not long. If he continues crying for an hour every night it would mean reevaluating I think. But it needs a bit of time.
I am ditto the above comments. Abby doesn't generally cry at night when I put her down anymore. She wimpers a little bit for anywhere from 5-20 minutes but I think its just her trying to get comfortable. There hasn't been any major meltdowns like the two days of sleep training.
For naps, she is getting better but usually there is more crying then before settling.
I have a question for those that use a crib lovie. I've started this with DS - picked a toy, it only lives in his crib, he's only in his crib for sleep. If you know he'll take a nap at another house (like ILs or your parents) do you bring the lovie with you? Or is it only for home crib?

lilyelayne I plan to bring it with us when we go on vacation in a couple weeks, and I would bring it if we were visiting my parents, I guess I would only bring it if I knew it was going to be a longer trip and DD was going to need to take her normal nap somewhere else. I imagine something familiar would be helpful in when they need to nap in a different environment.
We are having a problem that I haven't really found a solution to in any of my reading. DD has been doing ok going to sleep at night. I usually nurse her and she nods off but I wake her up and put her in her sleep sack before I put her in the crib. She might cry for a few minutes after that but usually falls asleep pretty easily. The past few nights though she does not want to go back to sleep during her MOTN wakings. And there have been a lot of MOTN wakings, ever 2-3 hours max. We've tried letting her CIO, but she screams for multiple hours. For some reason going back to sleep MOTN is completely different than bed time or naps.
I have a question for those that use a crib lovie. I've started this with DS - picked a toy, it only lives in his crib, he's only in his crib for sleep. If you know he'll take a nap at another house (like ILs or your parents) do you bring the lovie with you? Or is it only for home crib?
I take our lovie anywhere he might sleep. I'm actually planning on making a couple more to keep one in the car and one at the ILs, we use a small taggie blanket so it's easy to duplicate. This may not be what I should be doing, but it works for us.

I think that's one of the big things about parenting. Ultimately, you have to do what works for your family!
Night 3 of sleep training - DS went down at 8.30pm and didn't wake til 6.30am. There were some whimpering here and there at night, but he wasn't really awake, went back down within a minute.
Even the sound of his whimpers is so heart breaking. It was hard to resist the urge to go stroke his little face and tell him it'll be alright. I was about to quit breast feeding, but now I want to wait a bit until he's more settled into his night sleeping. Probably irrational, thought it might be nice for DS to get his reward when he wakes up after a long night... mama just wants a reason to snuggle.

Ahhh my child. 2nd night that we've had crying which ended up in a pick up and cuddle. Dh said naps went like that too. Looks like he's developing a new habit

I'm glad to see so many are seeing improvement here and there. Has anyone had success training naps or is that later? Wishing I could help DD nap longer than 30 minutes at a time so she doesn't get cranky so often throughout the day.
I feel like we have been pretty successful with nap training. It took about 2 weekends and every weekend seems better. Not sure what she is doing at daycare (need to talk more to the head teacher when I see her) but she had two nice naps yesterday and they said she is in her crib lately which is good.
I would just love for her to take like a 1 hour+ nap twice a day on the weekends in her crib. That would be amazing.

After bouncing and walking DS for an hour yesterday just to get a 30min nap, I am attempting to sleep train today. We're almost to the 40 min mark of screaming crying with me going in to check on him every so often. He keeps getting quiet just long enough for me to get my hopes up and then he lets loose again. Somebody hold me. This sucks!
