My recollection from my first is that I went through a very short period of pain, then a longer period of pain only at latch and then at about a month and a half it wasn't painful at all. I think it was just my nips adjusting and his mouth getting bigger. Pain just at latch and nipples that are sensitive would not concern me.
hopefulreturn, I would pump probably after the last feed before she sleeps the longest. I think pumping between feeds might worsen the oversupply issue, so it should be done before/after a feeding. Before might also work to prevent baby from choking on forceful letdown.

zonagirl I'm going on 4 months and they are still sensitive. Shower water hurts. DH touching them hurts. Putting my bra back on after pumping hurts. Rubbing on my pj shirt with no bra hurts. But as long as there is no movement/friction, they are fine.
jgesi, you may have to take many hot showers, use a detangling comb to massage toward the nipple. are you using a shiel?, I cant believe you were told to stop, if you have mastitis that is the worst advice ever. Are you using a shield. Do you have cracked nipples? Gawd I hope you are ok! I hope DH is able to take care of you, if it is mastitis you really need to be in bed with baby.

Well, tried NIP again at Soccer. Covered her halfway after the latch and just left her face out and that seemed to work for her. Ate great, but then I think a combination of being hot, eating a little too much, and not getting all the burps out = big spit-up all over her and me and a majorly fussy baby. Ugh.
Cried most of the ride home, then ate a bottle of expressed milk and passed out happy. Why is this stuff so hard...
What are you guys doing for a gassy breasted baby? D has been grunting and uncomfortable overnight. Last night she couldn't seem to settle at all. Being more upright seems to help some so we think it's a combination of gas and some reflux.
I'm going to pick up some gripe water this morning. Any other tips?
Sorry if it's been discussed. I have had a hard time with the search function in the threads.

I was having serious pain in my left boob, so I have it the night off. HOLY ENGORGEMENT, BATMAN! At least it feels better, but ye gods, I could double for Pamela Anderson right now.

B is really gassy at night so we give gas drops at his last feeding and as needed through the night to keep him comfy. If it's really bad, bicycle legs, lots of burping, and gas drops before bed. It stinks to see them uncomfortable doesn't it!?
Laverne thanks for checking! I am doing much better. Luckily I'm not a total idiot and didn't listen to the dumbass doctor. Ugh I'm still ragey. I called my OB the next day and she called in Cephalexin and fluconazole. My ducts are finally becoming normal again. Thanks for the advice about the comb. I was wondering how to massage, so I will try that! I am currently pumping and bottle feeding because the pain was so unbearable. I could barely hold him. Still painful today, but definitely on the mend. I was considering getting shells and using a nipple shield. Does that make it more tolerable? I'm still so scared to nurse at this point.

I tried to cover up with a muslin blanket while she latches, but it was too hard. Juggling an angry baby, trying to latch while she's squirming, and trying not to flash people is just too frustrating. I do put a burp cloth over the top of my boob while she's eating just bc my boob is huge and pale lol. I have to repeat to myself constantly that feeding my child is more important than my sense of modesty or other people's sensibility. It works sometimes. So hard.
So, they say you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. I am trying to figure out if that is one of the reasons she spits up if she takes both sides (2nd side is usually not emptied) or when she eats within a certain time after her prior feeding. I haven't figured out her hungry cry vs other cries yet, but she always acts like she wants to eat. Seriously, where is the manual for BFing like there is instructions for formula?

yes on both , if you have any abrasions at all you need to keep them slathered in bacitracin or lanolin. I have alternating also ñon stick 1st aid pads have been a live saver

I have tried block feeding and haven't seen any decrease in spit up. I think it's just baby based. My first always ate both sides and never spit up but this time he spits up pretty much every feed no matter how much he ate.

I usually block feed, but once in a while she acts like she isn't satisfied so I put her on the other side (because one can only take so much screaming).

My babe will spit up while still latched. I heard and read that overfeeding isnt possible, but she clearly doesn't know when to stop herself! I try to take her off for frequent burps and then put her back on if she's rooting again. She never releases the boob on her own though so I have to do checks as she stops swallowing, falls asleep, etc. she screams at me a lot these days and only seems to want to be on my poor nipples.

MY BOOBS AREN'T BROKEN!! almost 2 weeks of EPing and only getting an ounce tops in a 30 minute pumping session. I noticed last night my nipples were rubbing the phlange tube so grabbed a larger size at bru today. I got an ounce in 5 minutes!! I didn't know milk could squirt out of the middle of my nipple as before it was just a drip out of the bottom. I never knew I could get so excited about nipple squirts! Now maybe I can get my supply up!!

Yes to the nipple shells! I wore those and then used the triple ointment my midwife prescribed but also let them get air. I liked the shells and even when I was in the hospital the pediatrician came in and noticed one on the table and said that she used them and they were great.
We have bright green stringy looking poops this evening. Google says it could be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance issue or possibly a result of me eating lactose... Or could be nothing. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it. I'm pumping and supplementing with formula (pumped 21oz today and only about 3oz of formula)... Not sure what I could do different with pumping.
When M latches the first minute is Soo painful. It goes away, but my god, it is horrible.
+1. But only on one side--and she removes the nipple from her mouth and relatches a few times during the feeding, so I get to experience that first minute several times.

YUCK.
Yes. We have that too. I'm hoping this passes soon. I feel like he clamps down on my nipples. After a bit it doesn't hurt at all. I'm not sure how to remedy this. It makes me dread nursing.

Me too. Varying the hold has helped some--football is better than cross cradle.
