So, they say you can't overfeed a breastfed baby. I am trying to figure out if that is one of the reasons she spits up if she takes both sides (2nd side is usually not emptied) or when she eats within a certain time after her prior feeding. I haven't figured out her hungry cry vs other cries yet, but she always acts like she wants to eat. Seriously, where is the manual for BFing like there is instructions for formula?
My babe will spit up while still latched. I heard and read that overfeeding isnt possible, but she clearly doesn't know when to stop herself! I try to take her off for frequent burps and then put her back on if she's rooting again. She never releases the boob on her own though so I have to do checks as she stops swallowing, falls asleep, etc. she screams at me a lot these days and only seems to want to be on my poor nipples.
Our extreme spitup was/is part of reflux though.
If like a manual too!
This sounds like us , only place she is happy is boobs. im going to call the ped but JW if your Lo is on any medicine for reflux ?
Question to all - my LO feeds so often during the day and before would wake every 2 hours at nicht , past 2 night she has slept 4 hour and 3 hour stretches , but when I wake to feed her I am sooooo engorged it is hard for her to latch on , also I am like. A faucet the milk just drips out of me so it shoots into her mouth and then she cries. Tonight I pumped before feeding her at 1am so that I was not so engorged, will my supply regulate itself ? I think maybe she is getting too much foremilk too and that is making her gassy , which makes her cry of pain it's so sad.

She's on Prilosec for reflux. I think it's made her feel a bit better.
My boob, especially righty, is a choking faucet!
I wouldn't pump much before a feed cause, from what I understand , your body will keep making more like that because it thinks it needs the milk. I hand express a bit when I wake like that. She'll often do one side at night feeds so then I pump the other for comfort when I'm not too tired. I highly recommend a manual hand pump if you don't have one. It's so easy for just taking the edge off at night! FYI, I got the medela harmony at target.com for $28...it was priced more in store but I did store pickup to get the cheaper online purchase.

Thanks ! hAs medication helped ? I always wonder how doctors diagnose babies, just based on what parents say?
I figured as much about the pumping, hopefully my body will figure itself out, I hate the engorgement. I only pumped for about 2 minutes and got 3 oz !
Yes to the nipple shells! I wore those and then used the triple ointment my midwife prescribed but also let them get air. I liked the shells and even when I was in the hospital the pediatrician came in and noticed one on the table and said that she used them and they were great.
why has LC not given you this stuff, I was given Medela at hospital and lc at ped tried to give me another set but stupid me said no thanks I have some, wish I had kept my mouth shut!
From our three day cluster feeding hell if we go two hours without nursing, even one hour in the morning, I am so engorged I can't take it. The reason I'm not asleep right now is because he slept 6 hours and I woke up in so much pain. Pumped 3 oz out of rightie in 5 minutes. Still hurts but baby took the left side and fell back asleep and I just couldn't take the pump one more second. I thought cluster feeding was supposed to regulate your supply? It apparently just made my boobs go crazy.

Cluster feeds are to increase your supply to meet their needs, since it means they're in a growth spurt.

It was the growth spurt from hell. And here I was freaking out for months about having low supply issues again for months. I think I'm good.
My LOs are 5.5 weeks now, and I finally feel that A has gotten the hang of nursing. He's been improving a little bit each week, but this week I haven't felt remotely frustrated with it. We may actually pull this off! And he's an absolute pro at side-lying nursing, so nighttime feeds are a much more restful experience than they were.
I'm now just looking forward to spontaneous letdown and slightly forceful letdown to resolve itself... which I'm hoping will happen?

Well good question, how rude! I begged for a nipple shield from LC in the hospital. Pedi just referred me to a LC that she likes. The problem is I have to jump through some hoops for insurance to cover it so I can't get in for awhile.

This is us too, during the day I feel like she feeds so much that my supply is gradually dipping to where I'm struggling to keep her latched and happy in the late afternoon/evening.
Then, halfway through the night my boobs get FULL. I fell asleep last night with a pad out of place and literally woke up in a PUDDLE. Gross. I'm not sure why my body makes so much more milk when I'm sleeping. WTF body? Why can't you spread the milks out to last 24 hours of happy baby?
I did pump for a couple minutes the last few nights just to get some of the foremilk out of the way. Then I finish pumping after she eats to empty them out completely and freeze the extra. During the day I can't stash, I need what I make.

i keep thinking at every cluster that it will make his next meal just a bit bigger as his stomach is growing. htuzzi324, i hope your boobs calm down soon, meantime hot shower will make them feel better.
how do you start a stash for when you go back to work? I feel like I produce just enough to feed DS on demand, but I'll need at least a day in advance pumped for when he goes to daycare. If I wait until I'm full I can get 2 oz total out of both breasts manual pump.
I plan on pumping after his morning feed. But I probably won't get more than a couple of ounces (if that much) so it will take a few days.
Nelson is sleepy at night and all morning and the cluster seems to hit at 3pm until 9pm. Then i better have my shit together so i can sleep. I have been trying to take him to our dark bedroom at 9ish every night, so i don't know if he is getting the idea that bedroom=deep sleep, or if he is just exhausted from the cluster.

The medicine does seem to be helping! She is eating for longer periods and spitting up less. The choking episodes are also fewer. She does still sometimes seem uncomfortable after feeds though.
We had seen the doctor twice and decided to wait it out, but when the choking became more frequent and really affected her breathing, we decided to go with medicine. An LC and a nurse practitioner watched her during a feeding and noticed all the arching and discomfort that she was having that I didn't quite pick up on. At that point she was also only eating for about 5 to 7 minutes.
If you suspect reflux, then I think it's worth conversation with your doctor on what to watch for. I never wanted to medicate her this young but she clearly needed it! And I'm so glad we caught it before she started losing weight again.

jgesi I bought the medela shells from Amazon. I think target has them too. They help wounds heal by letting you get air and kind of help with flat nipples. For like $15 I will recommend them to everyone! With my last baby sore nipples nearly killed me! I was in misery for close to two months. This time is going sooo much better.
MY BOOBS AREN'T BROKEN!! almost 2 weeks of EPing and only getting an ounce tops in a 30 minute pumping session. I noticed last night my nipples were rubbing the phlange tube so grabbed a larger size at bru today. I got an ounce in 5 minutes!! I didn't know milk could squirt out of the middle of my nipple as before it was just a drip out of the bottom. I never knew I could get so excited about nipple squirts! Now maybe I can get my supply up!!
You inspired me to buy a size up today! Way more efficient! Thank you
Yes. We have that too. I'm hoping this passes soon. I feel like he clamps down on my nipples. After a bit it doesn't hurt at all. I'm not sure how to remedy this. It makes me dread nursing.
Me too. Varying the hold has helped some--football is better than cross cradle.
Im with you ladies. Ive found that starting with a shield for a minute or so then removing it and finishing mostly eliminated this pain. But NIP with a shield and staying covered is impossible for me, milk and nips be everywhere!
I'm also joining the green poop club. I think it's a fore/hind milk imbalance, since my letdown is crazy forceful this past week since LO has been going a bit longer between feeds. I think my boobs are trying to drown her. :/ so block feeding and catching most of the letdown into a towel before re-latching her on.
How do you know? DS had a little white on his tongue, but it seemed to wipe away easily. And I occasionally get stabbing pains in my boobs, not constant though...
My nips turned rosy and painful. The white stuff on his tongue can be scraped off, but comes back before a feeding.
how do I know if I have the correct size funnel thing on my pump? What if that's my problem??
It should only suck your nipple into the funnel but none of it should touch the sides while your a pumping. If it's sucking in more, too big. If your nipple is rubbing the sides, too small. And those sentences had far to many nipples in them...
Dear baby of mine, You aren't hungry when you latch on, suck for two minutes and fall asleep, only to repeat this five minutes later. If you just took a pacifier it would save us this frustration. Also if those two bunnies you kinda took could magically reappear that would be great. Love, Nipples
I had to, sorry.
Edit: autocorrect is drunk again. Bunnies= pacifiers. I don't even know how that happened.

htuzzi324, this is what's going on at our house too. 5 minutes on a boob, 15 minutes of a nap, rinse and repeat. UGH. i hope she gets tired of this before i want to go to bed. sweet love, you were getting sprayed in the face by my letdown this morning. clearly supply is not an issue. enough with the cluster feeds.

Oh shit bibs, it sounds like you got on top of it quickly though! You don't want to wait until it gets into your ducts, and you get mastitis too. Hell. Lesson learned. I now realize looking back that I probably had thrush coming on slowly for a couple weeks. I attributed burning nipples between feeds to poor latch. Newb fail.
