For those of you doing puffs, is your LO crawling at all? It says on the container "for babies that crawl with their stomach off the floor" so DH refuses to let him try until he's crawling.
We just tried puffs yesterday and DD is just sitting up but not crawling. She did really well. We visited the pediatrician for her 6 month check up and she really recommended giving her soft food items such as bread, cooked noodles and to start making her pureed food chunkier. So I guess crawling doesn't matter that much.

We tried puffs and she does okay. It's more just playtime for her. The dogs love it because they get most of the puffs. She will get about one or two completely in her mouth. I can tell it's going to help her mortar skills.
We're going to start BLW this weekend when LO turns 6 months. My MIL gave me the side-eye when I first told her about it because she's been trying to get me to give him rice cereal for months, but I think she is coming around. Good thing, because she watches LO and is going to have to feed him lunch.
I think I would like to try BLW but I don't know where to start. How do you cut up the food (like size)? Do you cook it until it's pretty soft? I don't know what I'm doing and would love any suggestions!
I started with strips of avocado and soft baby carrots. You have to make the food big enough so they can grab it until their pincer skill works. I just pile everything on her high chair tray and let her have at it.
I read the baby led weaning cookbook and got the main gist of it there. You may also want to review some forums on BLW to get tips. For instance: when your LO gags, it's really easy to think they are choking. Also, sticking your finger in their mouth to sweep out food can push food back behind their gag reflex and cause them to choke. All things I didn't know but I'm glad I read someone else talk about it.
I will say BLW is very enjoyable for me overall, I love eating with her.

I gave DD some banana today. First I cut it up too small and she couldn't pick it up she just mushed it around. Then I gave her a big log of it. She put it in her mouth and sucked on it and gave it a few bites. It was more messy than anything. But it was cute to watch her feed herself. After a few minutes I cleaned her up and fed her 2oz of purée mango.
For dinner I peeled a clementine. I gave her a slice and she sucked on it a little and gummed it with it still in her hand. Once it started to look dangerous I took it away and fed her 4oz of purée peas and carrots.
I'm liking a little bit of both. I want her to get a taste for a bunch of different foods but I like her to learn to feed herself too. So doing both is working so far for us. I'm going to give her some avocado slices this weekend.
My mom watches her during the week and I know she would not like giving her chunks of solid food so that's something I'm going to do with her myself.
Glad to see the responses to BLW, DS hates purées but will happily eats mushy chunks. Sweet potato and avocado are his fave. We've been traveling the past few days so I decided to try puffs and they might be baby crack. DS can't crawl but has good sitting control and can't get enough of the puffs.

I would love to do blw. DH gives it a big fat no. Our pediatrician really encouraged it at our 6 month appointment so maybe I'll be sneaky and try it during the day when DH is gone to see how DD likes it....

My DH wasn't sure about it either. Now he understands. Start your LO on soft foods. Stuff you can squish like avocado, and potatoes.

Beware of too much banana. LO got ultra constipated after we gave him banana and his Pedi said that banana and applesauce are what they recommend for babies who have diarrhea!
We started solids around Christmas but then had to stop because he got a mystery rash. I cut dairy out of my diet and the rash hasn't returned, even though we've worked our way back to all the foods he was eating before, so I guess it really was the dairy...
Now he's eating solids at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with pumped BM while I'm at work and nursing when I'm home.
We are also doing a mix of purees and BLW, though honestly we do way more purees because usually what we're eating doesn't seem appropriate for him (rare meat, wheat based stuff, things cooked with salt and spices, etc.) He loves sweet potato fries and broccoli, though, when we give him those whole.
Anyway, here's a sample solids menu:
Breakfast: 1 tablespoon of oat powder mixed with an ounce or two of breastmilk, plus a little bit (maybe 1/2 ounce) of prunes or pears (purees) mixed in
Lunch: 2 ounces of a meat puree blend (earth's best organic turkey and vegetables, chicken and rice, etc) 1-2 ounce(s) of fruit or veggie puree. Sips of water from a plastic shot glass

I joined that facebook group you suggested (I hope that's not creepy). There's a lot of great information on there. Thanks for the recommendation! I think I will do a little reading and then maybe try giving him some banana or sweet potato this weekend.
Ive been giving Aviv dinner every night with DD1 and she has been pigging out. I am also of the food before 1 is just for fun mindset and it is making me nervous how much she is eating but at the same time I want her to put on weight so blech.
I think I would feel better if she was self feeding, but she refuses to grab on to anything and just wants me to feed her....
I started with leaning towards BLW, but baby was really not interested, so we jumped back to rice cereal and purees.
She's had lots of cereal (we send it to DC with her for lunch), butternut squash (meh), spinach (more meh) and greek yogurt (loves!)
So now we're mixing in the rice cereal with the greek yogurt, and will probably stir in veggies as we introduce them. Pedi was most concerned that she have rice cereal for iron, etc., so that's our main focus.

Question regarding rice cereal...so, most nights for dinner, I give DD a puree and a little bit of cereal. I mix either breast milk or formula with the cereal. My question is, can I just put some cereal straight into the puree and mix it without having to add formula or breast milk? Obviously, I wouldn't make the consistency too thick, but I was just wondering if that's something that I can even do. Or does it always have to be mixed with a liquid?

I haven't mixed it with bm in a couple weeks and have just been putting it straight in with the purees. LO likes it and she's still pooping and not fussy. So that's a win in my book.

Thanks! DD goes to a sitter while I work and most of the time I only pump just enough to send with her. So I always feel like I'm almost wasting BM if I mix it in with the cereal. So I've been wanting to try this to avoid having to use my BM.
Ooh I also like the info on adding the cereal to the purees--good to know. Ever since my AF came and jacked my breastmilk supply, I'm a little sad about using the milk for cereals that he's not crazy about.
At our 6 month appointment yesterday, our pedi suggested that we need to transition to giving LO solids before breastmilk at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (He did caution us that we'd probably want to make breakfast be the last of those we transition to because of how hungry LO is first thing in the morning.) Is that what any of you are doing as well?
A large part of me is wanting to deny this whole solid foods thing. But I guess it would be really awkward to send breastmilk along to college, so I guess I better get on board with it.

I never mix cereal with breastmilk anymore. Straight into the purée. And I only add it bc I make my own and the fruit can be very liquidy so I add a little cereal to thicken it up.
DD is a monster eater. She usually has 2oz fruit purée with cereal in the AM but in the evening I've been giving her more to eat with dinner.
Tonight she had almost a whole small banana by hand, 2oz butternut squash and cereal and 2oz apple purée and cereal and about 7 puffs. I swear she would have eaten more of I gave it to her. And she loves everything it's outrageous. Here she is chowing down on some avocado!!
Oh I should have added that the pedi said that the food transitioning to 3 meals with solids is for 6-9 months so at least it's not a super hurry to accomplish it! But still...it's so much simpler to just stick a boob in the mouth.

With my first I didn't do more than 1 meal a day (if that) until she was 10 months or so. Then I committed to at least one meal a day and we gradually switched to 3.
With Aviv we are doing 1 meal now, dinner with the family. That falls around 5pm, and I always BF no more than an hour before, and she nurses again before bed at 6:30.
For me, it's too much of a hassle to worry about her getting a well balanced diet when she can get all that from my breastmilk. So the solids become more about her just learning how to eat and getting some extra bonus calories.
For BLW, how do you get LO to put the food in her mouth? P shoves everything else in her mouth but food she just plays with? Do I just wait till she figures it out?
We are doing purées and LO really likes it. If I put him in his high chair while we are getting ready in the morning he will eventually cry until I sit to feed him. Is that possible that he knows he eats there? So he gets 2-3 purée meals a day.

Most days, DD just eats solids at dinner (2 oz of veggies and some cereal) but I occasionally give her a fruit or avocado (wait, is avocado a fruit anyway?) at lunchtime if she's just nursed or if the boys are being high maintenance. I can't remember when I officially transitioned to 2 and then 3 meals with the boys so I'm just winging it for now.
We're still only doing 1 meal a day (he just turned 6 months and we started maybe a month ago introducing foods). He only eats maybe 2 tbsp of purees at most. He also has a cold and has been teething which I think has contributed to his disinterest in eating too much.

This exactly. One meal a day is time consuming enough right now. She only eats a few bites at a time, too. I think if she was eating more I would be more compelled to add more. But, daycare would have to do that.

I'm going to jump on board here. I'd like to do BLW, but have to be honest with myself. It isn't going to happen full time. DC won't do it and half the stuff that's preferred for it are things we don't regularly prepare. So, mix of purées with some BLW when it works for us.
We're doing 3 "meals" a day. A few puffs with a 3.5oz container of food usually, though when it works with what the rest of the family is having, she gets some of that. Still nursing about an hour before each meal, plus before bed. We've had a couple of instances of constipation, but it clears up after a meal or 2 with prunes.
My biggest concern these days is introducing the sippy cup. She only gets a bottle at DC and switching it to a sippy makes me anxious because she doesn't know how to use them yet so I'm worried she won't get enough milk. Hoping that offering it with water for a few weeks during meals will be the trick to getting over this.
Why do you have to switch to sippy at daycare? Are they making you or you just want to?
I've been putting water in the sippy cup and she just plays around with it really. I give it to her when she's done with all her solid food at a feeding. She does sip it a little but not really anything substantial.

I don't have to until she moves up to the next room (around her birthday). DC is a factor because she's there from about 7 am to up to 5pm, so our home at time is limited during the week and doesn't include meals, just nursing, which I'm not going to give up for the sake of a sippy. Sippy with water at home is the answer, I just don't know how best to do this when she's not having a meal.

Does anyone else's kiddo shove their thumb in their mouth right after taking a bite? She's not full bc she is super excited to take the next bite. But then BAM, thumb in the mouth. DH thought it might be her trying to swallow the food through sucking. It's pretty cute, but very messy.
Did anyone else start having sleep problems when starting solids? Not sure if it's coincidence, but since starting solids 1x a day, LO is suddenly waking 4-5x a night. She's also pooping at night again, so I'm wondering if it's all related.
