How do you tell the difference between thrush and mastitis? I feel off... a little nauseous, much more tired than usual, but no fever. I have excruciating nipple pain, like knives stabbing through my nipples. This is way worse than my usual latch issue pain. It gets worse during feeding and stays painful afterwards. I have throbbing pain deep into both breasts and had a clogged duct on one side that I think I got cleared. Nursing is so painful that it's absolutely out of the question right now. I'm even scared to pump. I just don't know what to do because im not sure what is causing this. LO has no white spots in his mouth. Do I go to urgent care? Try antifungal cream? Ugh I don't know....

Just wanted to share my good news - We've officially graduated from LC! No more follow-ups, little lady took a good 3oz at the breast today and has gained over a pound since our last check-in! No more expressed-milk supplementing, no more excessive pumping. I'm doing a happy dance over here

Urgent care. Pain like that, you should be seen.
Off to urgent care I go. Ugh... I hope they have half a clue what they are doing.

FXFY.
Well I paid $75 for her to tell me that it doesn't look like mastitis but there is nothing she can do and that I should stop breastfeeding. This is AFTER I called ahead to see if this was something they thought they would be comfortable evaluating. I'm so ragey.

FUCK THEM. THEY DON'T KNOW SHIT. I would be writing an angry letter and demanding a refund.
Have you tried a shower and massage? Maybe hand express a little?

Holy hell righty, calm down, you keep either choking the baby or spraying her in the face. Geez and I thought I might tank my supply by doing the occasional formula feeding...not so much!

I am normally a people pleaser and am not good at throwing fits, but this bitch be PISSED, so I may just do that. I am going to call my OB tomorrow and see if they can get me in. If they diagnose me with something then I'm going to put that in my letter to them. I really feel like it's thrush at this point. And if I get the little boys sickness who was running around blowing snot everywhere I'm gonna hurt someone.

Wow, so unhelpful. I'd write a strongly worded letter. Are you able to see your Dr? A LC? So sorry you had to deal with this on top of how awful you feel.
Oh and I did try a shower and massage, which helped the pain from the clogged duct, but my pump just can't do as good a job as LO can and I literally can't stand the pain of him sucking. Even the pump is excruciating. bibliothecary
Screw cluster feeding. Jake has eaten every hour w maybe a 20 min break in between. My milk still hasn't come in. I feel bad but holy shit I need to sleep. 2 hours from 6am-8am last night are not going to cut it. I'm considering supplimenting at night so he actually has a full belly and sleeps.

Hang in there. This round of cluster feeding has a purpose and helps your milk to come in. Just know that the end is near. But oh its exhausting.

NIP- anyone having any luck? I tried it twice and LO does not like being covered up. She won't stay latched with a cover on. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to just whip em out yet :/ Soccer practice is impossible, there is nowhere to go besides my hot car...

I don't have an issue with nip but my husband wants me to cover up. I haven't had the opportunity to do it yet. I'm always in awe of people who can just whip them out.
bcmomsaysso, I have NIPed several times. I think how you are dressed can play a large part in how easy it is. one time i was in t-shirt and jeans. I was uncomfortable because i was showing my stomach. The other times, i was layered, so shirt up- bra and tank down. Soo much more comfy.
bcmomsaysso I was just wearing a nursing tank, bro not much coverage. Whatever. Don't want to see, don't look. I have 2 covers but neither of us like them. There are very few people I'm concerned enough to use them around. I might be more inclined to use a cover when it's winter and cold.
bcmomsaysso you've gotten great advice. If you're still nervous about showing your breasts, one thing you might want to do is just use a receiving blanket to cover during the latch and then take it off when baby's latched on. Your baby's head covers most all of your breast, and if you're using the two shirt method that @kateyoung describes, the top of your breast would be covered by your shirt. Nothing showing!
The only place I wear a cover is in church, which is usually just a scarf I incorporate into my outfit. Otherwise I NIP uncovered all of the time. Baby's gotta eat and momma's gotta empty those boobs.

this is what I do. I am still sometimes wearing full panel maternity pants, so I don't have to worry about my stomach showing. I cover her and my head with a muslin blanket while getting her latched, then take the blanket off.

I only cover long enough to get her latched, then I remove the cover. It's too dang hot here to have an extra layer. I'm not brave enough to whip it out but I don't have a problem once she's on.

I panic NIP. We are still struggling with latching so there's a lot of on and off. I have a hard enough time doing it at the mothers group I go to. I'm actually starting to worry that we will never get the latch down. It's been a month, when will this get easier?!

So I am starting to think about pumping. I'd like to build up a stash so that I can have my husband give a bottle a day, and there'll be a supply starting to build for when I need to go somewhere or back to work. It would also make me feel more comfortable to be out of the house with a bottle, see my above post about NIP.
So I have a forceful letdown and possible oversupply. When is the best time for me to pump? She tends to go to bed for the night around 8 PM and gives us a stretch of sleep until 12 or 1. I often stay up just a little later, so I was thinking about jumping around nine and then going to bed. Might that work? I was trying to pump after her morning feed, and that worked great over the weekend when my husband was home but she often wants to eat about every hour and a half during the day right now. So after I feed her and keep her upright a half hour it doesn't really leave me much time to pump and be ready for the next feeding. What are you girls doing?

I decided I just give no fucks about nip. If baby is hungry he gets to eat abs if people don't like it oh well.
How long are nipples supposed to be sensitive? I use that word instead of in pain because it's not like I need to wear anything protecting them...I can touch them and they don't hurt. But if they are rubbed a certain way they do and I have to basically not let water hit them in the shower and be really gently when drying off after. It has been almost a month. Is this still to be expected? Like someone else posted earlier, it isn't uncommon for them to hurt pretty bad when she first latches on, but it goes away after less than a minute. I'm having trouble figuring out what is normal, especially when I always hear breastfeeding shouldn't hurt.

I'm only just now diving into the world of pumping. I've had success in the morning after 5/6am feeding I'll pump the other side.
I've also tried pumping after her 2am feeding but that's hit or miss. I may try your idea of pumping right before I go to bed for the night.
When I say "success" I've only gotten about 1oz per boob
